That is my first guess as well, except that I was going to say it was a vacuum mold of some type.

My gut tells me that this is part of a high energy physics lab. The plumbing looks like that in high vacuum / cryo applications. Perhaps it generates a beam of neutrons? Protons? Electrons? Try asking around in some of the physics forums. I'm sure someone knows exactly what this device is.

Edited to add: It may be a spallation neutron source target

ref: www.csm.ornl.gov...

Regardless, I think the answer is more down to earth. Like I said, asking around various physics forums or departments may lead to a definitive answer.

Edit to add: Forgot to mention that the spallation neutron source target is filled with mercury!!!!! Click on the picture/diagram on the page I sourced above to see details.

Edit to add (again!): I think I nailed it. Take a look at this webpage:

www.sns.gov...

Fourth picture down. Look familiar?

Proof positive as to identification of mystery photograph:

www.knoxnews.com...

I did a google image search for "spallation neutron source target" and the first photograph pointed to the above link.

Way to go back and edit your post so it looks like you were the one to discover what it was.
How unethical. If I recall correctly you thought it was some type of injection molding device. I request you apologize for your unethical behavior and change your post to reflect same.

I took time out of my day to actually research and figure out what this was. It angers me that you would, in essence, lie by pretending to be the actual discoverer. Why would you do such a dishonorable thing?

Has anyone got an active account at Project Camelot?

these findings deserve to be posted over there!
As Zorgon stated, they charge $5.00 for the "privilege" of posting

Thanks. Man he is so busted. There is no wiggling out of this one as he is clearly telling a tall tale in that thread. It is a shame when people think they are so clever that their BS will not be caught by ATSers.

Edited stupid spelling mistake;

Great work, I'm glad someone got it because it was really bugging me. Looking at the larger view picture, I wouldn't want to guess what all that cost.

And no offense to anyone but I'm sure glad it wasn't for making ice cream or something because I'm sure in the wrong business if they have the $$ for that caliber of equipment.
