I love progressive logic. These people have been being "helped" for years and years. They are trying to get something for free. Why on earth should I have to pay and they should just get it for free?

It is not the city who failed it is the people failing in mass. What they should do is use that cell phone the president gave them and call in the late payments so they can use water again. People who do not want to help themselves should not get any handouts of any kind including food. They should be allowed to hit rock bottom.

Now on the other hand if these people are willing to get a hand up in instead of a hand out I say help them all we can. But we all know the cold hard truth they are not willing to work for anything. It is all about how to play the system and get free crap. This reminds me of the snap cards messing up and whole families stealing everything they could. Very little pride in this city.

They have pride, believe me. Just walk around their neighborhood and see for yourself, if you dare.

They have a thriving crack, prostitution and stolen goods industry going on, tax free. They also use food from their food cards to sell home cooked soul food on the street.

They are very industrious when it comes to criminal activities, very hard working bunch of criminals down there indeed.

I don't understand why over 110,000 people think they can just not pay their bills. If I didn't pay my utility bills, service would be cut off. That' s the way it works.

What is the U.N. supposed to do. Pay their bills for them...

We have huge segments of society that think they should get everything for free. Instead of trying to prioritize what is needed in their lives, they just expect it to all be provided to them.

I'm sorry for the people of Detroit. If I lived in that place, I'd be looking to move. I'd also be looking at my budget and figure out what I'd have to cut back on to pay my freaking utility bills.

While what you're saying (writing) makes totally sense I'd be pondering also the question of why while some of cities in the US are failing and crumbling in front of all America's eyes, US government keeps on providing billions in weaponry, military assistance and economic aid to other countries? To me this is the greatest paradox of all. Can this billions just go to help Detroit get back on its feet instead of playing the altruistic strong country in front of the world's eyes? (while, for the sake of the truth, the whole world knows by now that US has it bad and it is not the country that used to be).

It's simple really if you know they won't shut it of why even think about paying it. Happened in Benton Harbor on the other side of the state . The city fired their meter readers to save money

I get people need to pay the bills.

But shutting of 100k + home is going to create a crisis that will will affect those that DO pay there bills.

UK you normally get water shut off as a warning for a couple of days but not for long periods off time and if you fail to still pay it goes to teh courts and they extract the bill via fines and penalty.

To me that would be better. For those refusing to pay better to get the courts to pick em up by the ankle and shake them than just cut the water off and turn Detroit into some African like cesspit.

Well there are other ways.

You force them into civil court like it was a debt. Fine them. If they don't pay the fine send the bailiffs round to take there flat screen TV's and Iphones.

This was all planned. Don't think for an instant that this wasn't expected.

The government will step in, declare "water" a "right". Nanny-state mentality and entitlement mentality combined to create the perfect environment for government to step in and take care of all of us.

Sure, taxes will have to be raised to make sure that everyone has "water rights" taken care of, then you'll see electricity, gas rights. And another call to raise taxes.

Utility Justice!

Whomever posted Detroit residents were hit with $700-$1100 water bills because of "repairs" please show proof. It's not true. Some people have water bills as high as $600 because they have not been paying them and they amount owed keeps climbing. Which is normal. The water plant requires money for employees and utilities and supplies.

But good news Liberals and Progressives! You can pay their water bills for them!

Help out those poor Detroiters on their deliquent water bills

Whereas warm water, may be dependent on payments for the energy cost of warming it up. Cold water, is a human right ... as it is a necessity to live.

Bravo bjarneorn . You have gotten the issue down to the bare essentials with one swift stroke.

Yes, in a stable, working city surrounded by other stable working cities what you say would be logical.

But Detroit and it's surrounding cities were literally torn apart, forgotten about, left to rot to criminals and ignorant leaders. There is little work there, and the work that is there it's very specialized, specific, and generally people only go there to work from outside areas. The city was built on the industrial working class, when that was stripped away from the city, it started to crumble. A city that large needs jobs for the everyday Joe, it can't afford to run on like this.

Cheap labor, and the feds did this, not the people who can't pay their bills.

Liberal democrat politicians destroyed Detroit just like they destroyed Chicago and LA! American government has failed it's people. I walked into a rural little hospital in OR and plastered all over the walls were posters on diversity. People in the USA don't even know what it means to be Anerican more. I never used to but into the whole liberal agenda stuff but my eyes have been opened for sure. Republicans aren't much better but liberalism and the left are really destroying what's left of America.

Not to get in a prolonged debate with you sir, a difference of opinion is healthy.

But. Your suggestion of public taps, would surely get this "free" water from Detroit Water & Sewage. The company that has clearly decided that they aren't giving away free water by shutting it down to these needy homes. Suggesting people made a choice of cable over water is absurd in practice...

On this financial document (I can't verfiy its accuracy), Detroit Water & Sewage have huge assets and flow. The shut down is simply a profit issue over life.

Flint Mi is in much the same shape as Detroit and they buy their water from them but now Flint is even building their own water line to Lake Huron because they are tired of the garbage being delt by Detroit. So what was happening is Detroit was selling water to the suburbs to cover the locals and now the suburbs are bailing out so they need to collect from the locals.. flint was far from stupid in not letting their water treatment plant fall to the wayside..

That sounds logical - really good point.

I guess Flint is somewhat better off than Mo Town, I always thought they were in about the same shape.

I was not trying to insult you.....I was trying to speak the simple truth. You mentioned helping these poor people I take offense to that. Why you silently ask yourself..........

The progressive mindset the black culture has bought into is subjecting them to generational failure and it is epic. It started with the murder of my personal hero Mr. King and really ramped up in the 1970-1990s. The black culture bought into the lie and is reaping the poverty and apathy it will always bring. This sad mistake of a mindset is very simple to see when you look at it the "Right" way.

Many (the majority?) of people in Detroit have an entitlement complex. "I live here in Detroit, so I should get XX free!". No buddy, it's because people who think like that are one of the main reasons Detroit is the way it is now.

This isn't a sign of the U.S. crumbling, even suggesting that is obtuse and inane. This is nothing more than the entitlement complex working and the fall-out it produces.

I don't know what the situation is like on the ground in Detroit, except that there is no law enforcement and besides that most of the buildings are decaying. There are little to no jobs as well. It might be hard for someone to be able to make it out of the city. If they stayed up until now, they might even need to walk out. I'm not sure.

Unless I was able to take a trip over to Detroit to see how come people are using free water, I can't answer your question, but there could be numerous legitimate reasons. Other than that, you guys are making sense. But sometimes it takes walking in someone else's shoes to understand.

As for the U.N. coming in to help, that makes perfect sense, have you seen the pictures and looked into the situation in Detroit? I don't think the U.N. is only coming to supply water, although it does hand out bottled water, because it cares about thirsty people.

To live in the "leading" country of the world and not allow people access to water is ridiculous, to try to deny people access to water is ridiculous, even on principle. At the very least they might need some help transitioning all of those people from free water to paying.

I've seen the condition of the streets using Google Earth, for all we know, people are getting free water from run-down homes or businesses that they visit, and aren't even living in a home they own at all.

Situations can deteriorate and sometimes they need more intelligent responses to them than "Hey, that guy isn't paying his water bill, let him die, it's his own fault."

If anyone reads this, feel free to respond, because I'm not advocating giving out free water forever, I'm advocating finding root problems and fixing them, maybe helping people get on payment plans.
