I get what you're try to convey here, but make no mistake about it, O is nowhere NEAR Putin's level concerning tactics and strategy. Putin could lead his military himself, O, not in this lifetime.

Don't underestimate how classy international politics is. Putin and Obama are working together and against each-other in order to accomplish objectives. Sometimes these governments work against each-other in order to accomplish single objectives, like good cop bad cop. That's a big part of what I think is going on here. It's a big good cop bad cop situation that eastern Europe is being put through. They're working together, they don't want to compromise each-other ultimately I presume. This means for us that we as Americans are quite insulated from the conflict.
If a Republican was in charge, Putin still wouldn't give a fv@#. People seriously underestimate this guy.

Yeah, clearly Im impressed with the Presidents diplomatic prowess, perhaps someone should send him a copy.
If an Republican was in charge we would be in World War by now.
If a republican were in charge, Putin may have never attempted the takeover.

Russia plays dirty and rightfully so against a bigger stronger opponent.

I dont support military war in any way, but the US military are Giants when compared to any other country. Some posters are mixing up failures in occupying with failures in actual combat and engagement. Not only does the US have top technology when it comes to military weaponary, but they are the leader when it comes to training exercises around the world, they also engage in practice sessions with other countries due to their broad associations (like anti-terrorism training with the Israelis).
They are also allies and training partners with other nations who also are leaders in military technology, and also have a past of military invasion/imperialism (which believe it or not, counts when it comes to adding up experience to look back on).
And what are other people dont put into account - they have a large and high-tech spy network. If you think Afghanistan and Iraq was just oil and revenge, then you are wrong - the US i am sure infilitrated their gold-mine of terrorists networks that were hidden and in some cases ran those countries ( a country full of immigrants like the USA has its advantages, one being that we can hire a "die for the usa" american-born that is full-blooded muslim/arab, etc. to infiltrate and take over terrorist networks) - there is no coincidence that all these muslim countries are all of a sudden "REVOLTING" out of thin air, it started with the invasion of afghanistan and iraq, which were terrorists hot-spot centers that the USA now broke in and put under their wing.
I dont see Russia at that level at all.

Ok, I see a double standard here on ATS regarding this.
I am NOT an Obama supporter, but it seems that Obama has been getting bashed alot for being "too diplomatic" and not taking a stand, or have back bone.
So now he seems to grow a pair and struts a backbone and people bash him for that?????
Seriously, wtf ATS?
As I stated I dislike him and his policies, but geez. Almost every single post bashing him for flexing a little muscle against a foreign "steroid muscle builder"(not litterally on steroids).
As a matter of fact I think this is the first thing he has ever said that I liked.
Or maybe the non-Americans of the world are pointing out the insane hypocrisy that Comes out in the statements of the American government that are driving the world towards another senseless massacre? And for what? Who gets to make the next free trade agreement with the EU?
He was responding to a question about a Russian fighter jet buzzing a US Navy ship in the Black sea.
“We don’t need a war,” Obama said. “What we do need is a recognition that countries like Ukraine can have relationships with a whole range of their neighbors and it is not up to anybody, whether it is Russia or the United States or anybody else, to make decisions for them.”
So what, a Russian plane flying too close to an American ship is ok? It must be ok for the Russians to provoke the US but when the president answers a direct question on the matter it is driving the world into another massacre?
Did you read the article?

If the military was allowed to be in charge of the war then yes I think we would have a fighting chance.
Hearts and minds are not something you win they are something you aim at
The civilians back home leashed our soldiers in Viet Nam as well as Iraq and Afghanistan. I am not saying we should violate the Laws of Land Warfare (Geneva or Hague conventions). I mean allow the actual tacticians to decide what to take and what to hold based on strategy rather than politics.
We shouldn't have to fight with Russia. If there is a war it is not America's to fight. Russia and America along with China SHOULD be working together to bring all the smaller countries "in line" and bring about stability.
What has the current administration done to promote stability either at home or abroad though?
[/quote Sorry to burst your bubble, but the civilians back at home didn't have a leash on a damn thing. Washington and the pentagon call the shots. They didn't then and don't now, give a rat's ass about what civvies think. And don't give me that crap about those hippy protests. That meant NOTHING to your handlers.

