The other half of my objection was that I don't have any interest in identifying myself through some picture or abstract design. That sort of thing just isn't me.
If people just want to be able to recognise me, I've got that personalised mini-profile background colour which probably does the trick.

I have learned to recognise your username and background over time but it is not as easy as a good avatar.

There are a few others without that I recognise without avatars but I still say it's better with one.

Even if it's a "this is not my avatar" logo

I did that for a while when I had to use dial-up because having to load them in took too long and all I really wanted was the text at that point. But I just got a plugin for my browser that allowed me to easily turn on/off the pictures for all webpages.

Howdy!

So I'm noticing a fair amount of new users lately, & it's always been a peeve of mine when people don't have an Avatar. Our names, avatars, & signatures all say something about us & our respective alter/egos, & I always feel like everyone is missing out on a key aspect of community bonding & our interpersonal relationships when discussing/arguing with a faceless name, so to speak.

It also makes it easier to peruse threads & see who is saying what.

Any thoughts?

Why not require a number tattooed on them, too?

And do you remember that weird occasion when everybody on the site had exactly the same avatar, because one of the members had made an error when changing their own?
I still remember the image; a very odd looking lady.

I don't need your avatar to suit me; I simply enjoy what an avatar projects about a member. It gives me something to picture saying the things they say.

As to my location, If this isn't purgatory, I dont know what to call it.

I think thats a valid point, If you have an avatar why not a rough geographical location?

As a non US member I find it helps in a converation to know roughly were someone is.

I have a great idea.......Worry about yourself.

Congratulations on totally missing the point. Here's an idea...don't get so easily offended.

I read your feel good everybody gather around and give a group hug crap.........I say stick it. The people that really get under my skin are the....... you should do what I say crowd. But it is for building a better community......Ya whatever it is self righteous arrogance.

I think I have a pretty clear grasp of the point. Your arrogance makes me want to puke like your unicorn.

If I changed the thread title to something like

"Why don't you use an avatar?"

Would you all still feel so antagonized?

LoL at me being a control freak; you are all so busy getting your feelings hurt over a singular sentence's slightly controversial phrasing.

& 90% of you berating me didn't even give a reason or discuss why you don't want an avatar. You're all too busy having your rights infringed on apparently.

Did I say "LETS HAVE AN OFFICIAL POLL &/or RESPONSE FROM MODS ON HAVING FORCED AVATARS FOR MEMBERS!"

Because I swear that's what you're all reading.

It is not the title......It is the arrogant I know what is good for you feel. It reminds me of progressive liberals and how they know what is best for you.

I bet you often tell others how they should act and what is best for them.......Am I right.....Be honest.

I'm not familiar enough with your views or posting history or real life personality to "assign" you an avatar.

& if you were familiar with my posting history youd probably know I live in Calabasas, CA

Do you feel better now after my disclosure?

Many thanks! I figured a board like this would have such a thing - just been too busy shopping these great threads to go and look for it. As I said - I have learned to ignore them for the most part, but there are a couple with bright flashes that are hard on the eyes - or the concentration.

Have you noticed that everyone that is against this thread has no avatar?

I see a trend here...

Not sure weather to simply steal this for my avatar or wait a week and pretend it was my idea all along....
