The teacher was not bad, just clearly overstepped her bounds and forced her non-religion, or worse yet, her anti-religious bigotry, on the child, in my opinion, by saying the phrase bless you is "god talk" and posting it on her wall as a "forbidden" word in her classroom.
Public schools are secular.

Children are not agents of the school system.

Yes, I know --- YOU are anti-government.
Public schools are government. They are secular as is the American government.
Public government secular school guarantees every child a basic education and prevents illiteracy.
America has many options for alternative education. You don't like public government secular school --- don't go.

No one in this thread has said that the phrase "bless you" has any religious connotation in todays world

Yes they have. And yes it does.
We grew up in this predominately Christian nation. Just because we are assimilated into a culture where we hear common phrases does not make them non religious.
Just like I say "warsh" for wash ---- because my family is from Ohio. It's an assimilated mis-pronunciation that I grew up with.
I have intentionally made myself aware of phrases such as "bless you" --- and with intention try to remove them from my assimilated behaviors.

Situations like this are an embarrassment to athiests like me because we are not all a bunch of petty and hateful morons.

Which is a pretty low and OCD thing to do. Live and let live. All that hate will burn you up.
Hate?
I don't even come close to you with your anti-government ideas.

I am also atheist. I am 100% in support of separation of church and state.
I remember the Christian dominance when I was in school in the 50s. If you were Jewish, don't worry, you will be participating in the Christmas pageant too.
I am part of a society ----- I am not anti-government.

LOL. Why then try to consciously remove "bless you" from your sneeze interactions if not for some sort of deep seated hatred? The vast majority of sane athiests don't even give it a second thought. That you even think about it indicates some pretty deep seated issues. I suggest some professional help.
