Also just to add
it isnt `coloured in with a pencil`

its simply applied through filtering strips which add colour to it
with the exception of one or two things, its more or less exact, so i see no need to talk about the technicalities

Sigh..... Love it when common folk get wise on photographic technique.
It blantanly obvious that this is coloured. You are not getting a near acurate result of what it looked like but you do get an IDEA of what it looked like.

Its not exactly the first time this has been done....

Another important aspect is that colourfilm wasnt invented back then so the original film does NOT have any colour information you can magically bring out.

Why do you need to over analyse everything!

its like watching a movie, somebody saying `hey lets watch elvis he`s my favourite singer`
and some person saying `you know he`s dead`?

I mean come on, you can over analyse ANYTHING

Just enjoy the clip for what it is, and shows, REAL PEOPLE, in close clear definition, people who were born 2 centuries ago!
Over analysing it and saying `well the colour is this or that` is just silly

Just eerie but a beautiful glimpse into time past....you are so right about everyone's "awareness" of the camera of events going on around them, the conversations......all without their heads buried in a damn cell phone!
Great find...this was a nice way to start the day!!

Thanks

PS, one ironic thing, isnt it sad that a video from 114 years ago is better quality than most ufo videos in 2014

It does help with your subject is just standing there puffing on a pipe. Most UFO's I've heard of don't do that.

It's just amazing isn't it. A different time and a different way of life. We can't imagine what it would have been like to live back then, but videos like these help us SEE what it was like.

You look at all those people walking and driving about. In their own worlds, doing their own thing. Unaware of the devestation and destruction that will come in the future.

The world has indeed changed.

So many ghosts.... I got teary eyed halfway. Thanks, OP. My dad will love seeing this. That was the era of his parents.

Footage is better than modern day Bigfoot footage.

It's kind of sad thinking everyone you see in this video is probably dead. Awesome video, S&F.

theres algorithms that can take the different shades of grey and get pretty darn close approximation as to what was originally shot. spend some time tweaking the colors to get them just right and then RENDER RENDER RENDER.... this would take a while, its been very well done.

great example of life long ago. you can almost always spot very very early videos by the looks on all the peoples faces. they are all so scared and intrigued by the camera.

What's with the little car at min 2:00 or thereabouts? Seems it's a working tiny automobile- a man drives it up to park it then kids get in it.
Also, 2:30 is great, look at the kids clowning around for the reel. "Look at me!"

Those colours were added by somebody using a computer 100 years after it was filmed. They use archive details, museum exhibits, colour photos (unlikely), paintings etc to determine what colour things were.

So the colours are as much imagination as reality. You can recognise colourisation by the even tones. Especially buildings.

Thanks, a nice find. Color added makes it unreal, as nobody knows what colors were there originally, but very good nonetheless. I had to turn the piano music off, and I can never understand why youtubers have to score everything they put up. Thanks again!

According wiki the first color films around this era had the color added afterward. This appears to be that process as in some images distant objects are still in b&w.

a reply to: uninfluencedJust putting a pin in it so I can come back to it when I have more time. One small point regarding 'colourisation'...what it leaves out of the mix is that many effects and filters could be added to capturing B&W images. So the actual artistic integrity of a shot could be lost by adding colour.

While i dont really mind black and white, i also dont mind artificially colourised clips. Maybe some clothes arnt correct, but grass is green and the sky is blue so the rest doesnt really matter much to give it a more real feel over b&w.

Its the actual content that matters because watching a movie in b&w vs watching paint dry in colour.... well you know what i mean

Once I got over my annoyance that I could tell what had been colored and what hadn't, this video became very soothing.

Sorry, but this isn't HD. They just scaled the video up to 1280 × 720 pixels, and YouTube sees that as 720p HD. But it doesn't mean its HD footage. It's just larger blocks of pixels.

This is the last time i make a thread like this
instead of focusing on the point, of how real and precious life is, and how short life spans are, people just want to focus on the technical aspects, very sad

I see war, industrialization, mob mentality, and class division. I'm glad my little section of the world doesn't look like this.

Wow.. I found that to be extremely moving. What an incredible thing to be able to catch a glimpse into this little window of life as it was 100+ years ago. Thanks for that!

S&F to the OP... Great post!

It's also cool to check out the 3D film/video the Germans were doing in the 30's as well... If you get a chance, check it out!

news website about Nazi 3D video

.:EDIT:.

In case the video doesn't work...

Thanks for posting this! The remastering and color add a very believable element that makes it moving.

There were only a few moments where I did not believe the color, but honestly it paints a very accurate picture in time of a very happy and prosperous society.

Very cool indeed
