In a hypothetical war with Iran the steps might be the following,
- Forment internal opposition fixing as many military forces as possible on garrison duty.
- Threaten border areas with minor infiltrations and/or base troops in an obviously threatening manner in an effort to cause the Iranians to forward
base their combat troops near border in response.
- Use Naval and Airforces to provoke Iran into using air defence and naval force sensor capability in such a way to give location and capability.
- Once Iranian military is in the required posture ensuring attack optimisation commence heavy air operations against those forces.
Airpower is the key because air interdiction of transportation both in preventing troop movement and resupply is paramount in winning against a force
with a numerical troop advantage on home ground.
Those that claim a invasion of Iran is impossible are fighting in the past where troop numerical numbers really did matter, much like certain TV
generals (retired). 21st century warfare which the US seems to have an advantage with depends not so much on troop numbers as the firepower available
to fewer troops on a given target or goal.
Winning the war is not something I question knowing what our capabilities are - no the question always remains winning the aftermath of the war much
like what is now going on in Iraq.
We (US) are quite capable of winning the war but need improvement in fighting insurgencies that are a natural result of these wars.
In the main I do not see an invasion - rather an increase in support of internal opposition in an effort to overthrow the mullacracy is much more
plausible. War will come when we cannot see the destruction of Irans nuclear weapon program by regime change.
In the full invasion scenario we would entice the large Iranian forces out of the mountains by threatening border areas to their sure destruction as
fighting forces, those held in reserve would suffer the same fate simply because if they are not at the front initially they will never arrive with
air interdiction, nor will they get re-supplied.
