There are going to be so many different opinions on why this has happened.
My personal opinion is that it is the bad advice from the food pyramid. We are eating too much grains and not enough healthy fats. We were lead to believe that fat is making us fat and that meat is causing disease. I think when it comes to food...grains (mainly wheat) is the biggest culprit to inflammation and obesity.

Simple. Overweight people usually can't run far, exert themselves, lift, etc.
So plain and simple. An overweight population is dead in the water when it comes time to rebel.
From sweating profusely after marching to city hall, to obsessing over where the next looted candy bar will come from, an overweight population is a docile, easily herded group of people.
... findings suggest that middle-aged obese adults may already be experiencing differentially greater brain atrophy, and may potentially be at greater risk for future cognitive decline.

Also, bmi is not a great measure of health. I have been overweight all of my Life according to bmi. Doctors say im in good shape with good cholesterol, Blood pressure, Blood sugar, etc. Height to weight ratio should not be the single biggest determination of "fat, fat, fatty fat". It's lazy medicine.

In Canada, it seems our fatness correlates with our coldness....
Also our veggie growing zones. Less fresh garden salads from the colder areas, and the fresh food is scarcer and costs a fortune in the far northern regions.
