6.9 off of Japan. Fortunately, far enough away from land not to be harmful even at that magnitude. No tsunami expected.

Edited to say: look at that depth, though! 298.9 miles. Revised down to a 6.6.

Yikes - I lived in Montauk for a year a number of years ago. Really hope there isn't a sub off coast!!

and - it appears to me that CA at the moment is doing that thing it does before a larger quake (my opinion of course)

I hope the sub theory is wrong, but I can't say it didn't cross my mind when I saw the magnitude and depth.

And I agree CA is doing that many scattered little quakes all at the same time thing. Doesn't always mean anything though.

Acknowledged. Missed that one. I've been remiss in my earthquake monitoring lately. The Japan quake was pretty deep. Any thoughts as to next major quake activity? If you had to guess based on the current trends.

I have followed this thread since it was started and there was another thread today about this quake abovetopsecret.com...

One of the posters gave this link about the quake.
______beforeitsnews/story/287/315/

According to the above article, this quake happened on top of a 7,000 foot cliff beneath the water. The top of this cliff might have been cracked. If it was cracked wouldn't more quakes in this area possibly cause it to fall down that 7,000 feet and cause a tsunami off the coast of Long Island?

This is worth keeping an eye on.

Magnitude 3.9
* Tuesday, November 30, 2010 at 15:45:59 UTC

Depth 6.6 km (4.1 miles) (poorly constrained)
Region OFF THE EAST COAST OF THE UNITED STATES
Distances

Location Uncertainty horizontal +/- 26.2 km (16.3 miles); depth +/- 36.5 km (22.7 miles)

Poorly constrained depth - see uncertainty figures so it could have been 22 miles deeper or maybe even 18 miles above the surface! Could be at the bottom of the cliff - see horizontal uncertainty. (16 miles is around half way down the cliff)

No phase data given. ??? Curious, why not?

I still think it was a Chinese Sub bumped the cliff face while getting ready to test launch a missile over NY!!

I bet the 6.9 gets downgraded, Geofon's Automatic has it at just 6.3 and the phase data doesn't have enough 7's in it to make it so close to a 7. (there are just two stations showing 7.2 and 7.1 ML)
geofon.gfz-potsdam.de...
also check out LISS, looks like a mid 6 to me.

The Networks sure do struggle with these bigger quakes don't they.
USGS had some weirdo magnitude type at first. Should have screenshotted it.

The Russians have it at 6.6Ms and 6.1mb

edit on 2-12-2010 by muzzy because: Actually its near the Zeehaen Fracture Zone. Zeehaen was the name of Dutch explorer Abel Tasman's ship, he did a bit of sailing around these parts back in the 1600's. Zeehaens Bight is also the unofficial name for the big bay out West from where I live in the Lower North Island of New Zealand, covers South Taranaki Bight, Wanganui Basin, Cook Strait and Tasman Bay and Golden Bay. Just a bit of Southern Ocean Trivia for ya'all
