I say dolphins, other then ourselves they have the largest brain size, unless im mistaken....

They also display extreme intelligence.....

I definitely say dolphins

Thanks for all the fish

I don't think the Human race will be Gone but it will replace itself either by evolution or by self adaptation,

We will evolve into the next "animal", but it will be of our own doing. Think about all the evolutionary trajectories we as humans now control or directly impact. Organismal directed evolution. It's no longer a "blind" and random process. Bio-engineering?

Meet the next generation of humans: Homo-Evolutis

Interesting stuff to think about...

I happen to agree If we don't destroy ourselves we will evolve to our own specs either with cybertech or bio tech or both.
Pity I will miss it I want to see in infrared in xrays, I want to be able to be all chrome...I wanna be a cyberpunk.

Sorry I played cyberpunk 2020 when younger.

Yeah but do they have hands?

It's hard to build an empire without hands.

That goes for all the other animals suggested here.

yes I knew that
THEN they evolved into otter like animals then seal like animals
Eventually they gave up land existence an became Dolphins Porpoises an Whales.

Theres a theory that early humans lost there bodies covered In hair because they lived on the coast .
Diveing for crustations and other sourses of food from the sea caused us to lose our bodie hair as it hampered our ability to swim an dive in the sea,

Who says you ahve to have hands? perhaps they evolve to find another way? Also isnt the rest kind of subjective? our idea of what an empire should look like and "intelligence" is completely subjective

Would have to go with cats and close or near would be dolphins/ whales. Evolving back to land animal appendages if need be-cats, racoons, etc, damn lucky they don't have thumbs already get in enough trouble with their paws.

Cats, not only genetic relation, but brain structure but also as they are a sort of medical anomaly when it comes to animals(super immune systems).

Researchers, acting as "genetic paleontologists," recently discovered that the X and Y chromosomes of cats and humans are remarkably alike, despite the fact that the two species haven't shared a common ancestor for about 90 million years—

The order of these genes on the sex chromosomes of cats more closely resembles that of humans than of any other mammal studied so far, the team reports in a recent issue of Genome Research. Genes on X chromosomes of cats and people are lined up in the same way. This long-term chromosome stability is rare, showing no evidence of evolutionary rearrangements, says O'Brien. "It's like there was some master template that maintained the order of these genes on the X chromosome from the distant ancestors of these two mammalian orders."

Also, birds, crows intelligence in particular, would be interesting.

Ultimately, "birds out-shrank and out-evolved their dinosaurian ancestors, surviving where their larger, less-evolvable relatives could not," Lee said in a statement.

They are due for a new stage.

I suspected you wouldn't understand it.

If you don't have hands which you can move freely you have no encouraging factor for the development of an intelligent being that can influence it surroundings like us humans, at least thats what the op is comparing to I thought. It is just logical evolution.

You can say a dolphin is intelligent which is true but can it do anything with its intelligence besides jump through a hoop and stuff

Probably me. After all the humans are gone, I'll still be here. I donno if I can evolve any higher though. I'm finding it a challenge

Why the preoccupation with intelligence? Why on earth would anyone want to saddle some poor critter with first world problems?

I mean why would any of you want to see those poor dolphins, whales, crows, octopi or any other critter stuck in those situations? Although I would grant some of you that cat videos and memes get close as do some types of chimp behavior.

No, I submit that the most evolved creature is already out there. Basically, Mother Nature did such a good job on it that it's been more of less done for a long, long time now.

Ladies and gentleman, I give you the shark! It's perfectly engineered. It swims. It eats. It makes baby sharks. That's all it needs. It doesn't need to worry about if it's offending that tuna it ate or that baby seal it just disemboweled because it can't!

Ash: I admire its purity. A survivor... unclouded by conscience, remorse, or delusions of morality.

All depends on the continent really...

You also need to look at what Animals are closest to extinction because of Humans...

Which would be:
African Wild Dogs (Africa)
Lions (Africa)
Tigers (India)
Jaguar (America)
Badgers or Pitbulls (UK)

If I had to choose one Animal to dominate all others in presence, population & sheer physical prowess...
It would be the Bull, El Toro...

You know the old saying "throw them to the Lions"...

Search for video footage of the Lion thrown to the Bull...
King of the Wild didn't last a minute!

I think it was a Circus act from the early 1900s.
Correction: Actually from a Movie I think, may have been choreographed, but I'm not sure how to be honest.
Quite brutal & cruel, but educational as I'd have bet on the Lion.

Edit: Didn't take the Oceans into consideration... Killer Whales for the Sea!
Edit: Vultures & Eagles for the Sky!

As the oceans become more acidic, Porpoise and Octopus will become extinct, as will all other fish and marine mammals.

Jellyfish will be the most prevalent species on the planet.

Again.
