Since we’re on the subject, the most offense part of your argument is when people compare the horrible treatment of blacks in US one hundred and fifty years ago to the gay rights struggle today; how absolutely insulting to the memory of those who suffered under slavery.

The term 'redneck' comes from early 20th century industry in which a red bandana was worn by workers that supported a particular union.
The term redneck was often used to speak of white slaves and indentured servants, especially Scotts-Irish political enemies that were sent to the Americas in order to be free of them.
Redneck came about as a term along side redlegs, redshanks, and similar red statements due to how badly blistered a pale skinned Caucasian indentured servant would be after working like a dog in the sun all day every day. The difference is that not all of these people were criminals forced into servitude, or political enemies. Some of them, many in fact, were very poor people who sold themselves for a period of 4-7 years in order to start a new life in a new place.
The term 'cracker' refers to poor white Americans who had to 'crack' corn as their only food.
