I don't celebrate any holidays. None.
Christmas, New year, Easter, St Patrick's day, July 4th, Halloween, Thanksgiving. Nope.
I don't put up decorations, carve pumpkins, get a tree. None of it. I don't see the point. It just seems like a big waste of time and money. Sure I can understand wanting to give gifts to people you care about, but why wait for a specific day of the year to use as an excuse?

Why buy or chop down a tree that is going to die and make a mess in your house anyway? Why carve up pumpkins just to throw them away?

It's not that I dislike them, I'm not going to be grumpy and spoil them for everyone else. If I'm with family or friends I'll be a good sport. But I have no use for holidays. I usually volunteer to work on those days so I don't have to bother with it all.

Am I the only one, or are there others?

I used to be the same way. A wife and children will make you do it.

I go through big holidays for the sake of family and tradition but not much else.
What big family gatherings aren't a test of endurance?

It's all going to burn. That's the way of things I see you see it.

Cheers to you,

May you and your pass through the fires.

Peace always.

I was nodding in the affirmative but must confess.. I DO shop, on or about the 27th and 28th when the SALES are worth it and the unappreciative players of 'The Game' have had ample time to return their unwanted sweaters that they didn't want for the Wholy Grail, The Gift Card. Once You figure out that 'Thanksgiving' is EVERY day and because May 31 or any date doesn't get the recognition either should any other date. The only problem or issue is in prior years although the stores were Open, there was nobody in them, now the Friday Sales begin on Wednesday.

Depends what you mean by 'celebrate'.

I listen to carols sometimes at Yule if they're done well (Maddy Prior's A Tapestry of Carols is worth a listen. It sounds sort of mediaeval-y). Have to be in the mood though.

Let's see...I watch the odd film...

No; no, I don't celebrate.

I work.

Don't get me wrong...I have nothing against holidays.
It's just X-mas in particular.
The whole feigned insincerity of the corperate gift giving process.
Look what Black Friday turned people into...more Vines in one night than you could shake a stick at.
Nobody seems to want what the get and nobody ever needs what they want.
People have to be medicated (drunk/h1gh) just to get along but it usually creates more tension than it solves in the end.
People have no money and this is the time of year when they accrue the most debt.
They're going out of their minds.
People getting in stun gun fights over deals?
It's long past out of control.

-Peace-

Actually, the largest group of people that I know of are the Jehovah Witnesses. They don't partake in any of the holidays because they know that the celebrations all began as pagan celebrations long ago and they believe the scriptures say Jehovah doesn't want any of them to participate in them.

Personally, I think the holidays are big money makers for business and it's a great way to fleece more money from us and still have us feel good about it.

I went through that phase myself but then I grew up and celebrated these things again. Family is important, celebrating these things especially thanksgiving and Christmas (or other holidays if you're outside the country) holds importance whether you agree with it or not. If your grandmother invites you to celebrate thanksgiving you're not just going to say no unless you're going to the other side of the family on that year. Sure, commercialism may have taken over Christmas but it's still fun, and you don't need to buy the most expensive gifts or buy anything at all to celebrate it but it adds to the flavor.

ye i am not alone i hate xmas and all that if you stand back and watch the mess it makes all the bins full of rubbish and people trudging through the snow all the cards that end up in the bin how many trees died just for a few days of human happyness .

i have not had a xmas meal in 25 years and refuse to go near people celebrating even on new year which is big in my country i go to my bed early i just cannot be bothered with the noise and mess .

even at 13 i went to the pub to getaway from all the noise in the house rolling in later to start with the trifle and work my way backwards and still doing the same .

i just tell my family and anybody who asks me that i am a satanist they soon leave you alone backing away with a scared look in their eyes
add thank satan for that every now and then to sentences and they soon get the message - do not disturb

I was brought up a Jehovah's Witness, and I watched in heartbreak while other kids had birthday parties, got to dress up for halloween, celebrate Xmas, etc. Let me tell you, it SUCKED and in my humble opinion, it's really about the watchtower org not wanting your money to go towards holidays but sent to them for the worldwide publishing, ahem, preaching work.

I heard them go on and on and on about the pagan origin of holidays, while they got married in white dresses and passed each other weddings rings. The reality is they pick and choose what 'pagan' practices they use based on whether it financially suits home office or not. It's not because they are oh so holy and righteous by any means, they harbor pedophiles by the thousands without alerting authorities because according to them and their committee meetings of church elders, (*think parole committee here*) without two witnesses the guilty party can say I didn't do it and they do nothing at all, whatsoever to protect the child or the community. Just their own asses.

I remember driving along with my parents looking at xmas lights and them talking about the evil old world and how Satan makes the lights pretty to deceive all non jw's. As a kid, I didn't care about the commericalism of the holidays, I just badly wanted to be free to celebrate them and enjoy them. As an adult I love watching my own kids enjoy the holidays and it's never about money, materialism and greed. The problem isn't the holidays themselves in my opinion, it's the consumer zombification of western society.

I can have my cake and eat it too, celebrate them, enjoy them, I just don't get sucked into the holiday traps of competing with others to have more, spend more, get more. So whle others humbug the holidays, I revel in having the right to celebrate them, cause it wasn't a right I had until adulthood.

People do stupid crap all the time in the name of "fun"

The holidays being one such thing, I could take um or leave them myself, once I got a job Holidays lost all meaning to me anyway.

AMEN.

I don't do the big commercial holidays because that's just feeding the banksters, and I don't do the lower key 'candy' holidays because I certainly don't need the calories.

I always volunteered to work the holidays at my hospital job; it was double time and a half but after the gov. taxed it, I barely made out even. Even so, I was happy to work so someone else could be with family, if they had family they could tolerate. Mine, not so much... and when the kids were little, I soon realized that it was all hype and seriously whacked hype at that.

I'll never forget the first day I took the kids back to school after Christmas break when they were in grade school and a little black girl came up to me out of the blue and said, 'Santa Claus couldn't find our house this year...' . My heart about broke.

There's too many people with too much, and too many people with not enough.

My boycotting the whole damn thing is my way of telling the bankers, "NO!" and I'm sure regular readers of this site know why that's rather important. Short of building guillotines, which I fantasize about quite often.
