It is the first time Russia has had a seat on the 25-member board of directors of the Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication (SWIFT) since it joined in 1989. Every three years the organization reconfigures the shares among the countries participating. Each country receives a number of shares in proportion to the traffic in the system. The reallocation has led to changes in the structure of the board. “By the end of 2014 the SWIFT traffic growth in Russia allowed us to reach thirteenth place in the world, so Russia has increased its stake to a level that allows it to nominate a candidate to the Board of Directors”, the executive director of the Russian National SWIFT Association Roman Chernov told RBC.

Opinion piece on the matter, for what it's worth if interested

If Vladimir Putin is remotely capable of laughter (the jury is out on that one…) then he’s probably doing so right now. Russia is once again Arch-Enemy of the United States. It’s like living through a really bad James Bond movie, complete with cartoonish villains.

And for the last several months, the US government has been doing everything it can to torpedo the Russian economy, as well as Vladimir Putin’s standing within his own country.

The economic nuclear option is to kick Russia out of the international banking system. And the US government has been vociferously pushing for this.

Specifically, the US government wants to kick Russia out of SWIFT, short for the Society of Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunications.

Yeah, this thread is like biting into big juicy great smelling burger and finding that it's mostly fat and you wonder where the meat is. Still it tastes good enough to come back for more.

Funny the building burned for hours and it didn't fall down. The law of physics in New York must be different.

It was a bell tower being repaired, and the reports are that the tower was undamaged. There is no fire there now, the fire was put out.

It was the scaffolding around the building that was on fire. Not the building itself. The building suffered minimal damage. There was no reason for it to fall.

I was going to add that to my reply... but I don't think the bell tower was made of steel beams

(Not saying that fire is hot enough to melt steel beams, and that 9/11 makes sense)
