Bats definitely are a reservoir - it's likely in the soil, just like Mad Cow and CWD in North America - deforestation is clearly linked to Ebola outbreaks, and comes with mining (to build roads, open the earth, etc.).

In addition and perhaps more importantly, the original epicenter was in Kenema Hospital patients from Guinea and Liberia as well as Sierra Leone. [Note the "H" for hospital in the map below.] ...Kenema Hospital was the home of "Viral Hemorrhagic Fever" research run by a US team that includes the US Army, and scientists from Fort Dettrick (home of bio-defense and bio-war stuff) - until it was closed last month. Of note - the same team has been conducting related research in Nigeria.
