I think Phillipines should arrest everyone on the island for ecological vandalism in their territory, so how big China is then.

They tried in the past when it was just fishermen, and China kept them from even getting near the area pretty easily. The Philippines Navy is pretty poorly equipped. One of their three "Frigate" class ships is a WWII Destroyer Escort they got from the US, the other two are former US Coast Guard cutters. The rest are patrol craft. The Frigates don't even have missile launchers yet, although they're trying to install them.

I feel like China is overstepping their "claimed" waters a bit too far. Hell, people in Brunei could see Chinese territory from a lighthouse, yet, it's almost 1000 kilometers from mainland China.

Also, building on "disputed territory" is an act of war. I feel that China is being anti-diplomatic and they are trying to get away with it because they pretty much control the faith of the USA as of now.

They clearly know it's wrong and they are saying : "So what? What are you going to do about it?"

Philippines and Japan hold joint exercise.

Japan sent two destroyers that were returning home from antipiracy patrols, and the Philippines used one of their Hamilton Class ships to hold a one day joint training exercise less than 200 miles from a shoal claimed by the Philippines that China has taken from them.

IMO China are being aggressive and provocative building this airbase in the Spratly Islands, a long way from the Chinese mainland and much closer to other countries like the Philippines and Malaysia.
The US navy and US air force could probably destroy the Chinese navy and air force in about a week IMO.

China building South China Sea island big enough for airstrip
Construction flies in the face of US calls for a freeze on building in the disputed Spratly Islands

Satellite images show China is building an island on a reef in the disputed Spratly Islands large enough to accommodate what could be its first offshore airstrip in the South China Sea, a leading defence publication reported on Friday.

Maybe if US just f*ked off and stayed home for once there wouldn't be constant conflict and media blitzing everywhere.

Absolutely pathetic they act as world police, but can't even stablaize their own country (I wonder why).

USA has no right to any Asian sea, or tell any other super power what they can or can't do. But again, global puppets and orchastration to keep masses in lower states of mind.

Yes, irony. But I'm sick of it.

Peace will never come trying to police the world while your own country is breaking it's own back.

Focus HOME, stop policing and warring for resources

China got a bloody nose last time it tangled with Vietnam, I think China will pick on a nation it perceives as 'weak'.

They did the exact same thing to Tibet, they just walked in and said "this is ours now".

It is kinda their MO.

They really want Taiwan back, and Vietnam is also a decent target.

In fact, I expect a Chinese play for a land grab in the near future.

That is a good point.

Which nation do you think it will be then?

Could be that it will be round 2.

To be honest, the Chinese claim to those islands is as valid as anyone else's, perhaps slightly more so considering the history of the place. But while competing claims exist and while sovereignty is in doubt, the USA has every right to allow it's airplanes and warships to snoop around. The US position is that Chinese construction work is unhelpful and that US doesn't really have a position on the sovereignty issue, that it's for all the nations to negotiate on.

I can't see a serious shooting war over this, not involving USA at least, maybe a few little non lethal spats at sea or on the ground by the local powers, but nothing major. Everyone has too much to loose.

Not surprising in the least that China wants to go to war. It was inevitable.

Why?

Sociologically speaking when there are excess males of marriageable age and a dearth of females to marry, the society normally goes to war which reduces the number of males.

I know some of you will think this is not realistic. However, when China instituted the one child policy and female infanticide became the norm, it became inevitable by the time enough males reached marriageable age. They many not be thinking about it that way on the surface, however, there is now a strong evolutionary drive in China to reduce the number of males, a subconscious collective call to war.

There is really no way to stop this. China will go to war because of the evolutionary pressure of excess males on society.

The US is the obvious country to provoke a war with, one can only hope that instead a civil war erupts which will also reduce the number of males.

That is a very good point.

They have been killing the girls enmass since the 1 child rule came about.

I hadn't even thought about that aspect, I was just looking at their actions, and the advantages to disadvantages of their actions.

They have a huge advantage not only in population, but specifically males.

Maybe they think they are ready to expand a little more.

Unless the Chinese plan on using these facilities soon, they will inevitably become some of the best artificial reef breaks in the South China Sea.

China can write a million stories and the bottom line factors will still remain. China is balancing on a razors edge and could not win or sustain a war with a 1st world country and that includes Japan.

China would internally collapse under it's own inflationary and political boundaries. The common man is getting sick of China's leadership and control. And the sketchy banking would collapse overnight given the right push.

If the US backed out, war would start in the Pacific the next day. Do you know who wants the US in the Pacific? Everybody including China. China because the other Asians states are less likely to go to crazy at starting trouble because they would lose US support and without the US half those states would go nuclear almost over night. And everybody else because other wise China would attack anybody in the disputed waters. And a huge war in the Pacific would wreck global trade and do great harm to the US along with the rest of the planet.

I actually agree with you for once Mr Spad, I never thought I would see the day.
But having lived directly in that part of the world for many, many years, I can attest to the scenario you speak of.

The increase in tensions is being caused by China and their incorrect view on what an EEZ is in addition to what is considered sovereign territory.

An EEZ does NOT create sovereign territory. It secures the resources in the zone to a nation / nations.
"Building" islands also is not considered sovereign territory either.

China is a member of the UN and signatory to treaties covering this.

china is applying its own, and completely wrong, spin in an attempt to try and claim the South China sea.

I don't want war with China, nor Russia, for that matter. However, when those 2 countries continue acting like asshats there comes a point where other nations are going to stand up to Russia and China and say no.
