Yes, church and state are so separate in fact, that the Capitol building in my state has a monument of the Ten Commandments out front that has been repeatedly deemed by the courts as "constitutionally protected due to our Nation's historical principles" despite numerous appeals over the last five or so years.

The reality of the situation, resists simplicity in the most steadfast fashion possible, and I tire of people being unable to grasp its complexities without first showing themselves up.

Air strikes cannot stop a cell based force of militants, any more than a massed infantry assault can. The governments of the west, and indeed the Arab nations, are more than aware that a massed military response of any kind to this situation will be as effective as a marshmallow, launched from a slack slingshot, at a very large tank or armoured vehicle.

What is needed here, is a totally deniable force of assassination and disruption teams, which cannot be traced to their nation of origin, cannot be identified, cannot be broken by torture, whose mission is to use guerrilla tactics to sabotage enemy supply lines, murder ISIS commanders critical to their force cohesion, and to display their bodies publicly, as a partial psyop. Also, they need to destroy their underground networks, hunting them using the very tactics which have been successful for ISIS to achieve similar ends, without any publicity, without uniforms, without embassy assistance or any form of contact with the people running the operation what so ever.

A large military force is far to visible to be any use in combating this kind of militancy, so smaller units, spread out over distance, with instructions to totally destroy as much of the enemy command chain as possible, to make life horrible for the rank and file by removing their ability to resupply, these tactics are going to be far more successful than some half baked air raids, followed by boots on the ground in great numbers, and thats anyones boots, the Americans boots, the British boots, or the Iranian or other Arab nations boots.

The reason it must be done this way, is that first, air strikes put innocent lives at risk, and given that they will, in and of themselves be totally ineffectual in terms of their inability to remove the threat entirely, down to the root, that some think them a wise choice, is frankly testament to the stupidity of some people, and little more besides. Innocent lives being lost, creates radical thought, creates extremism, creates extremists. That is what one wishes to avoid in this situation, so it is wise to only kill the people who need to die, who have been beheading, killing, raping and looting their way from nation to nation, city to city, door to door as part of ISIS.
