The teacher was not bad, just clearly overstepped her bounds and forced her non-religion, or worse yet, her anti-religious bigotry, on the child, in my opinion, by saying the phrase bless you is "god talk" and posting it on her wall as a "forbidden" word in her classroom.

Public schools are secular.

And the phrase is no longer religious

words change and evolve meaning as do phrases

No one in this thread has said that the phrase "bless you" has any religious connotation in todays world

Just as the word "goodbye" has no religious connotation in todays world

It was the teacher who made it an issue by demanding it be regarded as religious by posting it on her wall

It was the teacher who tried to force her non-religious bigotry on children by insisting it is still used by everyone in a religious way when she made a point of it in her class.
All of this could have been avoided if the teacher had left her anti-religous bigotry at home where it belonged and not created the issue in the first place.
She is free to be an anti-religious bigot ( or "religionist bigot") at home as far as I am concerned, but she has no right to push her bigotry on children in the classroom. Using an antiquated meaning of the phrase to make a point of her bigotry.

Yes, I know --- YOU are anti-government.

Public schools are government. They are secular as is the American government.

Public government secular school guarantees every child a basic education and prevents illiteracy.

America has many options for alternative education. You don't like public government secular school --- don't go.

Right, because she was. I was an asshole when I was her age. It's part of being that age. Do you not remember being a teenager? It's already been pointed out that this story was sensationalized nonsense. She wasn't even suspended, she walked out of the class on her own and the teacher had just asked her not to be so disruptive. This is all nonsense. If you refuse to recognize the situation for what it is, I don't know what to tell you.

Ahhhh,

but that is a racist statement and a classist statement (according to the PC crowd)

you know that poor children and their parents can't afford alternative education,
even homeschooling means the loss of parental income

So (using logic from the PC crowd) you are denying children from poor families the right to be free from anti-religious bigotry in the classroom
or the right to be free from having the values of the state forced on their children, which may not be their values

I know, I'm being absurdest. Just taking PC rhetoric to it's logical conclusion in this discussion

Yes they have. And yes it does.

We grew up in this predominately Christian nation. Just because we are assimilated into a culture where we hear common phrases does not make them non religious.

Just like I say "warsh" for wash ---- because my family is from Ohio. It's an assimilated mis-pronunciation that I grew up with.

I have intentionally made myself aware of phrases such as "bless you" --- and with intention try to remove them from my assimilated behaviors.

First of all "limited government" is not anti government. It is very hard to get that through the heads of the fascist nanny staters.

Secondly, "secular" does not mean anti-religious" it means neutrality. It is appropriate for a secular body to not endorse religion. It is not appropriate for a secular body to stamp out any and all rigorous expression by the people it allegedly serves.

Our public school system does not prevent illiteracy, otherwise we would not be at the bottom of industrialized nations for literacy at the highest cost. If they'd worry less about leftist PC crap and more about reading a writing, maybe little Johnny could make change when the computers at Mickey D's go out.

Situations like this are an embarrassment to athiests like me because we are not all a bunch of petty and hateful morons.

Well, I have no problem with your awareness.

However, that doesn't negate the fact that "bless you" is any more religious than "good bye", I suppose now that you are aware you will eliminate that phrase so as not to offend anyone.

The teacher was the instigator, and if she had been aware
and left her religionist attitudes at home where they belonged
this never would have happened

If you want to eliminate words from your vocabulary because you are afraid someone just might, on the slightest off chance, might be offended, that's fine.

But leave it at the doorstep of your home and please don't advocate for those who insist on forcing the world to walk on eggshells and live in fear someone, somewhere just might, accidentally be offended at what you say.

That is brainwashing, making words forbidden and nearly illegal so as to eliminate incorrect thinking or what the people in power think is incorrect thinking. That is facism.

I am also atheist. I am 100% in support of separation of church and state.

I remember the Christian dominance when I was in school in the 50s. If you were Jewish, don't worry, you will be participating in the Christmas pageant too.

I am part of a society ----- I am not anti-government.

Annee,
I should let you know that the Mods frequently shut down threads when people drift off topic. Every post you make must be on topic. I have seen it over and over through the years, one tiny thread drift, and poof the thread is closed or banished to never never land.

This is interesting and I am enjoying the mental sparring with some good minds, like you. So please stay on topic and know that drifting can kill a thread super, super fast.

I'm really trying to be kind here, honestly.

You know what normal, non-insane atheists say when they sneeze and somone says "bless you?"

They say "thank you" and get on with their lives without a second thought because a normal athiest can at least recognize someone's attempt at courtesy.

I know you are not anti-government. You want government to micromanage everyone's life. Even sneezes apparently.

LOL. Why then try to consciously remove "bless you" from your sneeze interactions if not for some sort of deep seated hatred? The vast majority of sane athiests don't even give it a second thought. That you even think about it indicates some pretty deep seated issues. I suggest some professional help.

Ok, you won't stop drifting off topic. So I must go. I don't want to be the last post before the Mods step in and scold us all.

The title of the thread says it all as far as the Moderators are concerned, and I don't want to be banned because of your insistence on thread drifting.

I have issues? You might try looking in the mirror.

I support 100% separation of church and state. When the religious try to control via government that affects me directly. I'm a "Live and Let Live", they're not.

As I support (believe) in positive thought and creative thought energy ---- yes I try to be conscious of which words I use to express something. It's positive, not negative.
