I think/hope it has more to do with the last fed govt, being conservative and evangelical to some degree...people got tired of it..pushback if you will.

You can't really separate people and their beliefs. They will always go together.

However anyone who makes a major point to affiliate themselves with some Group belief system should always be suspect.

Anyone who's running for office shouldn't make a point out of selling themselves as a Christian any more than they should be doing that as an Atheist. Because that means they're already saying I'm "this thing" before I am just an open minded person.

When I hear someone say, "I'm a Republican, A Christian and an American" or something like that. To me it just means they have created 3 layers of Dogma you have to get through before you actually start speaking to the real person.

I don't care what one does in the bedroom or which magic dragon in the sky they prefer. As long as none of these personal things influence actual policy.

Harper was a supposed bible thumper, and I really didn't see a lot of that influence his mandate. Conservatism, sure, but nothing evangelical. A few MP's from bible thumping backgrounds wanted to reopen abortion and he shut that right down, correctly identifying that Canadians don't want that brought up again.

Stockwell Day had a shot at becoming PM until his hard right christian beliefs were broadcast out. That was almost twenty years ago as well. Lost big time as he came across as a preachy bible thumper.

Kathleen Wynne is a gay premier of Ontario and I don't really see her sexual identity influencing anything. Don't like her either but I don't think her policies would change if she liked dudes.

Cults do horrible things in politics. I don't blame them.

Horrible things like build Western civilization? Starting the University system? Patronizing the arts?

Sadly, people are no longer taught the real history of European civilization.
The Catholic church was responsible for most of the advances even in fields such as agriculture, international law, geometry and astronomy
Even Galileo was sponsored by the church in his work, he was even loaned a telescope by a cardinal who saw the value of his work.
Without the "cult" we would still be living in the dark ages more or less.
Or living under Islamic rule with it's historic love of individual freedom.

Eta: I'm a Protestant but won't deny credit where it is due.
Any group large enough to control countries will inevitably have it excesses and mistakes.
