Okay... I just got done reading like 90 replies to the 'Hidden coffee cup on mars!' thread, and my eyes hurt...

Do you know why?

It's because like 50 people posted the exact same thing - 'I can't see the object' or 'what part of the picture?'.

Please... Please for the sake of my sanity, and the well-being of my eyes, PLEASE stop. All it takes is for One person to say 'I can't find it' to get the point across to the OP. I would venture to say that 90% of the remaining comments are duplicates, and solely there to bolster everyone's ATS profiles.

"I don't see it so I'm gonna comment that I don't see it... even though 30 people already have commented that they don't see it..."

Doing this leads to -Pages- of duplicate comments with no valid information; and TBTH it's rather annoying. I could right this very moment, even after reading through everyone's comments, comment that I couldn't find it either, or that the item in question doesn't look like a cup... but what would be the point? That message has already been portrayed by ALL OF YOU. Either the thread gets extended with 'object highlighting', or it dies, plain and simple. Keeping a thread alive and shooting it to the top of the popularity chain by dropping 50 'I can't find it' comments and flags on 'I cant find it' comments - Even when there isn't anything to find - perpetuates the ability for ignorance to remain undaunted, because we are so consumed with the coffee cup.

The front page is flooded with this sort of thing, and I've been staring at the same topics for a week - because everyone is ramping up their scores on 'hot topics'. I come here for the news folks; not for back and forth bickering, and not to read that half of the site couldn't find the coffee cup - figuratively of course. We should All aim to improve the quality of our replies to contain Actual Relevant content - rather than meaningless dribble.

Thanks for reading.

Rant? Check.

ah yes the "me too" brigade, or those who think their response is so unique they must quickly reply before reading if the 2nd post in the op said the same thing they would.

I think at times we all have been guilty of missing a post that said a similar thing, Ive notice some make a habit of it though.

What is everybody looking for?

Sorry. Had to do it. I agree totally, but it will never change that I have seen. EVERY single topic is riddled with blah, blah.. same ol' comment.. blah.

Or we could just stop posting crap rocks on Mars threads...
That would be a huge improvement to the site.

See - now This I have no issue with - you contributed back to the conversation with what you assessed as the likely candidate - versus just saying 'Nope not there' like the 40 people before you. to that.

Sounds to me like you need an actual "News" site, and not a Forum...

But I digress, The reason you saw so many "I don't see it" posts is because the author didn't provide a simple screenshot of the stupid "coffee cup".

If this person had been standing in a group of people and held up a large photo claiming to see a coffee cup in it (like the thread in question), would everyone stand silently, waiting for one person to speak for them all, if they did not see what the object was that he/she was talking about? Or would a chorus of "I don't see it", "Where did you say it was?" rain down on that person until they used their finger and indicated the object for them?

If anything, annoying as i may be to you and your eyes, that is part of how conversations work.

Instead of you telling people how, or how not, to post in a forum, maybe you shouldn't frequent those threads in which someone proclaims seeing something in a photo since it annoys you to such a degree.

Of all things on this site, and this world, to rant about, you chose this?

Nitpick much?

I saw Eyeball abuse in the title and I automatically thought this was a thread about Oprah wearing yoga pants.

Will your eyes be abused if this thread gets a bunch of "I agree" posts?

To reply to your statements in the order they were presented...

Name for me an 'actual' news site that is half as credible as ATS, and I might find myself frequenting it more than ATS.

I understand Why this sort of thing happens - Similarly, I understand Why, in some respect, this sort of thing is a benefit to the community.

If someone had stood in a large crowd of people and held up a picture claiming that they saw a coffee cup; I would anticipate that maybe a couple of people take a look and say I don't see it - at which point it would be prudent of the picture-holder to point to the object. Continuing to pass the photo around to said group so that everyone could tell him they can't see it; would be a waste of his time and energy - and by the time someone sees what he sees, half of the crowd will have walked away because 'Well if all of these other people can't see it why am I waiting around?'. This sentiment is what is generated in me when this sort of thread rolls on with repeat comments. I lose interest, because there are no facts being presented.

It's the responsibility of the community to allow 'conversation' to commence. The way conversation works, is by allowing the other party to speak. When someone makes a statement, and there is clear disagreement from a dozen people; it's unnecessary, overbearing, and rude, to continue to pelt that person with notions of failure - consider you're at work -

You: 'Hey I've just finished this project!'
Boss: 'You messed up the project!'
Other Boss: 'You messed up the project!'
Team mate: 'You messed up the project!'
Team lead: 'You messed up the project!'

All the while - 'You' could have pointed out that you in fact Didn't mess up the project, and that they're jumping to conclusions - but you were so busy being interrupted by their ignorance, that you couldn't get the words out before you look like the bad guy.

Instead of telling people to stop trying to find valid information on possibly the largest collection on the internet, maybe you should stop congesting said collection with irrelevant comments.

Of all the things in this world and site to rant about - this one was relevant to me at the time; and that's all that matters. It's called a rant, and it's an open forum, for a reason.

Judge much?
