I think this tech began in the Napoleanic wars, but- if I'm wrong about that... then American Civil War at the latest. Doesn't mean the concept is invalid. Different generation of telescope installed is all.

They should build thousands of them, and paint black and white stripes on them ( to avoid friendly fire ) and call them EBB2A... Enhanced Barrage Balloon, version 2a.

Wish they filled them with hydrogen like the good 'ol days, man what a show !

Update, Saturday 4;11 PM :

Blimp is down ! I repeat ... aerostat based at Ft. Huachuca is down again, due to high winds. Forcast is days more of these conditions ( ie : system disabled ) . Do your worst !

LOL.....I needed a good laugh today. That reminded me of the movie "SO I married an ax murderer." Where they said "the piper is down, I repeat....the piper is down!"

We use these same white "Blimps" at all of our FODs in Afghanistan. I wish I had taken a photo to share, but they are so common it would be like taking a pic of a "T" wall.

The Air Force Times had an article about them being used in East Coast cities.
