Exactly.
And so many who argue the "Yellowstone is due" position have either forgotten or never realized that while its first VEI 8 eruption was
cca 2.1 million years ago (mya), the next one (which was still VEI 8 but way less powerful), was cca 1.2 mya -- a time gap of cca 900,000 years. And
the third VEI 8 was about 640,000 ya, meaning cca 560,000 years after the second one. It was bigger than the second, but still less than half the
power of the 2.1 mya event.
Yellowstone's 3 big eruptions in the past 2.1 million years works out at an average of one every 700,000 years. So even looking at that, I have no
idea why people think that YS is somehow "due" to erupt -- or "overdue". Maybe they don't know how to divide 2.1 million by 3?
But the fact is, that 700k-year average means nothing in the real world of super volcanoes. The next eruption might occur in the very near future, but
it might also be hundreds of thousands of years away.
As I've said numerous times on this site, volcanoes like YS are not babies or buses. To say that Yellowstone is "due" or "overdue" is pure ignorance
at best and deliberate fear-mongering at worst.
