Lately I have noticed a lot of members here that are skeptic of the Global warming scare. Skepticism is a very good thing, but what is it that sets off our alarm? Is it conflicting points of view? Contradictions with what we have already learned? My skeptic alarm goes off when I think "who benefits".
When it comes to reading reports on global warming you have to think, who benefits from this report? Do I benefit? Does the author benefit? Does the person or organization funding the author benefit.
Who benefits and what is the benefit we should be all asking.

In this thread I will be listing scientists and organizations who stand to benefit from polluting the planet. I will post their claims on how the Earth is fine or how we can't do anything about it. I will also list who is funding them.

The Cato Institute www.cato.org...

Claims: The Cato Institute claims that the increase in greenhouse gases was overestimated. If the world follows the Kyoto Protocol we will only be able to decrease global warming 0.07°C by 2005.

Who benefits: The Cato Institute gets it money from Exxon Mobil and others in the fossil fuel industry. The Cato Institute has a budget of about $14 million a year, derived from 15,000 contributors. At least $75,000 has been given by Exxon. Other investors include:Microsoft Corp- oration, Viacom International,Express, Chase Manhattan Bank, Chemical Bank,Citicorp/Citibank,Shell Oil Company and Tenneco Gas,Castle Rock Foundation (reformed Coors Foundation),as well as the American Petroleum Institute.

Steven Milloy www.junkscience.com...

Claims: The Kyoto Protocol will have little effect. Pretty much claims anything Harming the environment is bunk.

Who benefits
hilip Morris funded the creation of JunkScience.com. Milloy was registered as a lobbyist with the EOP Group in 1999, with the American Petroleum Institute and FMC Corp listed as clients. He is also an adjunct scholar at the Cato Institute(see above) and a commentator on Fox News.

Thanks for those who took the time to read this. There is much, much more to come in future posts.

Note: All of these links are active at the time of this posting. I have noticed that some of the related links I have posted else where on ATS are now down. If more of these sites go down I will have to speculate that someone or some group has taken them down.

You have a conservative think tank and an industry lobbyiest.

But these guys are not doing the actual climate research. Some researchers find evidence for, others find evidence against, global warming. They don't need to be shills for 'bad industry types' anymore than others need to be 'useful idiots for obessive environmentalists'.

Global Climate Coalition www.globalclimate.org...

Claims: Global warming is a plot to enslave the world under a United Nations-led "world government."

Who benefits: William O'Keefewho is the Chairman of GCC, is also executive for the American Petroleum Institute. Frank Maisanois GCC's Media Contact, he is a member of the Potomac Communications Group, Inc., whose other clients include Con Edison, the Edison Electric Institute, the Nuclear Energy Institute, the U.S. Department of Energy and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. GCC spent $13 million on its 1997 anti-Kyoto ad campaign. Other members of GCC include: Virginia Power, TECO Energy Inc., Texaco, Shell, General Motors, Ford Motor Company, ExxonMobil, Air Transport Association, American Automobile Manufacturers Association, American Highway Users Alliance, Chemical Manufacturers Association, Chevron and The Chrysler Corporation.

Yes, the thread is called "Backgrounds of Scientists and Organizations Who are Skeptic of Global Warming"

Don't worry I will get to those doing the actual research. If you know some scientists that are skeptical of global warming I will gladly look into them and post my findings. I encourage others to do the same also. I am however only going to be posting about the skeptics. If you want to post about the backgrounds of Scientists and Organizations Who are not Skeptic of Global Warming please do so.

I thought most scientist agree that Global warming is happening. Where both sides clash and fail after that is what is it cause. Natural cycle vs Man made. The truth is scientist dont know which it is both sides have evidence to support their cliams. Niether side can prove it yet.

About The Kyoto Protocol I have yet to a single scientist claim it will have more then a 10th of a degree change off projected temps in 2050. I have seen projections much lower though.

good job... go get em....

very fine work you are doing... a task that i wished i had time to do...

I was wondering if the recent reports of Government wildlfe researchers being forced to change lab results would raise anyone elses suspicions...

It is an obvious ploy of the present administration to develop enough global warming negative sound bites, so that everyone will stop pushing for a cleaner enviroment... only those that remain determined will see past the ruse...

this prevents any of the Bush cronies from having to pay waste fines, and keeps the public pressure from forcing money costing cleanups... (afterall who do we believe?)

thanks again

Yeah... from those ones with big money/oil industry financing studies.

