An investigation into a mysterious shooting of two soldiers in Belgrade has reveled a huge secret underground complex of tunnels and bunkers beneath the Serbian capital. The system, left over form the communist era, comprises a 2 square mile area. It may have also served as a haven for Serbian war criminals. The bunker came to light as part of an investigation into the October 5th shooting of two guards at an entrance to the complex.

BELGRADE, Serbia-Montenegro - A probe into the mysterious shooting of two soldiers has revealed the existence beneath the Serbian capital of a secret communist-era network of tunnels and bunkers that could have served as recent hideouts for some of the world's most-wanted war crimes suspects.

The 2-square-mile complex dubbed a "concrete underground city" by the local media was built deep inside a rocky hill in a residential area of Belgrade in the 1960s on the orders of communist strongman Josip Broz Tito. Until recently its existence was known only to senior military commanders and politicians.

The secret was revealed during an investigation this month into the deaths of two soldiers who were guarding an entrance to the complex. Both were found fatally shot.

Its an interesting find. One has to wonder is there are other complexes like this in other former Warsaw Pact countries (Yugoslavia was not I realize). Sophia in Bulgaria would be another spot to look, or even Skopje in Macedonia. It is also interesting to note that according to the article, Saddam Hussein like the complex so much, he hired the same design team to build him duplicate one in Iraq.

Good find Fred T,
i wouldnt be suprised if your correct in your asumption of other similar underground complexes exsisting in former warsaw pact countrys?
I think what seems to be strange with these base networks is that they do lie undiscovered for long periods of time, lol obviously hence the title "secret tunnel networks" even when i would have thought the man power needed in their construction would have been substantial and raised some suspicions from local people living above in the city?
I also have a friend that was one of the "chiefs" in the design team that built bunkers for saddam hussein in the 80's,when the first gulf war kicked off he was taken out their with the allies to provide information regarding "weak spots" in their design, helping the allies with their "bunker buster" weapons.

Regards.

They are probally worldwide things. Tunnel networks probally exist across the globe in every country. Most of them are still secret, which is what makes them so great!
Scary what could be going on down in them though...

This thing is nothing special it consists of several tunnels and bunkers for the president's family and high ranking officials. It connects the Topchider military base, with the presidents villa, maybe a hsopital, and several other objects, it has also an exit to and underground railroad line. I have persnally been to one part of this complex during 1999.

The killing of two soldiers occured if they have either seen something they shouldn't have or they have killed each other.

Lots of countries have underground facilities apparently built during the 50's and sixties. Even the poorest countries do.
I remember during this years hurricanes hitting the Atlantic Fidel Castro revealed his to his people, explaining they were built during the cold war and was making them available as shelter for them.
