I was in the air force and worked in the missile field. I’ve never actually seen a nuclear missile go off (Thank God), but I was thoroughly trained in what it looks like, and how to try and stay alive after it happens (fat chance of that happening). To me, that cloud does not look like is was made by a nuclear blast.

There was war games being held in Japan yesterday (22) covering few islands with Japan retaking control if islands were ever seized by China. Since China claims them but Japan occupies them. I am not for sure but this is same region. I just wonder if they are using this as a cover.

This is from my cousin who speaks Japanese who watched the video:

"Looks like the US army has a base there but they aren't commenting on what this is. people that live in the area mentioned they've never seen anything similar to this coming from the base in the past."

don't know about a nuke, wouldn't there be a flash, also?

wouldn't there be tsunami warnings if it was a volcano?

Didn't North Korea recently threaten to do a new type Nuke test? Perhaps they did an underwater Nuke test near Japan?

I never thought of a volcano, but I suppose it would depend on exactly where this occurred. I don't think it would look like this from an eruption underwater, as wasn't this out at sea? IF it was a nuclear detonation it is hard to tell how big the cloud is, considering I don't know how far away it is. Probably not huge, maybe suggesting a smaller nuclear device. Anyway, IF it was a nuclear weapon, the most likely occurrence was some sort of naval accident or something. Although there are safeguards on these weapons to prevent an accidental detonation.

Perhaps China is involved, but if that were the case I would imagine Japan would be highly vocal about it. And it would be difficult for a crazy person aboard a nuclear-armed ship or submarine to launch a nuclear missile, as you just don't go and hit a button. But here is the thing...Japan does not have nuclear weapons to begin with. Or they aren't supposed to.

IF they do, they would develop them in secret, because if neighboring countries found out, it would trigger a nuclear arms race in the region. So perhaps they have just developed a missile or something, and it malfunctioned as they were sending it out aboard a sub or something. That is if it was a detonation to begin with. I don't think it would have been intentional. Unless they are trying to nuke the radiation that was already present. Wait.

I'm with others who say not a nuke.

There are numerous videos of nuclear explosions on the web. Usually the cloud from the explosion reaches a very high altitude because the ejecta from the explosion are extremely HOT. It is difficult to judge the height of the explosion in the video but because the cloud cover above it is not pierced, I would say that it is not a nuclear explosion.

Of course it could be a smaller sized "tactical" nuke, which would have a smaller cloud, but to me the cloud should still have a pronounced vertical profile more like a real mushroom than the cloud in the video.

I have no idea what if anything happened over there.

All this speculation by those who say this could not be a nuke because it doesn't look like one is a bit silly. Watch some underwater detonations and tell me what those look like. I recommend watching To Trinity and Beyond to get some insight on how nuclear denotations look.

Nukes come in all shapes and sizes.

Not nuclear, it is large but nuclear would rise into the clouds you see there. Not very good video though. Whatever it was it packed a punch. Anyone check earth quakes this area, should have shown up on them. Could it be volcanic.....

Everything seems open from this video. Does not look big enough for nuclear. If you look at the multitude of photos from nuclear tests and photos from Japan, the nuclear cloud is enormous rising high in the sky.

Not if it was detonated underwater.

I'm not going to link a video of one because I'm lazy. Youtube.

Sorry, you are right nukes come in all sizes but even small nuke would be larger than this. I am a veteran and there are many ordinance could cause this. Many, from air, navy, or army. Could be many things.

To me it sounds like China or north Korea.

I'm a veteran of the Navy.

Tell me what the smallest yield nuke you have ever heard of is.

Not to mention the seismic signature, and the radiation that would be picked up by planes flying overhead. North Korea detonated a nuclear test that fizzled and was sub critical, but it still left a very distinct, and unique signature on seismographs, some of which were a long way away.

They light this one off at about 7:30 into the clip. Deep underwater detonation. A shallower detonation can make the mushroom cloud that most associate with nukes.

And another. It does look similar to the pic the OP has up at about 1:10 and beyond.

NK has subs? Wow...
But somehow I doubt that. I bet if a NK sub would hit an US sub, that would be all over the news.

Yes NK does indeed have subs. They have also tested nukes.

Wow, the American people really do not have a clue about the rest of the world.

Our news is censored and manipulated.

Hypothetically, if this were a nuclear detonation it would be regarded as Top Secret and any news organization in the US by law would not be allowed to report it.