Center for the Study of Carbon Dioxide & Global Change www.co2science.org...

Claims: Increased levels of CO2 (one of the big greenhouse gasses) will help plants. No need to reduce emissions. Coal is the best energy source we have!

Who benefits: The Center is run by the Idso family. Brothers Keith, Craig and father Sherwood. The Idso brothers have been on the payroll of Western Fuels. Since 1998 the Center has received $65,000 from ExxonMobil (anyone seeing a trend here?)

Is there information on Projected future temps drops of the Kyoto Protocol on there somewhere

I really would like to see some studies that say it will have a large decrease in Global temps in the next 50 years. Even one that said a single degree drop would be nice.

Following The Money

It's encouraging to see research along these lines being posted, and I hope to see plenty more of it.

If you want to get a real picture of how money fits into the Global Warming business, look at who's funding the "pro-Global Warming" research.

The majority of the connections behind them are hidden behind so many layers of front organizations and false institutes that it's a very time-consuming effort.

I started on such a project but gave up when it became apparent that I simply don't have the time to dedicate to it -- and writing up in a way that doesn't make peoples' eyes glaze over is a Herculean task in itself.

But as you follow the money, pro or con, involved in Global Warming, you will find that, like everything else, it's all about money and power.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

I have a great idea...

someone needs to make a statement to the big oil boys...
maybe open up a waste oil burning plant right next to their vacation house... yum yumm good and good for you to...

these guys sit in there high towers so far away from the disasters that they are causing, that they need to be smacked upside the head with some reality...

show them a nice picture of the las vegas skyline on a hot august day during 5:00 traffic... (you can't even see the casinos from the highway)

or show them a denver sunset, with its huge haze of smog that makes the whole city look like a duststorm...

or any day of the week in Las Angeles or Phoenix.

or how about all the pretty rivers of Oklahoma that used to be clear or muddy, but now run solid green now from the excellerated growth of algi in the water due to fertilizer runoff.

these are all the changes that i have seen, not in my lifetime, BUT IN THE LAST 1-5 years...

I shouldn't be able to see changes that we have made to the environment, since "there isn't any damage" so then why are things changing so rapidly that they are apparent? because the cumilative effects have overblown our environmental tolerance...
the world can take a hit or 2, but not a thousand...

think of it like this...
human gets sick... then gets well...

but if that human gets cancer, flu, blood poisoning, VD, food poisoning, a skull fracture, and anthrax.... that human aint gonna make it... (unless he is Mr Burns from the simpsons)

that is what we are doing... some things actually moderated the effects of others, while some multiplied them...
at this pace, the world will not support our childrens children...
and not just from global warming... but from the pollution that causes it...

I forget where I heard this but every question has the same answer. Money. I will be posting loads more on the skeptics who stand to benefit from global warming.

Yes, the more things change the more they stay the same.

as far as weather the global warming is a "natural event" or manmade.....maybe it's a combination of both.....
I mean, if a city is finding itself being flooded, how much sense does it make to open the damn and let more water rush in?

regardless of what is causing glabal warming, there has also been study after study about the effects the pollution is having on us, and our kids. That alone should be enough to merit tighter regulations, instead they seem to be lightening them up.....and oh, ya, assuring the companies that they won't be liable for the damage they've caused to our health and well being.

Oregon Institute of Science and Medicine www.oism.org...

Claims: The OISM is famous for its circulation of the Petition Project of which has more than 17,100 signatures.

Who benefits: OISM's funds are unknown. That being said the following will only allow you to speculate on who benefits.