I don't think it matters how superior our military is compared to Russia's. It's the strategy to outsmart the opponent. Putin keeps us guessing on what he's going to do next.
Good thing you're not in charge. I'm sure you'd make provisions for you and yours so you'd be safe and comfy as others around you die. You're just like the chickenhawks running things right now. Send someone else to die for you. Cowardice.

You know, If I was the one calling the shots I would not even try to invade/occupy Russia/China. I would just put our weapons to the test. I would level weak/small countries like Syria and North Korea. To get their attention, and then go after all of Russia/China's small allies and let them know that there is nowhere to run. If you go to ground then we take that ground from you.
Sure they may be able to slip a few nukes through our defensive capabilities, so what the U.S. is big enough to handle a few nukes. Meanwhile we start laying waste to all of Moscow and Beijing and all the other big cities and then demand a surrender with the notion that the weak shall perish.
Basically the U.S. has the tech to rule the world hands down, might as well get it over with that way we can have peace under the gun of course. After all, were humans, were a warrior race, why fight it lets embrace it. If we do, sure billions will die but at least we can move forward and progress through the universe after.
Just imagine how much stronger we will be when we rise from the ashes.

Here's the real level.
Guys with AKs are getting blasted by Cobras, easy hunting, right?
Just fly right on there, press a button and presto, guys with AKs are turned in to dog scraps.
Nope, a determined guy out there fighting a war for his land, even with a same old AK is still a warrior to be feared.
Here's one shooting back at a Cobra that's trying to strafe him, shoots the pilot dead.
www.youtube.com...
So what tech is thas? When in the 21st century, a guy with an AK can still flat out kill a Cobra pilot. Where is all that wonder super tech? Yeap, it's all dumped into the black hole of Pentagons wonderwaffe projects, all that cash simply stolen by MIC corporations, exactly what Dwight Eisenhower was warning America about during his last Presidential speech.
So? And I can sneak up on a guy in full armor and put a knife through the opening his neck? So what?
A guy can hide underground and get caught once his buddy steps out and uses his cellphone, an hour later a bomb hits the ground and squashes him as the earth over him kills him.
This is a different time and a different war. USA wont occupy, they will crush and dismantle power and conflict mass casualties- who is to say we would ever meet face to face? They can press a button and kill hundreds without touching the ground. They have toppled govenments both on and off camera for years doing this. And USA is not in the business of occupying, they dont do the nam "kill the ones who shoot at us until they stop, until then we wait" thing anymore - only reason we have troops holding ground in Iraq and Afghanistan is because of possibly financial gain, but more likely as stated to take out specific people for war crimes/revenge who held political power (Saddam and Osama) - without their regimes they had to occupy and plant a puppet government. Those are the "wars" on tv, but you would have to have a lot of faith in the news to believe that we havent had american soldiers involved in secret battles across the globe - the ones we dont invade in and wave our representative flags for (which is why i state the usa is more battle-hardened than most people know).
Plus, the Soviet Union fell. Its not hard to look up how Europe played some roles in the background to accelerate that process. So, in a nutshell, war doesnt have to be fought me vs you on a battlefield all the time.
Let's not forget U.S. Super-power status of the 21st Century in terms of Economic warfare capabilities.

War with Russia would be bloody, but we will win, not by our own hand, but with the aid of our allies.
The arrogance is shocking!
Why would you win?
Look at WWII The Russian army at the start of operation barbarosa was in a far worse state than it is now! Hitler was about as far ahead of Russia as the US is now and he had Romanian and Italian allies. It ended up with millions of dead Germans. And Russia didnt have the advantage of a nuclear stockpile then.
US + Allies would likley meet the same fate.
You march on Moscow you end up dead
And no one wins WW3! Dont you get it? If it goes Nuclear and it likely will the result will be American major city's being turned in smoking radioactive holes. Tens of millions of Civilians dead. Even if you take Moscow or nuke it, Russia will have its pound of flesh and more in revenge.
