Whitewashed: Two Teens Arrested In Beating of Pickup Driver

Detroit police have arrested two teenagers in connection with the brutal beating of a motorist that has sparked outrage across the nation.

The teens, ages 16 and 17, were arrested without incident early Saturday morning in the area of the beating on Detroit's eastside, according to Detroit Police spokesman Sgt. Michael Woody.

Woody said the teens, who are from Detroit, were part of the group that beat Steve Utash, 54, on Wednesday, after his pickup hit 10-year-old David Harris, and he stopped to check on the boy. Woody declined to discuss a motive for the attack.

I truly feel for the young man who ran in front of Steve Utash's pickup and was injured. However, the real tragedy is that the driver, Steve Utash, was beaten and now clings to life after he exited his vehicle to help the injured young man.

The beating makes absolutely no sense unless you explain it as a hate crime. The driver of the pickup was white and the young boy who was injured was black. The mob who beat the driver was black. No where in the MSM article from USA Today does it mention that the this was black on white violence.

The police chief declined to discuss a motive for the attack...why?

At least in the UK they have the stones to tell the real story. I personally do NOT support hate crime laws. If a crime is committed it is a crime regardless of motive, but if we are going to have these laws they must apply equally to all people.

Hate crime laws serve no purpose if they are just for 'white' people and not for all of us. Unequal application of the law only foments disharmony and promotes injustice.

The family of the young boy has shown empathy for the beaten drivers family and seem to be good people. I feel sorry for both of the victims.

I am frustrated by this whole incident. Are you?

It should be considered a hate crime, pure and simple. Hate will show itself again in the form of replies that are to come.

These young idiots should be tried to fullest extent of the law..but remember..these few do not represent the many.

I am not shocked by this because it is nothing new sadly.

If you aren't in a group of "special" people (blacks, gays, muslims, etc) Then hate does not exist in your world according to a lot of people. It doesn't matter if you feel like it does. It doesn't. Not according to the law. /sarcasm

I wouldn't be sad to see "hate crime" removed from the common vocabulary either. One assumes that there is some sort of hate (mild dislike even) if one perpetrates a crime against another person. Folks generally don't commit crimes against those they love and hold dear. Hate crime is really only used to further divide people IMO.

We are living proof of that. If we were all as one, we would not be in the shape we are today. It works and as long as it works, they will continue to divide us whenever possible.

This story is another strike against mob mentality.

If it were the boys father that attacked the driver... I could understand violence in a heat of passion. Not to characterize but I wouldn't give this mob the excuse of a crime of passion. Nobody wants to see a kid get hurt. It can get pretty heated when it happens, especially if parents are involved (think hockey parents) but these people were not responsible for that boy and had no right react that way.

As far as the black on white... it is just demographics, not hate. If i popped out of the alley outside my house and hit a boy, he is likely going to be Chinese or Indian, and I am likely going to be surrounded by angry ethnics. The attack on me will have a racial tone by but is it going to be any less angry or violent than if I was the same ethnicity as the boy I hit?

Very frustrated! Just like what was said before...if it was a mob of white guys beat a black driver, there'd be examples set and those white guys would probably never see the light of day again. They'd definitely be charged with hate crimes. This would be done because local officials don't want to do anything to upset the black populace, but when the shoe is on the other foot...it's the same result, charge them with a crime of assault and let's quickly move on, so as not to upset the black populace. One day the white populace is going to get fed up with this one-sided BS treatment. Hate crimes (as ridiculous as they are because a crime of violence against someone shouldn't be treated any differently) should be fair and go both ways. It's as simple as that.

A few of the Black communities in the US are powder kegs waiting to go off. No one wants to be the one that lit the fuse.

There are racists on both sides of the fence, but only one side has consequences for being racists. The other side gets a free pass.

This happens all over the world. The number of times I have heard the term, White Trash, is amazing and always unjustified.

I agree with everyone else, there must be one set of laws, equally applied.

The court case should be interesting as a case that could light the fuse. Community service is my guess.

I think the problem is that white people can't really speak out against black on white crime without being labeled racist. I'm pretty sure that is why we don't have the equivalent of an Al Sharpton or Jesse Jackson. While they can be called racist and race baiters it does nothing really except maybe boost their egos, If a white person is deemed racist they are ruined.

