Very intriguing if that isn't photoshopped. I guess we will find out soon enough

It certainly does look very, very strange. It looks more like a football, or is diamond shaped. I wonder if a comet has ever shown characteristics such as this in the past? Maybe someone out there can provide the answer to that question. ~$heopleNation

Maybe its like the Destiny in Stargate Universe.. the ship recharges by harnessing the energy from stars in the galaxy. Not a bad idea if you think about it.

Maybe its on its way to the sun to "refuel" and then slingshot back around to Earth.

I remember the Destiny deployed some type of "energy collectors" when it neared Stars, perhaps thats what the "wings" on ISON are... some type of giant energy collection device that it deployed as it neared our Sun to recharge.

A little out there but my Dog of 16 years passed away today, Leading up to her death I learned ISON had increased in brightness by 6. Today I learn ISON has wings. I like to imagine it as a representation of her soul. ISON, came early this year when her troubles began, it has increased in brightness as well as shows wing like wisps. It will leave the solar system a bright spectacle for all to see, and travel the universe.

Would be something wouldn't it? If all this really is happening, was it not that the mayan prophecies were wrongly calculated but recalculated for the end of this year instead of december 2012 just saying?

Looks like a halo and angel wings. Very interesting. I should pay more attention to this. Even if it is a comet and nothing else it is beautiful.

How big is this comet supposed to be?

Quite big, its size is about 3 miles in diameter.

Anyone who reads my posts knows I'm normally a very decent bloke and look at both sides even tho I do believe in other worldly craft, I don't just do the "ITS A UFO!!", I check to see if there's a genuine normal reason for it and if I think there is I say so.

But, this damn comet thing is giving me the willies!

Its doing weird stuff, its very big, its very symmetrical, more so than comets we have photographed at close range and its apparently a brand new comet in this solar system.

I don't know if I want it to do something wonderful or just get the hell away from us.

Never ever felt like this about a foreign body coming this way.

Most comets "grow a tail" once solar radiation/winds start causing the ice to melt and turn into a gas, this happens when the comet approaches the inner part of a solar system (in our case, once past Jupiter, I think).

Yes, it IS creepy!
It keeps morphing. Now it's going to get dimmer as it approaches the sun. If it survives after the 28th, what will it look like?
Are the Big Guys on it? Are they coming here to kick some ass? Will it turn red? Is it going to plasmarize us? And what about its mates - Lovejoy, Encke and Linear? Are we going to have the nastiest Christmas of all time?
So many questions!
Because we're in unfamiliar territory. Textbooks don't cover this. Hubble already baffled by 6-tailed asteroid, just conveniently renamed a comet... hey!
Maybe Ison will turn into an asteroid.

Well looking to the pic's on your source (and some of the last days) I will say that maybe the shape of tail (wings) was a transition of speed/acceleration ... Is gaining too much speed! just say'n

The silence of our resident experts is deafening.......and telling. If this is an authentic photo of ISON, I can see why they are silent. It is a poser that calls for thinkin' about and jawin' on. At the very LEAST it is one strange anomaly amongst comets.

Some have speculated that it is "silly" for an intelligent ET to approach Earth in this manner if they intend for contact to occur. I don't see it that way. Orbital mechanics are EXTREMELY complex and who knows what other issues are relevant in an interplanetary or interstellar journey. Perhaps the safest mode of travel is to either mimic cometary behavior, hitch a ride on one or .....who knows. If we knew, we would likely be travelling the stars ourselves.

Well, we may get answers before too much longer. Time will tell.

Fascinating.

I do find it odd that some of our esteemed members who roam these kind of threads are very silent.
