Cool find.

I kind of like this comment on the original story on discovery.com

most logical explanation.
no seriously. If you see something strange do you walk up to it first? *if your [sic] not dumb* or do you throw a rock. and see if it reacts.

Hmmm perhaps they "NASA" are finally admitting strange stuff happens on Mars...

Geez I am going to start sounding like Arken.

Perhaps a gust of wind toppled it over from wherever it was previously (?)

If the conditions on mars changed slowly over eons would not the remaining life be,1 very well camorflaged i.e look like rocks and 2 be very think skinned to protect it self from u.v radiation.

Here is the link to the original sol3540 photos on the NASA site. The top 4 images on that page all show the rock (or whatever it is) that appeared since the sol2528 photos.

if I had to guess I would have said the pictures were the other way around as in the before it seems there is a mark of the rock

from the things Soylent said in their post.... the 'rock' had 3 days to wind up there to be photographed right next to the rover camera

i looked up the Mars time lines,' Days' being 24hts 37-39 minutes long & the pics made on Day 3528 & 3540...Which is 12 Days difference between pic w/o rock & the later pic w/ mystery rock...

we do know that ISON is nothing more than a debris field after rounding the Sun...
the comet trail might be responsible for that 'rock'...seeing how the other debris field of the disintegrated comet has not yet intersected with the distant Mars orbit as yet (the debris field is in area between the orbits of Venus and the Earths orbit at present)

so, a chance in a trillion? that the 'rock' is some of the trailing pebbles that broke off ISON as it was approaching the Sun--- and the rock came into Mars at a low angle and skipped the surface to rest right there--- instead of cratering like many meteorites tend to do

or perhaps the rock is a fragment of an exploding meteorite... have the AmateurAstronomers look for new pock marks in the vicinity

i can't think of any other explaination, (said Watson to Sherlock)

[nore]

a earlier poster left this link for the thread to read...not to ignore...it seems that the rover might have went around in a spin because one side was not working... and the rover itself may have pushed the rock there as it spun around... the engineers will need to take a panorama shot of the area that is the length of the sweeping motion of the rovers disabled traction device...

news.discovery.com...

look very carefully in the lower left corner... the soil & pebbles appear to be messed with between the before & after photos

lions & tigers & bears, oh my

Yeah, Indigent, that’s the first thing that caught my eye in these pics. It seems like more than a coincidence that the rock in the after shot fits right over the impression in the before shot.

I was wondering if anyone else would notice that...

what was the last batch of photos (soL) Opportunity took before it got stuck ? ...Maybe it was getting to close too something,,,i.e. "The Truth"

Could've been a small marsquake that dislodged it.

If someone could make a wide-angle blink gif of "before" and "after", maybe we could see where the rock came from (there would be a small pit in its original location).

Spirit is the rover that got stuck, and that was several years ago.

These images were just taken last week by Spirit's twin, Opportunity -- which is still able to move, and has just celebrated its 10-year anniversary of roving on Mars (which is pretty good for a mission that was (nominally) scheduled to last 90 days).

Well after some consideration i am going to bet 1 pound that the thing has -grown. Its a martian mushroom/cactus feeding of condensation and sunlight.

Normally I see posts like this and it's always someone saying.

Hey this rock looks like a martian rodent, alien life form etc...

This time the rock is just a rock.

But how did it get there is the question.

I hope everyone gets a laugh out of this posts.

We have life forms that look like plants and animals of other types and rocks right here on earth. Why is it not possible to have rock looking life on another planet.

Now, on the other hand (there's always an other hand):

Zoom in and check out the pipettes sticking out from this rock, there are several, and one (near the bottom left) is giving off a very nice shadow. If this rock was "flipped" over, as they guess, where were those pipettes when it was laying on its original side. Or are they maybe made of original mud from the bottom of the Gale Crater Lake:

it looks like an interesting slug like creature, it could open or spread the top when it wants sun or when it moves.
