If you are a smoker in the US, you have it good.......same as fuel.

$1:68 ltr for Diesel ($6.35 a gallon)
$1:56 ltr for Petrol/Gas ($5.90 a gallon)

$27 a packet is just the start, they intend to increase that price 12.5% a year for the next 5 years to curb Australia's smoking habits??

I would be interested to see what percentage of the population smokes here?

I really know only a handful of people as opposed to 10 years ago when many more people smoked.

That's really sad and disgusting. How much is alcohol there? Know many alcoholics?

I enjoy very little of my life, the one thing I have is cigarettes, if they took that ability for me to afford them I'd seriously commit suicide I couldn't find any enjoyment in living the rest of my life not being able to enjoy something I like.

It's detestable, how many smokers have killed someone and yet they are more expensive and frowned upon more than alcoholics? Just detestable.

They have gotten out of hand With new tactics, the militarization of local municipalities, it's gonna get worse before better. This will all back fire on them someday.

You'll likely fit in better in Canada

It's expensive (you're used to that) but we still have a few freedoms

Next thing you know, the grammer police will be out rounding up all the bad spellers. Maybe the " PUFF PATROL and the GRAMMER NAZIS can team up. If you can't spell cigarette correct...off to jail you go. I am in N.C. home of tobacco, and I pay $3.26 for Pall Mall Blues, per pack.

Whoa!

Man that is cheap. We are royally ripped of over here.

Everything is expensive. Everything.

Median house price in Perth is now $590,000

A pint of swanky European Beer in the CBD is $20 plus

Fuel, cigarettes, beer and life taxed taxed taxed.

Sure wages are good.

180k plus (mining) but it sure gets gobbled up.

You have it good.

How did I just know that alcohol is cheaper than cigs there?
Love to know the whole premise for that. I mean how can something like alcohol that causes lowered reaction times and causes literally thousands of deaths in auto accidents across the globe be less deplorable than smoking that only kills the smoker (thanks to new laws on where you can/can't smoke) No innocent bystanders are dying from smokers anymore.

This is why I view all cops a culpable. Three other officers standing around letting her carry on. They all know it goes on but don't do anything about it. Accessory to a crime.

Well in defense of the cop, the guy was being a total a**hole from the get go. And of course he pulled the race card as well, I suppose there's no chance she actually walked over there to tell him smoking isn't allowed on the property, nope it had to be his ethnicity and the way he was dressed.

I'm also willing to bet he was smoking a fatty and got cocky after eating the evidence. He did say he didn't have any cigarettes on him.

i suspect because alcohol is a great revenue maker.....and you can bet your bottom dollar that fines for smoking will increase.....these numnuts need to create revenue what better way to do it than go after the average joe

How do you treat a gang of armed thugs? I've given up on the positive reinforcement approach.

smoking that only kills the smoker

I'm guessing Australia has government paid healthcare, like Canada.
If something's addictive, and unhealthy for the user of the substance, it costs the government too much money.
So they boost the taxes on the item through the roof

Alcohol induced death isnt a long term health cost, so they don't want it to go away - it just is likely good tax revenue

With the US, at the moment, poor health still makes corporate insurance companies $$$$$$$

If the US ever gets government paid doctors, bypassing insurance companies, you'll be taxed to death on cigs, junk food, alcohol, etc

For sure, a 6 pack of beer is (Coopers Pale Ale) $15

Wine is stupidly cheap, $5 for a bottle of plonk.

When I first came here in 98 (originally from UK) Jim Beam and coke was $1 now it will cost you $10 in a bar. Your average bottle of beer here costs between $7 and $10 a bottle in a bar and that's Aussie crap. Try something a little more racy and pow, you're paying for it!
