But, but, but, but..........I thought it was a laughable idea that Russia was a main geopolitical threat? The President said so (didn't you get the memo, the Cold War is over) in the debate and everyone laughed at Romney for saying otherwise.

This must be Bush's fault.........

Nothing new....

A few years back Putin said he wanted to start doing this again (improving Russias military). He has also sent military units into the arctic to reactivate their old cold war bases.

As for the type of bombers - turbo props.

They can be tracked by our SOSUS nets with the vibrations it puts out.

Right now, I wouldn't worry too much about this. It seems more like a middle school provocation than a real threat. It could escalate to something more serious, but... at the moment, I'm getting a "pissing contest" feeling from all of this.

I could be completely wrong, though.

The problem with the pissing contest is that you have one guy who doesn't understand that. Obama really doesn't get it, and Putin does understand that and will take advantage as long as he can. While that in and of itself isn't the problem unless he decides to really come knocking and I don't think he's that stupid, if it creates an imbalance that can't be righted when we do finally elect a leadership that DOES understand how a pissing contest works and jumps in with both feet ... mistakes, very, very final and deadly ones could happen before everyone understands who's actually playing now.

May be.

When I read him first somewhere in 2003 or may be earlier, but still on original site where he posted.
I was thinking that his description of "time machine" kinda too simple, on the other hand psychologically he answered like the person who indeed seen it all in his own eyes.

I was baffled when he said that in 2012 something equivalent to biblical Moses event occurred and yet it wasn't the culmination of all. Moreover he said that in his time people undecided about religion. So I dismissed his reports.
Last Olympics in 2008 ? - no. Civil War in USA - no. May be only 2015 Nuclear War will come true. But even if so I will believe in "time machine" only if I will happen to use it
It is so strange concept that only first hand experience can prove it.

I know that we here on ATS have a tendency to yawn about this sort of thing, we've seen it a thousand times before.

But it's starting to seem more surreal.

Russia is beginning to appear to be a larger foe to us than I previously thought, and I'm legitimately watching them with a wary eye.

I know we say it's all talk, but sooner or later ... something is bound to give.

I, for one, would rather be prepared.

What is surreal about any of it ??

Did you think you could just walk over, take over the entire middle east, sanction ANYONE to death who does not let your corporations run wild, put defense systems ALL AROUND these guys and expect things to just be all happy forever ??

The fact that you have a "foe" as you call it, means it is true, Americans actually believe they will completely take over the world, that is just as scary as anything, since they do not even REALLY know who runs things.

And LOL stop pretending Obama is in control of anything, this is beyond stupidity.

My goodness the programming , they solve one problem, the next one comes along and they look at it with the same failed approach as always, and act surprised when things do not make any sense, yes I am looking at MANY OF YOU ATS.

This IS nothing. They used to do this and worse on a daily basis for decades.

Exactly correct. Here are a couple of photos I've collected in my ATS gallery that emphasize the point...

Anybody but Zaph recognize the ordnance being fired by the F-106?

Reaction was too fast. Although after they realized we might not be about to die they went to a higher readiness posture for a few hours, until they were sure the Soviets were going to accept their explanation and not launch.

Which is utterly irrelevant to this. This is nothing more than a continuation of Cold War days, and has been ongoing for fifty years or so.

Sure go for it..

While you are at it feel free to list the countries we invaded who were then annexed by the US through sham elections. When you are done we can compare that list to the USSR / Russia.

The news is actually not significant. It seems to be sensationalism.

These patrols are routine.

When the news says - practice firing - what does it mean? Did the plane fire practice rounds? I think the news is misleading.

This IS nothing.

Except that tensions are arguably higher than they have been in decades.

Fighters also buzzed the Canadians recently as well. I'm sure you think this is all nothing... So, let's hope you're right and enjoy oblivion while it lasts.

Certainly seems the cold war never ended. This will definitely be the topic of the day at work. This is going to be an interesting next few years that's for sure.

Super tech flex will be a must now. The last cold war we saw rocketry, satellites, stealth jets/bombers, highest flying aircraft, space missions, ICBM's.

What will we see come out of this run.

Russia spends more time pushing around its nieghbors like Georgia, Ukraine, Moldova and harassing Sweden and Finland.

Which is... strange? Different somehow? Sweden has spent almost 100 years in wars with Russia (and half the EU, I think we threw in a war with England just for fun too).

This "new Russian aggression" is just buisness as usual in Europe. Have we forgotten the last 1000 years? Did the last 20 years somehow evolve humanity to the status of peace loving Buddhas? We're still the same people. Politics is the same, goverment is the same, the insatiable greed of the ruling class is the same.

well if you keep pushing , you will get pushed back .

America you are not the world police , you are the world bully boys , and for a change you are picking on a country that can and will fight back .

If you look at a polar projection of the Earth, you will see that Russia is encircling North America. Russia has been doing this for as long as the united States has existed. They have even built colonies on the west coast of America!
