Putin said a while ago that Internet is basically like a CIA project.

No doubt he meant the abilities to Spy and control the internet hubs worldwide.

When North Korea was wiped from the map of the internet, made into a black hole. Looks like Putin was proved right.

USA has the power to shut down internet for pretty much any country they want. US can even shut down own internet if they wanted to.

North korea is a HUGEstep from say a developed EU nation or place like canada or even russia.

Hell I bet some 10 year olds could have brought North koreas internet down! Its not hard when there limited access in and out that country.

To cut a bigger move developed nation off would be a bigger task and could potentialy backfire badly.

I've always thought that. The US has always been in the lead, controlling everything and everyone.

ETA: For some reason, the US thinks it is in control of everyone and the master of the world.

The US created it...financed that creation...and developed it. Why shouldn't the US control it?

"The way the internet is designed is very much as a decentralised system.

"At the moment, because countries connect to each other in lots of different ways, there is no one off switch, there is no central place where you can turn it off.

"In order to be able to turn the whole thing off or really block, suppress one particular idea then the countries and governments would have to get together and agree and co-ordinate and turn it from a decentralised system to being a centralised system.

"And if that does happen it is really important that everybody fights against that sort of direction."

Because "control" stands against everything the internet NOW stands for. FREEDOM.

I don't want ANYONE in control of it.

and developed it

The US may have started that creation but the whole world has developed it to what it is today.

the US and every other country and corporation should keep its grubby tyrannical hands off it !

This wouldn't be true if the USA hadn't built the internet. We have no reason to believe otherwise. The only way the USA would lose this control is if another country built a new net based on an entirely new code that is not compatible with the current internet. It would be like Microsoft & Apple.

A Single EMP blast, strategically places would knock out the power to a really wide region. Side effect would bringing down the internet in the region along with cell towers, refridgerators, car batteries and pacemakers? Not sure on the last one.

YEah start WW3 over internet access. really really smart huh? depending on the size and altitude a EMP is not the end all be all of knocking out the US. sure you fry alot of stuff but the military are hardened against such attacks and will enact MAD. Also pre 2000 vehicles will not be effected enough to totally incapacitate people driving since they still use mechanical over computer components lik modern cars do. Also do you not think the Military has spare vehicles, and ability to reproduce stuff in a EMP? think again. Faraday caged storage facilities do exist. Ever wonder why rebar is used in construction alot? id wager almost all of it is grounded somehow to guard against such a scenario.
