The warning for the coast has been lifted, however marine interests still remain at warning levels due to the meter high surge (remember a Tsunami can be more than one surge), aswell as localised bay/tidal amplification seeing its currently Slack-Water atm.

RT @NZStuff: Update: Emergency vehicles in Whangarei are driving around broadcasting a warning. #tsunami #updates

Just read that thread a bit and noticed, October is the tenth month not the eleventh so instead of October 7th it would be November. But it could have been July 2011as you mentioned as well.
In addition, I'm not 100% on this but wasn't new Zealand settled by Spaniards as well as others, if so, this could explain the Spanish architecture mentioned.

good spotting...i never noticed that either .
never been to new zeland or spain so wouldnt know sorry.

well according to the nz herald there will be no tsunami (thank god) but there is a marine threat and they urge people to stay out of the water due to strong unpredictable currents

LATEST NEWS: Marine surge warning

Has there been any aftershocks yet? I'm not seeing any on my android EQ app.

Hoping this is not a foreshock to a much bigger event. What's weird is that there have been a lot of 'prediction' threads, especially on GLP regarding a massive tsnumani hitting Australia.

Yep I'm seeing a 5.3 and a 5.6 showing up now.

I'll still be watching this area very closely though because if the Japan event taught us anything there was a pretty big 7 + mag quake with many aftershocks that preceded the 9.1 quake 3 days later.

Also does anybody know if this is a megathrust faultline where todays quake happened?

i hope there is no sunami as there is very little places high enough around auckland
our civil defence is still activly warning of sunami

Kia ora from a fellow kiwi
I'm in Auckland, and I can think of many, many places high enough for even a very large tsunami like Japans recent one. A city like Christchurch would be tough as it's so flat unless you're by lyttleton hills, but Auckland has a vastly varying terrain and many of the 50 or so volcanoes would provide ample high ground on both sides of the harbour. And there are the Waitakere's if it get's really, really serious. I'm on the Shore, and my house should be safe unless we get a massive tsunami in the region of 30m+, in which case I would walk a 100m up the hill on my road.

As others have posted, there is currently no tsunami threat for NZ, but we may see stronger than usual currents for the next 24 hours.

Tsunami warning for New Zealand cancelled
LATEST: Civil Defence has cancelled a tsunami warning for New Zealand which had been triggered by a powerful quake in the Pacific.

New Zealand Civil Defence said it expected a swell generated by a powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake which struck near the Kermadec Islands, to cause strong currents but not damage to the land.

Civil Defence said the advice from GNS Science was that the tsunami did not represent a threat to New Zealand.

However, scientists expected that there would be unusually strong tidal surges and currents.

Oh come now.

You mean you're NOT going to take advantage of the disaster tourism discount specials?

These are the main Spaniards in the country. They are ubiquitous in many of our montane outdoor areas and are right pricks:
www.rnzih.org.nz...

Otherwise, yes, we have had Spanish immigrants, but the main influence is British. There is 'pseudo-Spanish' architecture in places, but it isn't everywhere.

Spain, however, is an antipode to New Zealand: www.antipodemap.com...

Going to flag this one for sure. 7.8 is a big shake indeed. Hope theres not a bigger one to come. If we had a tusami here in Canterbury, we would be washed away. If the waves arrived at the high tide. It would be devastating. Our tides here in Kaiapoi are at the highst i have seen since the march high tides when the moon was at its closest. And we aint that close to a full moon yet.
www.stuff.co.nz...
This link shows our tide here in CH CH. Imagine if we had a 1 metre tusami on top of this.
