We will respect your desire to take a break, but I doubt that you will be able to avoid the "good vibrations" that we all will be sending you!

I'm certain that when you do reenter the fray, your head will be so clear and refreshed you'll be giving us all a run for our money, some head scratching questions and profound insights, even more so than usual!

It is good to take a break then come back with a new perspective. The threads you mentioned are hot topics and things are going to get heated. No matter how many facts you throw at someone they are going to see what they want to see. It also makes them angry because part of them does not want to hear the facts and this how you know you have them. All those ad hominem attacks mean nothing. It is poor debating skills when you resort to name calling. Also I have seen people dance around arguments and don't fully read posts which also makes it frustrating for someone trying to get a point across. Or the guy is a total moron and it is like talking to a wall. Being a lurker for a long time and reading a lot of the posts on a thread. That is a pattern I have seen. Don't be afraid to be wrong, my view of an op has changed because of a post.................. I blab on sometimes. Maybe lurk around for a while. You learn quite a lot for observing....Take care

Hey Charles,

Taking a break once in a while is a wise thing to do. My opinion only of course but I always find that when a time comes that ATS seems too vitriolic or too boring or simply frustrates me with trollishy (is that a word??) threads and a serious lack of outstanding ones, then I need to step back a week or two (or three )...and just empty my mind.

And oftentimes, I'll come to realize that it's not ATS really that is the problem, it's how I perceive it. A break has always helped me refocus on the good things that I like to see on ATS and I do hope that the decision you've taken helps you the same way.

There was a thread recently about comet ison and nasa recently where I posted about how much of the nastiness in that thread was unnecessary and there are a few people who agreed and this is the second thread I've found recently, which specifically talked about the nastyness and rudeness, then I just started looking at the thread by skeptic overlord, that you linked in the OP , but anyway something that I had said in one of those threads was about how I lurked here for three years before joining almost two years ago, and the reason I joined was because of the good intelligent and RESPECTFUL conversations I've seen here on any number of subjects that are not mainstream conversations, but as of the past few months there are certain members here that have gotten really nasty. Some of them long time members, most of them relatively new members, my question is, is it possible that this website has gotten so large and popular that we have acquired some paid trolls to come here and intentionally derail rational conversation with hateful rhetoric and hateful argumentative behavior ?

I took a year off a while back, and it was good for my spirits, but I was glad to come back, because there is a lot about ATS that you miss when you don't visit.

Hope to see you back before long Charles, and your seat in the ATS Radio studio is always yours!

Dear ATSers,

I want to thank you as sincerely as I can for your kind words and support. I have some individual messages to send out, but this seemed to be the first place to check in.

I wish I could say that all of the issues are resolved, and that I've learned the Mystical Secrets of wherever mystical secrets come from, but I haven't. I have had some thoughts about ATS survival, I suppose I should throw them in a thread, but they're certainly not secret or very new.

It's time to buckle down and get back to work. If any of you know of an interesting thread that I should jump into, I'd be grateful for the information, otherwise starting fresh from this moment seems to be the plan.

Again, my deepest thanks to you all.

Charles is back!! We've had some 'changes of personae dramatis' on the boards; I think you'll enjoy a refreshed browse into what's been going on.

Off the cuff, here in the predawn with my tea, I know there are threads now active that really could use your input - but until I'm a bit more "warmed up" I won't be able to name them.

Been thinking of you, and hoping your spirits are lifted!!

The winter is always hard for me. Yesterday we had relief from the deadly Polar Vortex, and it reached 60F! I was able to soak up some Vit D in my shirtsleeves, and what an enormously overdue treat that was! I wound up in a cleaning frenzy (a good thing)...

And now, behold!, Charles has returned!!

I hadn't gone to check, but if what you say is true, Algernon old lad, I will frankly say that I'm astonished.

While it's true that I was hoping for the Mods to take some action to restore civility, I never would have expected them to nuke two fora (or forums, your preference). Things must have really gotten out of hand for them to say, "It's completely out of control. Some rabble rousers wanted to disrupt the thread? We'll show them, we'll close the thread completely, so there."


As far as the reason for my break, that may be explained very simply. My signature calls for love, even from an empty heart. My heart had gone beyond empty, it was starting to fill with annoyance, frustration, anger, and a willingness to condemn. I couldn't allow that to infect ATS, or continue to grow in me, so I walked away from the source of the infection and got some vaccine.

It's good to see you again. You are both an inspiration and a source of worry to me. No one can doubt your passion and dedication. The energy you display must be similar to the energy required to lift a rocket into orbit. My worry is that you may run out of fuel. There are posters here who must be typing on their laptops from Bellvue or some medium-security prison. Working with them is very draining and ultimately fruitless. "Ploughing the waves" is, I believe the expression.

Thank you for your kind thoughts, I am amazed when anyone feels that way about me, but that may be better addressed in a U2U if you happen to be interested. (But actually, I'd prefer to hear about you and how in the world you got to 60 degrees.)

I suspect that my time away was also a sort of cleaning frenzy, both of myself and my immediate surroundings. I'll let you know about it sometime, if you care.

I had hoped you weren't taken in by my vast and stunning charm, my astonishing physique, and my gargantuan personal wealth.

But no, you have failed to observe the tender and sensitive side of my nature. Oh, when will I ever be released from this curse of wealth, beauty, charm, and mighty power? When will the world see me as just another man instead of a vending machine for glittering souvenirs? It's tough I tell you. If it wasn't for one mystery woman, I would surrender to despair.
