I hope the picture shows up or I'm gonna have to find the "how to upload pics thread again. Just thought it was pretty cool

An Ice Wave from the floor of Lake Huron near Mackinaw Island

Amazing pictures up around Mackinac Island!!!
Michigan has had the coldest winter in decades.
Water expands to freeze, and at Mackinaw City the water in Lake Huron
below the surface ice was supercooled. It expanded to breakthrough the
surface ice and froze into this incredible wave.

This wave phenomena occurs in Antarctica, but in Michigan? Yes, it's
been quite a winter!

No i did'nt take the pic, was posted on my FB along with the description of what it is

That really is a cool picture, and I don't want to rain on the parade, but this is a picture taken at the Antarctic base of Dumont D'Urville by Tony Travouillon in 2002. Here's the site where a lot of these pictures are:

Additionally, the snopes article on those pictures:

Sorry...and again, I'm not trying to be a d-bag - I've just receives e-mails similar to this so many times now. They're still really cool pictures though!

You mean this is real? I was just going to post that it's probably CGI or shopped. How can a wave freeze in mid-air? Nah, this isn't real (is it?), nah can't be (huh?). ? .

The land scape looks like frozen tundra of that of Alaska and Northwest territories far far north .

Or I guess in this case the far far south lol

Looking at tallcool1 linked pictures, this isn't a frozen wave. It 's a block of ice covered with small channels that filled with loose snow.

It gives a convincing illusion tho...

Nice pics still.

Very nice pictures. However, it may look like a frozen wave, but if you look closely it is a massive block of ice with vertical splits filled with white ice/snow which makes it look like the over-topping of a wave.

Regards

Awesome find though, you could build an entire apartment block inside that ice.

I know the waters in Huron are really cold even in the summer, actually too cold to jump into!! Believe me I've tried and my toes turned blue.
I wonder though if this is how glaciers are formed?

yup. snap freezing. it's a real thing alright.
Ever see those Mammoths snap frozen half-way threw chewing a cud? snap frozen in an instant not even a sign of panic.
