Japan Secures Final Passage Of Secrecy Bill - Designed by Kafka & Inspired By Hitler?!!

Well this is disturbing (to say the least.) It appears Japan has decided that the concept of open government is no longer a good thing and has circled the wagons in an effort to clamp down on issues they consider "secret." Maybe it was because all those pesky reporters asking about the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant disaster.

Shinzo Abe secured final passage of a bill granting Japan’s govt sweeping powers to declare state secrets. The Bill won final approval of the measures at about 11:20 p.m. Tokyo time.

- The first rule of the pending Japan’s Special Secrets Bill is that what will be a secret is secret.

- The second rule is that anyone who leaks a secret and a reporter who writes it up can face up to ten years in jail.

- The third rule is that there are no rules at to what government agency can declare state secrets and no checks on them to determine they don’t misuse the privilege.

- The fourth rule is that anything pertaining to nuclear energy is of course a state secret.

OK, so at least part of this appears to be inspired by politicians who want to keep a lid on the nuclear problems Japan (and now the world) is facing. Thanks for that by the way. Is there any other reason(s) for Japan's leading political party to push this through?

An Upper House member of the Diet said on background to JSRC, “Deputy Prime Minister Aso Taro sort of telegraphed the punches of the administration by expressing his admiration for how the Nazi Party forcefully changed the German constitution this summer.

Obviously, we’re not Nazis in Japan–because we hardly have any Jews, but we are like the defeated post World War I Germany in that we do not have the right to wage war to defend ourselves from our enemies. Just as Germany needed a strong man like Hitler to revive defeated Germany, Japan needs people like Abe to dynamically induce change.”

The hawkish Prime Minister Abe has publicly stated his ambition to revise Japan’s constitution to rid it of Article 9, which forbids Japan from waging war. Upper house Diet member, Taro Yamamoto and others have publicly stated they believe the current bill is a stepping-stone to recreate a fascist Japan, as it existed prior to the Second World War.

What!??! A "stepping stone to recreate a fascist Japan"??!! Any ATS members from Japan or with additional input able to add to this very disturbing turn of events?

If I recall correctly, the sanction were on oil, which hurt Japan's war machine in China and elsewhere. It was a way of the U.S. to enter the war by poking a hornet's nest into the eye of a gorilla.

It was not limited to the US. The oil embargo in place was successfully enforced by the US working with the British and Dutch, who both had a significant presence in the area. It was also supported by a number of western governments - many Japanese assets within the control of western governments were also frozen.

Admittedly I might have misunderstood your points. Google Translate can only do so much.

So why does their current government wish to recreate a fascist Japan, just to cover up details of their nuclear disaster? Doesn't make sense to me unless they want to prepare for war and do away with any transparency of government.

What would you have them do? Is it better to lie to the citizens and have life, such as it is, go on as it has been with no major turmoil, or would you flat tell the truth and risk mass, continued panic?

It takes no genius to decide which is the most prudent course whether you are talking about a whole country being wasted with radioactive substances or withhold the truth about UFOs that would devastate the whole world in terms of everything humans hold dear.

In other words how would you expect them to act and what would you want?
'Same answer, a no-brainer, do as little as possible.
And that is exactly what we are seeing.

Wow that is scary. I have a lot of respect for Japan. I love their culture (especially anime and manga), their women are beautiful, and they have a rich, colorful history that is under appreciated in the west. I say all this as a Caucasian too. If they go down this route, sadly it is one I cannot follow. Though considering the US government labeling whatever the hell they want to be top secrets and prosecuting more whistleblowers than ever before, I can see what inspired the Japanese...

An interesting perspective so let me get this straight. You believe that governmental (flat-out) lying, criminalizing the truth or even asking questions is the best plan for people. Maybe if they told the truth at least some people could remove themselves from a dangerous situation. Is that really a bad idea?

Regardless whether it's radiation or the Borg, personally I'd prefer a bit of a head's up before being assimilated. Human's are resilient and they'll adapt to terrible news, what they won't adapt to is an overdose of radiation poisoning.

Has there really ever been such a thing as an open government ?
I'm pretty sure the Japanese are only doing what our governments have been doing forever.
Isn't it legal for the American government to flat out lie using the new propaganda laws ?
At the end of the day at least they are being honest about wanting to keep the peoples noses out of the peoples business.

I think the Japanese realize that the U.S. as allies are spread too thin and have civil and economic turmoils at home. They need to take a more aggressive stance with their pacific partners like China and N.Korea and do not want to appear weak. I think their mindset culturally about war and public Image is foreign to most westerners so we might interpret it as fascist or authoritarian. They may also intend to use military development to bolster their economy which is deeply in debt. They probably fear China has become too big to handle and that their constitution crafted by the U.S. has left them ill prepared to deal with Chinese expansion and is too dependent on the U.S. . They are a sovereign nation and should be allowed to defend their interest which may include preemptive strikes which are currently as far as my understanding barred by their constitution.

ETA: I am sure we are also unaware of espionage and spying attempts by the Chinese to steal things like technology from Japan which may be why they are ramping up security/secrecy. There could also be attempts by the Chinese to influence Govt. through lobbying and business deals and psyops or smear campaigns.

The truth is that the country needs to be evacuated to properly deal with the immediate situation. Then the Northern Hemisphere needs to be evacuated to deal with the airborne fall out. Then the Earth needs to be evacuated from the contaminated foods and fluids travelling the globe.

The situation, as I understand it, will be F$#%^&.

The truth is too much. Ignorance is bliss. I'm glad I live in the Southern Hemisphere.

So they are going to secretly evacuate 127 million people? And at the same time they create legislature to keep the 127 million in the dark about being evacuated? See a problem with this yet?

Here's an update to the original story.

Japan’s controversial new state secrets law was condemned Saturday as “the largest ever threat to democracy in postwar Japan” by a group of academics, including two Nobel prize winners, reports said.

In a strongly worded attack on the new law, a group of 31 academics, including Nobel Prize winners Toshihide Maskawa and Hideki Shirakawa, accused the Japanese government of threatening “the fundamental human rights and pacifist principles” established by the country’s constitution.

Have to say I think these guys are right. Just because the US is persecuting whistle blowers and reporters was no reason for Japan to follow suit. Too late now.
