I did a search before posting this, which I'd found in relation to recent events, and I found this thread. There is a newish article discussing the
case in the New Yorker, so I'm adding to it:
Three Years On Rikers Island Without Trial
It is a bit more detailed on description of what happened to this unfortunate boy.
A quick summary is as follows:
Due to his prior run-ins with the law, the accusation of stealing set him behind bars. The case dragged on and on, with the prosecutor(s) continually
rescheduling, then trying to get the boy to plead guilty. A judge even did this. The accuser vanished; he went back to Mexico, apparently. Three
years later, now(or maybe earlier) without a witness, the state dropped its case.
