This American man, with his Canadian cohort were on a simple bike ride on a path that goes from the United States and into Canada. They were snatched up and searched by Border Patrol agents simply because of their proximity to the border. Then the American was fined $5000 because he didn't ride his bicycle through a border patrol check point?

What sort of madness is this? We have an innocent Marine in a Mexican jail. 11 million plus Illegal immigrants in the country as a conservative estimate, costing America countless billions a year, and the border patrol fines an AMERICAN for going for a bike ride through the beautiful northwest country side because he didn't go through a check point?

On top of that, they simply deported the Canadian? What about the thousands of illegal immigrants who cross the border every day? How come they are not deported? Our government would rather hand out bus and plane tickets like candy and just allow them free reign throughout the country with no form of ID, no form of medical screening.

Apologies if this is in the wrong section, it's kinda hard to place this. I just wish their was some sort of hotline to Washington to report idiotic stories like this.

Illegal immigrants don't cross the border on bicycles. They would be fined too if caught.

Bit unfortunate for the bloke, but still, at least they are monitoring the borders.

Hmmm, Does this mean all illegals that are currently here illegally will eventually be paying $5,000. per person. If they are going to stay anyways, and its looking like thats the only way through amnesty. It would be a lot of money for the Government, trouble is proving they are illegal since they can use anchor babies

This is simply because the bikers in this question had no what so ever political nor demographic value.

No, they're given $5000 and free health care and we teach them how to speak Spanish better and learn how to press 2.

If it were Australia they would send the both of them to Cambodia/Sri Lanka/Papua and deny them any basic human rights.

Wow 5,000 per illegal that comes in, that's a lot of cash. But I don't see anyways for them too make them pay up if they even did fine them. I'm guessing we can add a few more fines to every illegal coming in.

Maybe we can send the bill to their country of origin if they can't pay up on their own....But no way to get the right info for that of them for that as well.

Guess it's back to just picking on citizens, since they can take our money.

Sad isn't it?

The logic of this country right now is completely backwards... An American gets fined while true illegal immigrants get free healthcare and don't have to pay taxes...

Yep makes sense... *shakes head*

So who was actually fined, the American or the Canadian, it only says 'the'?
And getting a $5000 fine for driving close to the border while being an American is a very high, especially when it was probably obvious he was there for pleasure and not to just cross the border without going to a checkpoint (where they only ask if your an American if so you can go)?!?!?
Are we missing some context here, did they anger the border police, angry police can give you the maximum fine which wouldn't surprise me is probably.. $5000. Any more info?

I am working on one of those only in America ironies this will be perfect of rit.

Only in America.... Can an American ride a bicycle across the American border and get fined $5000.00 and a Mexican can sneak across and get free health care, Tax Breaks, Welfare, and food stamps (WIC). It's a great day to be American!

When I read your post I thought it was stupid that an American and Canadian were stopped and harassed for riding a bike trail that happened to cross the border, but after reading your link the Canadian was a Lebanese national. With the trouble isis is doing in the Mideast and threating the west it is a good thing to keep an eye on the border. But just to be fair they should fine the illegal immigrants $5,000 each and drop them at the border where they came in.

What a dumbass. If he would have smiled and said "no habla engles", they would have given him a medicaid card and a how to vote democrat brochure and welcomed him to the country.

People that want a wall or fence on the border should think long and hard about this. You apparently don't have a right to cross the border unless you go threw a check point already....

You are aware of the amount of Arabs coming through the Mexican border into the US?

Qurans found abandoned near the border?

I hate to be divisive here because I see the worldwide situation is a huge show, but there is no way the gov is keeping an eye on the southern border, because people from allover are sneaking in.

And I've read the Canadian/US border is very easy to penetrate in some areas, but don't quote me on it, I don't know if it's fact or fiction.

Maybe thats the point of the exercise. This is going viral? Free advertising how much they patrol up there (or don't).

It is the American that was fined, they sent the Canadian along his way back to Canada. You read that right, an American was fined $5000 for entering the US.

The article doesn't state if he angered the officer, but regardless the officer shouldn't have that authority, though that is another debate all together.

The ONLY way I might justify giving him this fine was if he was proven to be smuggling some sort of contraband, but again on that note they have criminal laws dealing with that, so even that is a stretch, maybe if they were making an example of him. However it was not stated that he was breaking any other laws, and this story is covered on several websites, washingtontimes just looked to be the most legit and mainstream.
