I doubt our chemical disturbances of the animals' environments makes them act like assholes. I think it is just their nature. Did you know that ants go to war, enslave, cannibalize, and other things just like humans? Even the things that humans consider to be the most even and vile things to do, we can find examples in the animal kingdom of other animals doing the same thing. At the root of it all, we, humans, are just animals looking for a home (jk Talking Heads quote
). We are just animals, just like everything else.

Spiders or squids would be my guess.

If humans are still around then cats and dogs.

Raccoons are pretty smart, and they have opposable thumbs, which is a big help.

But in all likelihood, human beings will be replaced by intelligent machines who want a bigger slice of the available resources, at least before they all take off into space.

Humans are unique animals with a unique (and self absorbed) definition of intelligence and achievement. the next race will be entirely different, with different aims. And they will probably more successful if they don't bog themselves down with the concept of religion.....Which is purely a way for us to justify our existence and console ourselves over mortality.....not to mention kill ourselves!

Just reading thread backward you beat me to it.

Cuttlefish Octopus an squids have remarakable intelegence.
No need for opposable thumbs when you have opposable bodies.

Also eels beat us to the use of electricity by millions of years

I don't think the Human race will be Gone but it will replace itself either by evolution or by self adaptation, there will be near extinction's but so far it is the outcome of an evolutionary experiment at leat 65 million years in the making in which intelligence over brawn reached it's ultimate expression in the human species, of course if humanity leave's the earth or does succumb to some terrible pandemic disease or un-survivable climactic or ecological event then that will also effect all other species as we exist virtually everywhere.
So the species that would evolve may not yet exist but I do think intelligence is linked to tool use, the Dolphin and Whale which would also become extinct as they may very well anyway have heightened intelligence but it is not as we would understand, a large percentage of there grey matter is geared around there sonic ability's and hunting by sound, they also image there surrounding in there mind's from sound which mean's that the part's of there large brain's dedicated to abstract thought may be very small as they are geared toward analysis and imaging of what is there not what might be, however after us and the chimp they are undoubtedly the most intelligent vertebrate.
One documentary that explored the idea a while back postulated a hypothetical invertebrate evolution, a squid or octopus like creature adapting to the land and becoming arboreal evolving into a prehensile limbed equivalent of a primate that would then potentially evolve into an intelligent species, a analogue of humanity based on different physical parameter's but still tool using and intelligent.
