Exactly, I'm glad someone finally sees what I'm talking about. Swinging is just adultery that the parties have accepted and are ok with. It's like the people I've been talking to haven't come to terms with this realization yet and are lashing out at me for calling it like I see it. I mean, I'm just calling a spade a spade.

And casting your own personal judgement along with calling it a "spade".

Perhaps everyone could just stop being so judgmental of everyone else? Now there's an idea

This thread is a great example of the rampant problem with "morality", nobody believes the same thing, based on everything from how they were raised to the definitions of words.

I starred your post since I agree whole heartily with this sentence. That is why legislating morality is wrong and people should mind their own business.

If you believe in objective right and wrong, then adultery is always wrong even when swinging because marriage is an exclusive covenant/contract between two people, and you are breaking that to be with someone else, even if your spouse agrees to it.

Only people who believe that there are no objective right and wrong would say that adultery is not immoral.

I wouldn't consider it to be right nor wrong.

It would just be pointless.

The exceptionalism was that those exceptional people had an easier time getting ahead if they came here. Well, until the government made it so darn hard to get ahead.

Life really is simple, cut, and dried for you when you follow a book written by men.

Isn't it?

You can put me down for that all you want. It's not my intent to stop people if that's what they do, but that doesn't change the view that your vows generally have you promising exclusivity to each other. That means you are in violation of your vows when you commit adultery like it or not.

But then, I also have that messy and doubtless to you, old-fashioned idea that when I give my word, I ought to keep it.

The problem with that is at its base all legislation is someone's morality in some form or other. You can't escape it. It's all based on what someone or some people think is right or wrong.

No, I don't think so. If it was agreed upon, it wouldn't be considered cheating I don't think. Cheating is telling someone that they are the only one, then going behind their back and screwing another.

I see some have said what I was saying. Cheating, and agreeing to not be sexually exclusive is not the same thing. I have known plenty of people, including myself, that were in relationships like that. One example other than me, was a friend that was in the military. They had an agreement that when he was deployed, they were both OK with the other getting intimate with another, should they so choose. In their case, both chose not to, but the option was there.

Adultery is not wrong because there are married people that have agreed to allow their partner to sleep around. Usually the agreement is only implied. When two people agree to be exclusive with one another but then I would agree its a moral violation. Naturally both men and women sleep with multiple partners in a way that works just fine. Monogamy is a cultural value, not a moral value.

Also, "Cheating on your taxes" is a ridiculous phrase meaning different things to different people and won't produce a meaningful response. How about "Is avoiding the Democrats taxes by leaving them the bill for their nonsense we have no interest in immoral"? All I did was load the phrase equally badly in the opposite direction.

Thanx! Fascinating numbers for and outsider looking in (though in some ways most of the ppl on this site prob feel like that). I'd love to see similar stats for South Africa.

Of course this does beg the question of what is 'Morally wrong'. I believe that basing your moral framework on an externally prescribed rule set is only morally acceptable for chidren, and immature ones at that. Morals should flow from your search for the elegant balance of creating life enhancing optimizations in expending energy for all levels of identity (you and the people you interact with), sub-identity (your organs, cells, health in general) and super identities (communities, cities, countries, species, companion species, ecologies, earth/Gaia etc.) and as you mature your consiousness of the extent of the stack, up, down and horizontally expands. This is of course indistinguishable from the concept of spirituality in practice.

2014 - 94% say Adultery is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 92%.

What a silly word: Adultery. Very whiteblack. Cheating? Reprehensible. Explicitly agreed open relationship: if it works for both (or the whole group
, go for it!

2014 - 90% say cheating on your taxes is morally wrong. in 1987 it was 86%.

Shirking your responsibility to invest in your community and up: weasel. Supporting a corrupt government: bad monkey! Paying them because you're not ready for that fight: borderline acceptable.

2014 - 57% say having an abortion is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 62%.

The most difficult of the lot. Overpopulating a planet: arguably wrong, definitely stupid. Depends on the case I think, being responsible for initiating a wasted life is just as dodgy. Opposing contraception: definitely a bad idea. Having sex without planning for the possibility: irresponsible (ok the gays get a free lunch here, maybe that's what makes them so unpopular in uptight circles...efg.

2014 - 50% say engaging in homosexual behavior is morally wrong. in 1987 it was 82%.

I really don't get this one. Look at nature, it's everywhere. Prohibiting the free expression of love between consenting adults is definitely evil never mind wrong. Shees people, one of the pure joys in life is allowing other people to be different and reaping the benefits of divergent specialization.

2014 - 46% say looking at pornographic material is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 58%.

I dunno about this one, but one thing is sure, making movies with plots that weak will definitely land you in hell! Hiehiehie.

2014 - 35% say smoking dope is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 70%.

Entheogens are soul medicine. Withholding medicine to those who need it is absolutely evil. Look at the state of the world. Look at people's attitude towards life and connectedness before and after entheogens. This attitude is part of what is making us kill ourselves and trying to take the planet with us.

2014 - 32% say living with someone before marriage is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 54%.

Very arb. Completely situational.

2014 - 16% say drinking alcohol is morally wrong. In 1987 it was 38%.

Putting yourself under the influence of large amounts of the only drug that really makes you lose your discression is stupid but can be justifiable if done in a safe space for experimentation. Having any if you know you have a problem with it, is just a bad idea.

Now what IS morally wrong is toxic pollution. All these questions and they don't address the most urgent issue of our time. That is mortally wrong!

If both of you have agreed to do it, it ceases to be cheating.

Swingers aren't 'cheating' ... but they are committing adultery.
The definition of adultery is sex outside of marriage.
And that's what 'swinging' is ... sex outside of marriage.
It's accepted by both parties .... but by definition it's still adultery.

I would agree with you concerning adultery.

When you sit down and think about it, are swingers inside of a marriage still cheating? Well yes they are. But, just because cheating is usually 'wrong' in most cases, it wouldn't be considered wrong in this case. But, as I said they still would be considered cheating. Or committing adultery if you will.

Right- Something that is honest, accepted, ethical, or morale.

Wrong- Something that is not accepted, dishonest, hurtful, unethical, and immoral.

Now, let's say I am married, and I cheat on my wife. Would that be wrong? Yes, it would be a dishonest, and an unfaithful thing to do. And it is something we have agreed will not be accepted. So that would fit the definition of "wrong."

And when you look at swingers for example, was their act of cheating 'wrong?' No it was not. Their acts of cheating was not dishonest, or unaccepted. It actually is encouraged. So if anything, swingers who cheat on each other are actually doing 'right' by each other.
