About 20-30 pilot whales were spotted Tuesday afternoon in Everglades National Park around 30 miles from land, said Kim Amendola, spokeswoman for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Pod of pilot whales stranded in Everglades National Park

So this is an unprecedented event, as most seem to be these days. These pilot whales are stuck in fairly shallow water in the Florida Everglades and scientists have no idea why they would even enter this area solo much less as a whole pod. A few of them may have already perished. Such unusual behavior for an animal so big.

Not pointing fingers in doom porn directions (fukushima, ISON, NWO, etc.) but for sure thought this was something that had to be shared. Heard on a random radio station that more species are dying off and becoming extinct faster each day. Maybe it isn't man that is killing them directly. Maybe, they are just the smart ones getting off the bus before it crashes on a global scale. So do the whales know something we don't or just too stupid to know what not to do? My guess is they are a hell of a lot smarter than us.

I had to guess?

The whales made a wrong turn, they travel in pods.

Since they are following each other around, when the first ones made a bad turn, the rest followed suit..

I had to guess again, suggesting their committing suicide is way funnier..

I wonder if there was any kind of hi power sonar testing in the gulf that triggered this.

It is sad to see events like this. I've seen beached whales twice in my life. I can only hope that the some of the whales can be saved.

My guess is, they're not. Lost, stranded.......

Sonar for sure could of got them mixed up and take a wrong turn.

Whales killing themselves before impending doom on earth sure sounds better though.

Maybe they are trying to avoid the places they normally go because of the waste in the ocean. I don't just mean trash either. Oil always just happens to be leaking, Fukashima has been spewing waste for years now, etc. We can only see it from an outside point of view and because we don't how animals feel we just assume it's the small things.

I have always heard sea creatures act differently when something is going to happen.. the article I just read about this said its not "that unusual" but it hasn't happened since 1995 and these Pilot whales are not even close to where they normally are. My guess is all of the oil spills are pushing the mammals away from where they normally reside.

You guys do know that there is always some oil leaking into the ocean, right? Oil has been leaking as long as there has been oil to leak. It's natural. There are even naturally occurring bacteria that eat oil.

Also, "unprecedented" may just mean that no human being has been lucky enough to observe a pod of pilot whales cruising around in the Everglades before. No, they don't naturally live there, but just because we've never seen them do it doesn't mean it has never, ever happened.

It's possible that one of them got confused or ill and took a wrong turn. All the others tend to follow. In the respect, pilot whales make a poor case for their intelligence seeming to behave more like sheep.

Sure there have been some leaks and some major spouts that happened in the past and some leaks that are continuous. Still doesn't mean we are pouring in far more than they are used to. I didn't like your rebuttal very much, seemed closed minded.

No, just being realistic. There is no evidence for a major leak at this time.

The sonar theory has some merit to it, but until they do an autopsy that shows evidence of damage, there is no proof of that either.

And I get irked when something like this happens, and everyone rides along on the bandwagon to just automatically assume that if something not observed before is seen that seems odd or off, it must be both unnatural and mankind's fault.

To me, that seems equally close minded.

The natural world is still a mysterious place, and we do not know all there is to know about it particularly when it comes to the oceans and their denizens. For all we know, there is a perfectly reasonable explanation as to why the pilot whales are there. Perhaps they are hunting for something or seeking to shed parasites be drowning them in fresh water, and we have just never observed this particular behavior before.

The alpha was probably sick & beached itself and the rest of them followed suit...

Can't heavy equipment dig a canal back to the sea somehow?

Shouldn't there be contingency measures put in place by now?

This sort of thing happens. They find them from time to time all along the west coast too - usually just 1 at a time though. They come up for a rest and get stuck; or do it to die (if sick/injured).
When they crane them back out to sea I have to wonder if this is what the whales want in all cases. It reminds me of Hancock throwing that whale out to sea (it's just chilling on the beach).

They have been around a long time and have a purpose for these things IMO - they swim up and down so they know the depths and have a natural navigation set in to help them know when it's safe. Why some go too far onto the beach to get back out or miss cues is beyond my understanding but I would guess the leader goes to die and the rest follow in these larger cases, they are chasing krill, or the tides are off (said it happens during full moons).

It's probably a natural thing - oil naturally leaks from the sea floor - so does methane - which worries me more as this might be a warning about a big earthquake?

I just hate the whole corexit crap that isn't "natural".

Animals die in nature, but it still is sad to see. Nothing lives forever.

Just use them as scientific research and eat them already.

Well I hope they have a plan to point them in the right direction if they can, would hate for all of them to die
. I look like such a tough bastard, but Im a huge softy when it comes to puppies, flower, whales and sh!t like that.

Crap. I wanted just a regular : (...instead I got that s#itty emot. what is that green crap anyway???!!!

I've looked into the Naval sonar as being the cause of strandings, but it could be something else. Since Cetaceans (whales) were once land-dwelling animals, it is possible that they are still in a evolutionary phase where they haven't broken all ties to the land. If you look at whale skeletons, they still have vestigial back leg bones. Instinctively they may want to crawl on land, but their huge bodies do not allow it.
