Has anyone noticed how the referendum has caused the separatists to fall apart.And how it went exactly opposite of Crimea?
Putin is desperately trying to get out of this mess i think he realizes eastern Ukraine has no intention of separating from Ukraine. This is evidence by a simple case of math supposedly 97 percent wanted to leave Ukraine our self appointed mayor immediately moved to join Russia and surprisingly Putin did nothing.But than i realized this election was different the west had unity across the board calling these votes fraudulent.But what makes this different from Crimea ? Well i think this time they didnt even have a large enough group to even pretend they had a majority and Putin knows it.

This means Putin doesnt want to send in troops never intended to invade they were there in case they could win the hearts and minds of eastern Ukraine through propaganda. It didnt work he starts withdrawing his forces even though the sepratists are pleading with Moscow to help, There help isnt going to come. Ukraine has the sepratists command and control structure bottled up in an ever smaller area. separatist forces have concentrated there people inthe cities of Slavyansk and Kramatorsk meaning being surrounded cant hire protesters or give access to Russian provocateurs to other areas.The little green men are outnumbered and are left with dealing with volunteers who are drunk.Meaning there effectiveness has been contained. All they can do is attempt to disrupt through small violent attacks.






Putin’s unwillingness to reinforce the command and control center for all of eastern Ukraine means that separatist forces cannot turn back Ukraine’s assault.

The Russians have been very clumsy indeed. I saw the marks of GRU and SVR everywhere. But it is near impossible in this portion of the world to tell who is government and who is private these days.

Here is hoping that the most moderate and acceptable candidate wins outright today.

The more I have researched the current information wars, the more I have grown circumspect of this last decade of Russian capital investment. I have been a 'consultant' to many Russian businessmen of the post Yeltsin mindset. They either leave and invest in New York basketball franchises or they stay and play. I think the big proxy in this war will prove to be not just the usual SVR and GRU assets but rather the Russian right wing. It is as if Putin unleashed all his most rabid dogs upon Ukraine (as was done in the second Chechen war). But you are absolutely right -- he is retreating now with the ill gotten gains of Crimea. And the separatists in the East will be isolated. The operation will cease except in propaganda. Because Putin will portray any successful election as his own victory, contrary to his initial efforts.

When they were loading us into the helicopter, they also took that weapon. Putin has never cared about ethnic Russians in Ukraine. It was an excuse he used to justify an invasion of Ukraine to take Crimea.

Since this mess began Putin has given excuse after excuse in terms of justification, only to give a different and contradicting justification a week later. The sad part is the bulk of Pro Russians on this site are either ignorant of the facts or they just don't care about the facts. When Putin tells media non insignia military in Crimea were Russian, they still complain about it and state its not true. They then try to justify by lying about Russian presence in Crimea being a part of the agreement. Even after being provided conditions of that agreement they still claim the Russian units were a part of the black sea fleet.

I asked this before and noticed no Pro Russians answered it.

If ethnic Russians being attacked / oppressed was the lie to go into Crimea, why stop there?

Are ethnic Russians living in Crimea more important than ethnic Russians living in the South and East Ukraine?

Based on events to date Ethnic Russians in Crimea apparently are worth more than ethnic Russians in the South and East. based on those lies by Putin I am in favor of admitting former SSR's into NATO to protect their territorial integrity from further Russian aggression. I also support Germany should they decide to reclaim Kaliningrad and force all Russians out.

No, but we all know Crimea has more of a strategic importance, with an important Navy base for the Russians. Their actions were to protect those strategic assets, with the uncertainty of events taking place in Kiev. Most western nations would do the same.

Sure its an important naval base - that belonged to Ukraine and not Russia.

I am interested in what the turnout in the East was, and who they voted for if they even got that chance.

The toughest thing now is how do they get their country back, and will Putin actually go on his word because we all know how he is with his word.

I was curious too but the separatists actually control only a small area so voting in the city was probably unlikely. But the region is a lot bigger than that. I saw one report that by 4 pm they had 37 percent of eligible voters. Where in the region next to it they registered 47 percent. Judging from the fact more voters vote in the evening im pretty confident in saying even in areas controlled by separatists over 50 percent of eligible voters will have voted.

Now does Putin pull a 180 and say the vote shouldn't be recognized because those Eastern Ukraine territories voted with the referendum to be a separate from Ukraine?

That wouldn't be beyond the realm of possibilities considering his actions up to now.

Let's just hope he is a man of his word.
