Mysterious China-themed 'city' proposed in New York’s Catskills

U.S. immigration officials are considering a proposal from Chinese investors to create a multibillion-dollar development in New York’s Catskills called "China City" -- raising concerns among critics about the potential cost to U.S. taxpayers and, according to one analyst, the possibility it could be a "stalking horse" for the Beijing government.

A spokesman from the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services told FoxNews.com that the proposal for Thompson, N.Y., has not been approved but is under consideration.

The mysterious proposed development appears to be a step beyond the types of ethnic enclaves scattered throughout U.S. cities, like the Chinatown sections of New York City or San Francisco. The 600-acre "China City of America" is located far outside New York City in upstate New York's wetlands and is a meticulously planned project, calling for family housing, a college and student residences, among other structures. In addition to needing federal approval, it would likely need a host of state and local permits before ground could be broken.

Foxnews,

i seriously thought of just trying to post just "Foxnews" without further comment but I'd violate about 50 million already agreed to requirements when I joined ATS and doesn't want to get busted.

So are we being slowly taken over?

So, WTH?

This good, bad or meh? I read the article and still cant really make heads or tails of this. Maybe someone more edumacated can splain this to me.

I'm not sure what the big deal is. Remember in the 80's when the Japanese were "invading" America? What they were really doing was buying artificially highly priced real estate. Let them.
Side-note: Phoenix actually has a cultural center that is run by COFCO, which is owned by the Chinese government proper. To my knowledge it was funded entirely by the Chinese government and not by local taxpayers.

I wonder if that will be ocean front property when all the earthquakes and tsunamis are done?

NWO - One World - no soveriegn nations - with different ethnicities in charge of the military/police force enforcing UN laws on a different ethnicity. All over the world.

There's a UN map somewhere that's been around for years showing which nation will be policing which district of the world.

Time and time again Slayer you're posts are top notch! Thanks for the heads up. China owns so much of the US anyway, they might as well enjoy their investment(s). That's my 2 cents.

Earlier this year China made a bid to buy up all our forests here in Ireland, which is roughly equivalent to 6% of the country. The Irish government, who are on their arse broke, invited tenders for the company, Coillte, who control the forests.
Needless to say there was a public outcry and the deal didnt happen.
it very nearly did though. it goes to show that maybe the Chinese have an agenda to buy large amounts of foreign land any way they can. Wait a few years and build a mini China there.
it wouldnt surprise me in the least, sure is'nt China way over-populated.
They need new/more land to ease the burden back home

Okay. You know... I think a measured response is warranted. But it is still just... weird. I'm not sure what to make of it.

Chinese citizens are buying up Detroit - a simple goggle search should bring up a number of articles saying that realtors are being called in the middle of the night by chinese citizens - they're buying much of the downtown areas, and a lot of resident housing.

I gotta run, so sorry, no time for links to support it, but they are buying farms in Canada - and businesses, and houses, and yes as well to buying houses and groups of houses site unseen.

I wouldn't be a fan because Detroit's contamination would spread farther around than it already does. I mean, I have friends & family that are currently in the "safety belt" (aka - far enough away from Detroit that the crime coming from there doesn't come out as much). I avoid the 8-mile stretch like the plague - and I'd hate to have to avoid the 16-mile stretch in the future, as all my friends are in those currently "safe" neighborhoods.

However, seeing as Detroit is already an industrial city, I'm sure that China could put it to some good use, maybe even make some money for the state.

As for this other city that is being planned - To me, it sounds like "just another business deal", aka State needs money, wealthy business or group of people have money and want a slice of the pie. Not really that different from the rich people here having vacation homes in other countries (well, maybe when comparing one home to a town).

Yeah we have seen this all happen before. And just like Japan, China will suffer an economic adjustment and they will sell all that stuff back to Americans for pennys on the dollar. Just like Japan did, the Chinese are running around buying up crap in the West because it does not faith in its own economic future. Not that I blame them the change from an economy making cheap junk to a modern service based economy is never an easy one. China is also going to have some serious demographic problems ahead that make the ones in China seem easy to solve.

We've seen this before. In the 80's it was Japan.

China is holding a lot of US dollars. The US dollar is devaluing. The Yen and Yuan are looking increasingly strong against it. They hold an "asset" (paper dollars) that are evaporating. Real estate in Japan/China is extremely expensive. Land here is cheap. It's an easy way to turn increasingly risky US dollars into a solid asset. Real-estate. Or stock in foreign (American/Western) companies. In the short, it is re-capitalizing the US. Let them do it. It's a tiny percentage of assets in North America.
And when the bubble eventually pops and those currencies suffer from inflation (see: Japan-1989), those assets are resold (in many cases Japanese investors lost their shirts).
It's not that scary, but it seems "wrong". Just like it seemed wrong or scary in the 80's.

Exactly. Well, the bubble in Japan was more about the Diet pumped money into the system and encouraged foreign investment because of the trade/currency imbalance. But you're spot on as far as what happened/will happen.

I actually live right outside of Thompson New York. It would be really funny having a bunch of Chinese immigrants mixing with the rednecks up here.
its really weird though there's no jobs up here no prospects and they're going to build a city in the middle of the boonies?

A whole city to build?
Sounds like they may need supplies and laborers

The building of a city creates its own jobs. Even once it's built, there'll be stores, schools, maintenence, etc.
Lots of jobs

There's all those "shovel ready" jobs that were promised.
Just that they're for the new Chinese immigrants....
