I like Nye. I find him compelling, funny, and easy to understand. Why would it matter if he got a degree in the 70s? LOL Was that a bad decade for academics?

Remember that this debate was more about the young earth creationists vs science. Nye destroyed the young earth creation theory in this debate with simple little statements and questions that Ham just did not and could not answer. Why is there a 9000 year old tree in Europe if the earth is only 6000 yrs old? Why aren't there grand canyons on every continent? How do you explain light years and the distances of the stars from earth? How do you explain kangaroos in Austrailia? How did they get there from the middle east and why are there no kangaroos anywhere else? Makes you think, eh? Isn't that the whole point of science...um...to think!

I'm afraid to watch this video cus I'll rip Bill Nye to shreds. Bill has a habit of sticking to religious dogma of "science' (A cult to many scientists believe in) and he forgets to be an open and objective scientist. That makes him a no good scientist who should not be allowed to work in the profession.

I suppose this Ken Ham fellow will plead from the side of the religious conservative fundamentalist. I cannot understand why Bill would allow this debate unless he has an axe to grind with the "Church".

Evolution can be proven in as much as we can actually observe animals evolving in real time. Both parties should agree on this. The question of whether MAN evolved from other species can only always be just a Theory that cannot be, never will be provable ( or disproven) until science starts to seriously apply scientific experiment to religious phenomena - which no mainstream scientist is doing. Likewise both should Know this and accept it.

Bill should be so smart but as a real scientists he looks like the laughing stock of the scientific community because Clearly he's not using the Brain God gave him LOL.

I'll try and get through the video and report back.

Bill isn't an actual scientist, and neither is Ken ham...

Perhaps you should watch the so called "debate" before commenting...

Bill admits we don't know some things, where as Ken says... Well there is a book that explains all of this stuff...

You'll likely agree with Bill on most of the things he said... and laugh at Ken hams lack of logic or evidence

Ok im done . Just like life being destroyed 5 times on the earth

You cant argue with stupid

Ignorance is bliss

Enjoy your happiness

Perhaps you were done before you even started, thanks to ignorance you are showing on this thread.

Multiple times you mention life being destroyed on earth 5 times, I assume you are talking about mass extinctions and you don't agree with scientific findings and/or this has to do with my posts in other topic.

As for stupid argument, that is not ignorance, but arrogance you are showing here... Happiness is over-rated.

There is also no evidence for the megaverse or anthropic principles

Whats your point?

What makes you think there' no evidence for the megaverse?

The predictions made in M-Theory fit in with the observations of cold spots found in cosmic background radiation maps gathered by Planck telescope. These cold spots can't be explained any other way with our current understanding of Physics so they're viewed as the first hard evidence of other Universes.

The finding, based on data gathered by the European Space Agency’s Planck spacecraft, implies that our universe could be just one of billions — perhaps an infinite number. Such theories have been discussed by cosmologists for decades — but until now they have lacked any evidence. A few weeks ago, however, scientists published a spectacular new map of the cosmic microwave background — the “radiation” left behind after the Big Bang that created the universe 13.8bn years ago. The map, based on Planck data, showed anomalies in the background radiation that, some cosmologists say, could only have been caused by the gravitational pull of other universes outside our own.

Until m or string comes up with a verifiable prediction

Which doesnt look like it will be soon

It is philosophy

Not science

And therefore no different than any random creator

M and string are just beautiful numbers until then

How do you know?

How do you know that when life appeared it wasn't wiped out numerous times before re-emerging?

Besides it's pretty cllear that SF was referring to extinction level events that wiped out 99% of life on earth...

Read the link, the predictions have been made and are currently verified. I agree that this isn't proof (and that they're very beautiful theories) but this is hard scientific evidence so carries far more weight than a random creator.

Also as SuperFrog says there's loads of evidence of mass extinction events - sorry if this seems like a personal attack, I'm just generally confused/intrigued how someone can claim these things never happened. I cannot fathom how you came to these conclusion as they contradicts all scientific evidence.

to "debate" against a religious belief is not possible. the belief side never has to prove anything, while the opposite side has to prove that the belief is wrong.

