so i saw something that gave me the willies today.

not spooked? watch the animated version.

ok, as you can probably tell, this thread isn't going to be about aliens.

i'm not scared because i hate on fat people or anything, you can't book a judge undercover. no, what scares me is that an unprecedented amount of people in the general population are medically obese. and it happened FAST. what changed so much about the american lifestyle in those three short decades?

hold on, america, before you get pissed at me, it's not just you. canadians love us some tim hortons, and it shows.

ok, still not fazed? here's the big picture, no pun intended.

that's from 2005, so i guess the bone white areas have stayed skinny (or gotten thinner) while the red zones went up two pants sizes from 2005-2013.

what gives? is it the corn syrup?

I'm betting the areas showing the greatest weight gain are also the areas that eat the most processed foods, and likely have the largest number of fast food outlets.

There are going to be so many different opinions on why this has happened.

My personal opinion is that it is the bad advice from the food pyramid. We are eating too much grains and not enough healthy fats. We were lead to believe that fat is making us fat and that meat is causing disease. I think when it comes to food...grains (mainly wheat) is the biggest culprit to inflammation and obesity.

What good would fat people serve for food...

If anything they would want to harvest us like whales for fuel.

Simple. Overweight people usually can't run far, exert themselves, lift, etc.

So plain and simple. An overweight population is dead in the water when it comes time to rebel.

From sweating profusely after marching to city hall, to obsessing over where the next looted candy bar will come from, an overweight population is a docile, easily herded group of people.

yeah, that's true. i was a kid in the 80s and everyone i knew at a lot of fast food. but fast food restaurants were around for a while before then, right? and people were still maintaining their bmi.

you know what's freaky too? that fitness culture and diet movements really took off in that last 30 years, right? so in light of the fact that "personal trainer" has somehow become a career people can have in our culture, how the # did the obesity percentage DOUBLE? that's nuts!

High corn and sugar diets, plus teevee, video games and fluoride, estrogen (from peed out birth control pills) and other poisons in the water. Vaccines that have compromised nearly everyone's immune systems.

The half of the population that used to have muscles now don't have deep voices and more look like the StayPuft man. Even the military is starting to complain about the percentage of recruits that can't pass the basic training physicals.

Add in a crashed economy and lots of sports that burn calories like mad (skiing for instance) are not an option for a large percentage of the population.

Dumbed down and fatted up. I for one welcome our Alien Overlords. Like a golden retriever that shows the burglars where the silver is kept, I plan on making myself useful.

Also, bmi is not a great measure of health. I have been overweight all of my Life according to bmi. Doctors say im in good shape with good cholesterol, Blood pressure, Blood sugar, etc. Height to weight ratio should not be the single biggest determination of "fat, fat, fatty fat". It's lazy medicine.

Idk, they might be health fanatics, meaning they don't eat junk food at all.

no one's gonna like this, i sure didn't.

... findings suggest that middle-aged obese adults may already be experiencing differentially greater brain atrophy, and may potentially be at greater risk for future cognitive decline.

you might be wrong as the whys and the whos, but you're right about the how.

i get that. that's why i didn't bring health into it, i know there are a lot of perspectives out there on the health/obesity question, and i respect that. but it's a major change in a small amount of time, and i wonder how it happened, and what the epigenetic impact will be a few generations out.

In Canada, it seems our fatness correlates with our coldness....

Also our veggie growing zones. Less fresh garden salads from the colder areas, and the fresh food is scarcer and costs a fortune in the far northern regions.

Thank god i'm a chubby chaser , the first
world would seem lonely without that instinct.

Did the aliens ever consider their plan might backfire,
a lot of guys like a girl with a bit of meat on her bones,
we might just fight harder because we finallly
have someone that isn't out of cosmo that we're
actually attracted to.

No, the biggest lobbyists in DC, the pharmceuticals, are fattening us up in conjunction with our wonderful govt. We'll therefore purchase more drugs for diabestes, high bp, etc. The US is one-fifth of the world's population, yet purchase 50% of all prescription drugs.

I think MoonLightStar put it best. The food pyramid was bunk and taught to a generation. The four food groups and their obnoxious servings per day that preceded it wasn't any better.
And companies in order to cut costs and raise profits went to corn syrup, additives, and preservatives instead of real ingredients.
I had to teach my ex to read food labels. She has an even more advanced degree than me.
Look at all of the diabetics and pre-diabetics out there. Simple carbohydrates that the body cannot produce enough insulin for stored as fat initially uuntil your liver and pancreas say, "I'm done...go get some cow gland juice".

Well, I'm old enough to remember a few things.
You used to have to get up to change the channel.
You used to have to get up to answer the phone.

I think a lot of it is just lazyness. Technology has not been our friend in that department at all.

I guess I was lucky, heck our town didn't even have a fast food place, until after I graduated. I lived in the country too, so we were outside as kids all day every day.

On this topic, I freaked out the other day, while at restaurant near my house. They had advertisement placemats.
One of the ads was for a place, for kids to go for physical activity!!!! Not gymnastics, not dance, physical activity!!!!!

What happened to gym class? Or the great outdoors?