Look at Paula Dean, accused of using the N word, pretty much career ending, look at blacks using the N word, they get celebrated.

Look at the guy not too long ago that wanted to set up a whites only town, oh hell no, he is racist.

Is the Media Intentionally Fomenting Racism and Trying to Promote and Even Provoke Hate Crimes?

A few years I moved to a little hell hole on earth called Benton Harbor Michigan. My landlord was a local officer and the first thing he told me was if you hit someone keep going and call the police when you get home. Too many stories in that little town of less than 10,000 people. In the 5 years I had to drive thru every day I saw too many things that totally made me hate the town. From women offering their young girls for sex to finding out the local shuttle company is the distribuater of all the local crack. Crazy little town where the locals think Detroit is just as wonderful as Disney Land.

I posted this in a forum about Australian minority "youth" violence, thought it might fit in here. Seems this is something that is gaining steam. Makes you wonder if "youths" all over the world are copying each other.

These incidents of first world nations having roving mobs of minority youth seems to be some sort of pervasive phenomenon. We in the US have had recent spates of this, very interesting problem. We had the driver in Detroit being attacked and beaten severely and recently we had massive mob attacks happen in Louisville, KY. It seems that these groups rightfully think they can get away with it and they are. Very few arrests are made in these mob attacks. Some speculate that if 100 minority "youths" were arrested it would appear racist, and apparently appearing racist is more serious than assaulting and severely injuring people.

I could insert dozens of links and they are all nearly the same, "urban youths" attacking regular people, sex and age all inclusive, girls aren't safe, the elderly aren't safe. What is the cause of this? Australia and the US have tremendous opportunities, why are these young adults trying to destroy their own cities?

Even in Detroit, the first News reports failed to mention the racial backgrounds, which got the media in even more hot water by not identifying it as a Black Mob of 12 of so beating a man, leaving him for a sec, then going back a second time beating him senseless and near death while at the same time robbing him and his truck. Everyone one here immediately knew it was a white person beat by a black group. Unfortunately, that's business as usual in Detroit.

Race surely had everything to do with the attack. Even Black media in Detroit were saying that if it were a Black person who hit the kid, there would have never been an attack.

Is it a Hate/Race crime? Yes. He received the beating because he was White, not Black. City officials and the media attempt to downplay it, but we here in Detroit know. Just the other day, 2 guys carjacked THREE Cars in the span of about 7 hours. Article. Notice here, they never mention the race of the carjackers. Kinda odd, don't you think?

There is NO reason why something like this has to happen. I would say the same thing if the races of the parties were reversed. It's the reality of what occurs more often than not in the City of Detroit. If you are white, you are perceived by a significant part of the population as someone they can prey on. Substitute a Black person for the White person as the victim of a crime and the crime doesn't get committed. The criminal element in Detroit does stuff like this the whole time, tarnishing an already VERY corroded City.

I Pity visitors to Detroit who think everything is "normal" , it' s not, and they will find out the hard way.

If I were in an accident in Detroit, I would never stop till I got to a Police Station. It's just standard operating procedure. Too much risk to take car of an accident like you would normally do.

It most likely will not be a hate crime. It will be "troubled youth offenders" or "gang activity" or some other politically correct BS. It's pretty bad when this is the reaction almost every time. America needs to take a hard look at what is. Something's terribly wrong.

To be honest, with the severity of the crime, there is no need to add the extra charge for the hate crime. The other crimes committed should lock them up. At least that will be the Political line given for not charging them with a hate crime.

We all know Hate when we see it. When your first instinct is to attack a person rather than help the kid that got hit, what else can you call it?

I guess we should be grateful the Driver wasn't CW Carrying, Otherwise we would be talking a about a race riot started.

Just recently a black guy was charged in NYC for hate crimes. It's that dude that just walked up to people in broad daylight and laid them out. There are other instances but for the most part, even when the label 'hate crime' should've been applied it wasn't. Like at the disgrace that happened at that fair in Wisconsin last year. "Youths" were even shouting things like "get that cracker" and what not yet, all those arrested were not convicted of a 'hate crime'