It would seem you don't have even the faintest idea what the debate was about. If a religious person wishes to make claims about the universe (such as Ken Ham stating that evolution is wrong) then the burden is on the person making such claims to prove them.

Fossil record ring a bell?

I know about mass extinction

But the fossils start almost as near to the earths creation as you can get

Are we really debating this?

Me thinks it time for a new thread.

Also in the same post as he claims life was destroyed ( see synonyms for destroyed) not once but five times

Meaning abiogenisis would have happened 6 times.

And he also thinks that the 20 or so constants only apply to our galaxy I assume since he uses the trem fine tuned galaxy and not universe

As for the link above about the wmap im lookng into it will reply again tomorrow

Earliest single cell organism start about 1 billion year from earth creation...

Your 'almost as near' has different meaning if you consider what time frame we are talking here...

Mass extinction is not the same as 'destroyed'. We have clear evidence that mass extinction happened, and in 5 of those times, it was not just couple of species, but rather huge number. Some rare survived, thanks to their abilities, proving once more evolution as survival. Take crocodiles for example, who survived dinosaurs mass exinction. Guess how did they survive and what do we know today about this species. It has to do something about food, feeding, heart rate... I will let you to discover something what kids learn in school.

Not sure what narcotics you have to be on to think about galaxy as fine tuned place, where our species can survive only on this planet, we know how many times life was on brink of extinctions and it is still very doubtful if we as specie will survive...

Are tsunamis par of fine tuning, volcanoes such as Tera witch destroyed most advanced civilization of that time are also fine tuning? What about super volcano that grows underneath rocky mountains? All of those are part of fine tuning?

Susskind will explain

Watch the video linked above

He literally wrote the book

Please follow this link to my post on different topic. Note first video is regarding topic itself, but after that there are links to 8 videos that cover 'how fine tuned' galaxy destroyed life on earth at least 5 times that we know, and if you follow next couple posts, you will find info on book about next extinction event that is taking place right now. (yes, we are doing it)

This reminds me of George Carlin on religion...

Something is wrong here. War, disease, death, destruction, hunger, filth, poverty, torture, crime, corruption, and the Ice Capades. Something is definitely wrong. This is not good work. If this is the best God can do, I am not impressed. Results like these do not belong on the résumé of a Supreme Being. This is the kind of # you'd expect from an office temp with a bad attitude. And just between you and me, in any decently-run universe, this guy would've been out on his all-powerful ass a long time ago. And by the way, I say "this guy", because I firmly believe, looking at these results, that if there is a God, it has to be a man.

Your words not mine

You belive that life has been destroyed 5 times

Not me

You believe the contsants of iur univeres only applys in this galexy

Not me

You seem a little confused and may be on some narcotics of your own

Not me

Eta lol and you got stars for defending yourself from your own words. Shows how much people actually read .And howmany really deny ignorance doesnt it

Eeta 3.5 billion year old fossil . Now who needs kiddie school again?

So it is just simple mater of bad wording, sorry, my fault.

So, to get back to basics - mass extinction and destruction of life on our planet so far from what we know - never was 100%, there is always something that survived, from stubborn bacteria to species that had capability to overcome given extinction (as from example crocodiles that I have already mention).

You missed to tell me what you have found about crocodiles, what special ability allowed them to survive mass extinction?

This all would be much more clear to you if you followed the link and watched those videos. I know, it is long (at least 8-9 hours, but you can't possibly hope to get educated with 15 minutes videos.

No

Now that you have stated your "wording was bad" there is no need

Find a quote where I say that life was ever destroyed

I knew crocodiles survived mass extinction

But you though , and im paraphraseing

Life was destroyed five times in this fine tuned galexy

Padawan you still have much to learn

No following you... I did not say anything different then what I said before.

You are one trying to ignore evidence of mass extinction for utopian idea of galaxy being fine tuned just for your own existence, where all evidence points otherwise.

You can try to derail discussion all you want, but you will still end up on the same track - there is no evidence for fine tuning and yes, we have evidence that points that multiple times life hardly survived, this includes even our own kinds, where it would be decimated to about 18 thousands survivors.

Here is some homework for you - The Fallacy of Fine-Tuning: Why the Universe Is Not Designed for Us
