Interestingly, both men and women, in ancient Egypt, wore make up.
The first evidence of makeup appeared in ancient Egypt in about 4,000 BC. Apparently Egyptian makeup served to protect against the weather and to better their looks. They used uguent to moisturize the skin and kohl to highlight their eye features. One can see from surviving paintings and busts that both men and women used makeup with special attention being paid to the eyes.

My husband always said the same as you, but I was wearing makeup when he met me and he liked the way I looked.
Of course there is always the possibility that men in general notice women who are "dolled up" but then when they marry said woman they start telling the woman they prefer them natural because they don't want other males seeing their mate still "dolled up"
yeah i'm dating a girl every now and then.
she looks like a porn star.
but i don't think she'll get me.
why?
because of the make up. i just can't stand it.
so it's not always a benefit for women. i bet many guys are crazy about her though.
