Unemployment Benefits Expire

slatest.slate.com

Millions of jobless Americans will lose their benefits on Thursday after Congress failed to extend help for the long-term unemployed on Tuesday, reports ABC. Democrats pushing for the bill argued that unemployment benefits are a better way to spur the economy than tax cuts for the rich. Republicans countered that Democrats were trying to rush the bill at the last minute. "We should have spent time working on this," said Republican Sen. Scott Brown at the Senate debate. "But we need to work on food safety?" He said, referring to time spent embroiled in the food safety bill earlier this week

So there it is.
Blocked is unemployment compensation extension for millions..now they go without a couple hundred $ a week to survive.

Republicans have said they will -not- do anything else until the tax rate is decided on...which means, they are insisting the top 2% of the countrys wealthy get a massive tax cut extended.

Because...its all about the rich.

Bipartisan committee put out a economic report on what does and does not stimulate the economy..the absolute top stimulation was unemployment compensation..the bottom, ineffectual measure is tax cuts. The discussion on the hill is to try and do the exact opposite of what this bipartisan commission has released.

Country First...
And since millions are about to be impoverished and potentially homeless...I imagine that will give plenty of people time to explore the country looking for a bridge to sleep under.

Merry Christmas

The problem with unlimited unemployment benefits is many people don't even bother looking for work anymore.

Believe me, I know several of them, and they disgust me.

this is utterly disgusting! im not american if from the uk but this is horrendous! how can they live with thierselves by cutting peoples benefits?...its not as though there are plenty of jobs to go round is there? what about families with young babies and children? how will they feed thier babies or clothe them?

its not as though they were given plenty of notice to at least try and secure some kind of income! but yea food safety more important, i dont even know what they mean by food safety?! that enough gm products are in our food? that were getting that steady dose of poison?

so its ok just let people starve to death, make them homeless, and near christmas?? uuurgh im sickened!!

More anecdotal evidence to justify taking away from those who really need it in society.

Merry Christmas, America, from your friends at the GOP.

Seriously, the deeper issue here is that high productivity has rendered most of the working class unnecessary. We as a nation face a decision: will we accept that socialism, sharing, or whatever you want to call it is needed to help the millions who built the structures through which the rich make their money, or we will de-evolve into a third world-like situation with a few being wealthy and the rest in poverty.

I agree with the disgust concerning the poeple who have abused the system with unemployment, but this is truly a terrible thing overall. Our poverty issue is getting to a very scary point. Our food pantries here are BARE and there is nothing left for people who actually need the help legitimately. The lazy have ruined it for the needy and the govt put the nail in ther coffin. In my state we give cell phones and etc to generational welfare families who keep churning out more babies, but we cant help our long time employed who are now unemployed through no fault of their own??? Am I in bizarro-world here thinking is is incredibly horrible? Economically as well as socially?

Im all for reworking our entire entitlement program BS, unemployment and social security.. but the abrupt cut like this will cause many many more problems.

oh right so is that like something they will get regularly just as they would thier benifit? or is it a one off? im sure single people could rely on family, but families that have children should still recieve thier full entitelment, milk tokens etc to make sure at least that thier babies are fed....i could guarentee u that if that happened in the uk, there would be riots....doing this such as that and leaving people with no means to feed thier families, will only result in crime, theft, burglary, muggings etc....people will do what they deem nessacary to feed themselves and thier families.

Just call the EXTENDED Unemployment Benefits TEMP WELFARE then tie the financial nots so these people can get MONEY. The rich are just plain greedy living in their great homes they cannot even clean themselves so they hire help to feel like they are less SLAVES THEN THE MAJORITY. This is sad I guess the POOR PEOPLE have to find a new way TO SURVIVE until they develope the GET IT HOW YOU LIVE mentality and begin to do what they have to do for their families. Wonders if the national crime rate in these areas is about to be effected. SMH @ MONEY........
Yea Merry Christmas to the children who are being left in the midst worried about their parents financial strains. Makes for the perfect drain for 4d beings to feed off, EVOL.

I don't give a rats behind what you believe little boy. My cousin was one, as was one of my friends dad. Took the entire allowable length of unemployment benefits and all available extensions, and then decided to look for work during the last month of unemployment availability.

Now go away child, unless you have something more to offer.

Speaking of crime rise and etc.. yep. Youre right. In the last year our crime here n my area has literally exploded. We have in this last week had numerous burglaries, home invasions, thefts, and violent crimes . Its gone totally over the top here. Our food pantries are bare, the catholic charities in the area is broke, the foreclosures are over the top. I have 4 foreclosed homes near my home. Its this bad and now this unemployment cut?? I only see some more bad bad things happening. 2 men just yesterday broke in and strangled an 81 year old woman to death to steal her stuff and a little cash!

And the prison industry rejoices as it will no doubt get several thousands of new slaves each worth $20,000+ a year of tax payer money to the pigs. This country is so #ed it's not even funny anymore. We can't help people survive but we can sure as hell take the money it would've taken to get them back on their feet and lock them away in a cage.

Israel has some nice new jets and stuff though

Betcha that would have bought a lot of cheese burgers for the Peeps
and boosted manufacturing
which is sorely lacking in the so called recovery

recover means to bury something again
like the truth.

your very right in that desperate people with starving kids will do the unthinkable, without blinking...any parent would... now the GOP has created millions of folks in that truly sad position. There should be civil unrest here, but I think to many of my Fellow Americans are just to numb from the neck up.

I just hope those GOP members lay awake nights thinking about all the kids they inadvertently toss to the streets all for the sake of better tax incentives for their constituents

That top 2% is just getting richer and richer as the middle class, and even those subsisting at poverty level fall deeper and deeper...

I wonder when the day will come when those in their McMansions will look out, see the throngs of disenfranchised wandering near the gates, and realize that a handful of rent-a-cops and a 6 foot stone wall aren't really much protection at all?

Popping open just about any history book quickly shows what happens when the "haves" become so greedy that they don't leave enough crumbs and scraps for the "have nots".

As one member above pointed out, I am sure that there is a percentage of unemployment recipients who simply sat on their duffs and didn't even bother looking for a job. One would expect this to be true for some of the people. But what that member doesn't account for are the throngs of people who have tried to find work. And not just work that is comparable to what they once did... I mean any work. When the manager of Taco Bell can pick and choose from college graduates, with advanced degrees when he's hiring for his third shift fry cook... Well something is amiss.

The Republicans (and Democrats, for that matter) would be well advised to not play partisan politics with this issue - or any regarding the economy. This nation is becoming a powder keg and, in my opinion, it will be a very ugly and disastrous thing if it blows.

So I'm starting to think you may have some issues.......

Anyhoo. From your limited perspective you have witnessed 2 people, out of many millions, who abused the system and therefore that, in your twisted mind, translates to disgust for every single person who is on unemployment benefits. That is the single most ridiculous reasoning I have ever read. What about the many millions of people who actually need it, being placed into situations in their lives through no fault of their own that require them to be on extended benefits? I see you conveniently missed that large point as it does not fit your ignorant world view.

Wow you really showed your intelligence there fella', perhaps you should focus your attention on the real "thieves" on wall street because no intelligent person here can take your views too seriously on 2 people supposedly representing millions.
