That's OK. They're also shooting snowy owls at JFK airport, too.

I understand the dangers and damages caused when a bird gets caught in a plane engine, but why are we shooting them rather than netting them? Are snowy owls that numerous at any one time that we couldn't do it?

I believe it takes more than one bird to bring down a large plane? Typically, it's a flock of whatever that causes problems? Off topic I suppose.

Anyhow, Logan airport captures and relocates the owls. JFK probably shoots them because it's cheaper but I'm not sure. There are several a petitions in NYC right now regarding the JFK method.

It does usually take more than one to bring down a plane, but not to damage one.

Regardless, they are shooting the owls..

Talk about a major thinking error. This is a oxymoron. How in the hell can you speak of " Green Energy" and at the same time justify killing eagle's that's also our nations mascot?

I honestly don't know what to make of this. I've never looked into this very much.

The birds (of all types) are disappearing, personally I believe it is a combination of cellular and other radio frequencies (RF) and pestisides/herbisides in their food supplies. Were it not for those factors, I don't believe that wind farms would cause any significant damage to any bird population; by their nature birds have to be sensitive to wind currents and I doubt they would approach an area of such turbulance without being disabled in some prior manner.

Yes wind farms will be in prime hunting grounds for predatory birds, open fields where the birds can see for miles.

I don't know enough about the subject to really know. However, it is fact that airports are bad for birds and we have never debated their wisdom, maybe we should.

When I was young and first living in Los Angeles, I remember huge flocks of birds overhead during their migrations - no more; pigeons & seagulls were everywhere, rather rare today. Birds used to be everywhere, not so much today and now I live in a semi rural area. Mostly we have crows and, of all things, parrots (thank you Busch Gardens).

Well of course this is FAR from being a new problem. Just a tip of the iceberg. And indeed we're actually deep into it. Birds are increasingly disappearing continental-wide, and this seems to be a systemic issue, that's got to do with industrial process.

....unless it is caused by the geoengineering chemtrails, which is a very credible culprit as well!

If you think about it, stuff like the barium oxide and aluminum they spray at high altitude should be toxic enough to kill all kinds of birds. Earthly walking creatures next, since it gets in the rain water...

Wrabbit2000and do everything possible to avoid killing the birds.

The part you missed is that permits have been available since 2009, and no one has gotten one. Since they don't have a permit, they have not been doing anything to prevent deaths, and little to nothing has been against them.

So moving forward this may be a positive step, but why has nothing been done yet?

Okay, I'm lost. The OP article very clearly says they ARE taking measures to prevent the deaths of birds. So, by definition, you're assuming everything in the OP article is false in it's face?


Also, to be frank? I am not going to wring my hands or even lose a moments sleep over birds being minced through windturbines which even I can clearly see from several miles away. These aren't subtle or made to blend into ,..pretty much anything. They can't be made any more obvious to stand out from what is around them, save for maybe painting them all blaze orange. Tho..would birds even respond to that?

Anyway... Sorry for our avian friends, but we DO SHARE this big rock, and that is not, as some would make it, a ONE sided concept. They can avoid suicide by windmill or they can fly right into what couldn't be missed by a blind man (they are ANYTHING but quiet, close up, too...so it's really baffling).

Bottom line tho? I like my electricity and the insanity over EVERY animal, EVERYWHERE needing protection at the EXPENSE of anything and everything man may want to do now? Well... It's become extreme to the point of fanatic in many cases. Just...fanatic.

I believe your confusion stems from your missing this part of the article.

Right now, as an AP investigation has documented, wind farms are killing eagles in violation of the law. Not a single wind energy company has a permit authorizing the killing, harm or harassment of eagles, although five-year permits have been available since 2009. That puts companies at legal risk and discourages private investment in renewable energy.

It also doesn’t help eagles, since without a permit, companies are not required to take steps to reduce their impact on the birds or report when they kill them.

They are supposed to get a permit, they are supposed to take measures.

They are NOT getting permits, they are NOT taking measures. Why are they allowed to get away with it?

I was out in the woods deer hunting today......very very cold...As i stand there alone in the woods i look up and see a bald eagle riding the wind above me, and perch in the tree not to far from me...Amazing creatures our national bird...Then this thread came to mind, and i was hit with disgust that they would even consider, let a lone allow the killing of this awesome bird of prey. It's hard to believe they will shut down billion dollar industries because of an owl yet there solution to the wind farm problem is kill them....Shame! shame! shame!