"The mailing is clearly designed to be deceptive by giving people the impression that the article, which is full of half-truths, is a reprint and has passed peer review," complained Raymond Pierrehumbert, an atmospheric chemist at the University of Chicago. NAS foreign secretary F. Sherwood Rowland, an atmospheric chemist,
Looking up the names signed on the petition shows that many of the scientists are not even close to being in the field of atmospheric chemistry. Not only that but you can find some funny names like Perry Mason, Michael J. Fox, John C. Grisham, Geri Halliwel (ginger spice),Drs. Frank Burns, Honeycutt, and Pierce from M*A*S*H*.
OISM is headed by Arthur Robinson. Robinson has been behind many controversial theory and projects including that vitamin C might actually be harmful. From that he was accused of miss managing the Pauling Institute and was forced to resign. He sued the Pauling Institute and received an out-of-court settlement of $575,000. Following that he created the OISM. Robinson has collaborated with Gary North. North is the man that originally predicted that the Y2K bug would shut down the world. After Robinson's wife died he took over the home-schooling of their six children. He assembled a set of 22 CD-ROMs containing public-domain versions of various books including the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica. He is selling these kits for $200.

Dr. Patrick J. Michaels www.cato.org...

I have covered the CATO Institute above so I will try not to repeat to much here. I wanted to bring up Michaels because I do see his name a lot. He has written 2 books and has made several TV appearances. Michaels publishes the World Climate Review.

Claims: Global warming has no effect on natural disasters. Carbon dioxide is not a pollutant. Kyoto is an EU conspiracy to hurt smaller countries.

Who benefits: The Western Fuels Association funds the publication of the World Climate Review. So does The German Coal Mining Association, Edison Electric Institute and Cyprus Minerals. Both his books were published by the Cato Institute.

DAMN, i got to research that we need more Co2 indeed, maybe somebody will buy my report and I can pay that long holiday on the virgin islands while they are still not flooded

Lets see, I will "proof" that we need the global warming to counter the nuclear winter caused by the explosion of the Yellowstone supercaldera.

Like somebody said before me follow the money trail, funny that the FDA in the US for 30 years was one of the best agencies to work for the well being of the American people but then in 92 it started to get divided between the tow groups the ones that still followed the old rules and the ones that worked and accepted "private funding" to do the research.

Again follow the money trail, onces the government cut funding to some of this agencies they "private sector" will take over to ensure that things goes their way.

This years results on our drinking water will make many to completely depend on bottle water for now on.

The present administration has cut almost 6 million dollars from last year and this year on monies to take care of the keeping our reservoirs of fresh water.

A democratic government's function is to protect people, it's citizens, and the citizens of the world.

In capitalist countries it is the Government's job to keep commercialism in check and protect people from the inequality, oppression and money-orientated practices of big business.

I posted this in another thread so i will share it here as well...

just yesterday i saw a news report that stated that a river very near me is contaminated with synthetic hormones... (a derived compound resulting from degredation of certain prevalent toxins in our environment)
it is causeing the male bottom feeder fish to have eggs in there testes instead of sperm... WTF? It is also causing many other problems with other species...

chemical pollution is a more immediate problem than global warming and is indirectly helping cause it.

It is intersting that one of my Bu#e friends used the "hoax of global warming" arguement to prove his point that environmental damage is nothing to worry about...
I said, if you feel that way, I have some land to sell you... right on top of a landfill...

whether global warming is or isn't occuring or is or isn't natural, is only indirectly connected with THE VERY REAL DAMAGE that is happening in our environment right now...

great thread, keep up the good work...

Alan Caruba of The National Anxiety Center, Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise, and American Policy Center
www.caruba.com www.anxietycenter.com www.cdfe.org www.americanpolicy.org

Claims:"The one thing that the claim of global warming has achieved is the debasement and perversion of science. This corruption has been foisted on the world by environmentalists who hate science that does not conform to their political and social agendas. They use the face of science to advance their ceaseless attacks on industrialization and modern technology." Caruba also claims that The UN's Global Warming Panel are the the biggest liars on Earth.

Who benefits: Center for the Defense of Free Enterprise has received $40,000 from ExxonMobil since 1998. Caruba's 2003 book Other funders include The Coors Foundation, Georgia Pacific, Louisiana-Pacific, MacMillan Bloedel, Pacific Lumber, DuPont, Agricultural Products Division, Boise Cascade, Seneca Sawmills, Sun Studs, Burkland Lumber and, F.M. Kirby Foundation. "Warning Signs" was published by Merril Press, a small company run by CDFE president, Alan Gottlieb.

Some quotes that are interesting:
"Facts don't really matter. In politics, perception is reality." -- Ron Arnold Executive Vice President of CDFE.
"We want to destroy environmentalists by taking away their money and their members." --Ron Arnold
