Ok now that is about as racist as it can get..

This was tweeted by home depot Thursday as a promo for college game day..

They took it down and apologized but I think the damage was done

The company scrambled to delete the tweet, which it called "dumb," and subsequently apologized.

"We have zero tolerance for anything so stupid and offensive," Home Depot tweeted. The company assured customers that both the marketing agency and the individual who posted the tweet have been terminated, though it didn't reveal the name of the agency.

Certainly from the outside it has that appearance. I doubt those that took part in it felt that way at the time. But that ones gonna leave a mark.

I dont see a clear implication being made from the picture coupled with the question.

The intent, supposedly racist, seems very ambiguous without more context.

My pet name for my wife is "monkey" it comes from her fondness of stuffed monkeys.

There was one time I was saying "Talk to you later monkey" On the phone in the back office, As a black coworker was ending his shift and walking by my office.

I almost got my ass handed to me over that one, Took some explaining and such.

And we were friends, I can only imagine what HD employees are feeling right now.

This is insensitivity on a monumental level, and they deserve what ever PR flack they get over this.

So I guess money trumps racism every time, it didn't look like these guys were all to upset this picture was taken. People need to lighten up, I'm sure if it was 2 mexican guys and a guy with a bean costume in the middle you'd all be laughing it up!

They show two black guys and a monkey and ask which one is different.

I think it's blatantly racist. Sounds like the punchline to a racist joke to me..

Ambiguous?!

Alright I will grant you the benefit of the doubt, by thinking you are a shiny example of "post Racial" america, where race simply is not even a thought in your daily life and or of non-american upbring to know our history.

But calling people of African decent Monkey, is a racial slur dating back to slave times in america, and suggesting that it would be difficult to pick what was different from the three is a tremendous racial slur.

Honestly, I think this is being blown way out of proportion.

I suppose we are a bit hyper-sensitive when it comes to racial stuff.

I have to agree with you. I also think our age is showing. Younger generations are separating less based on race and this type of terminology isn't being past down as it use to, thankfully.

I honestly hope that is the case, and if so, it is a great thing.

How bizarre! I worked for HD a few years ago at a distribution warehouse
while waiting to get back into my field of work. They were awesome & treated
me very well. I am a professional drummer (retired) & I had mentioned to a few
of the "Big Guys" that came to visit that I had just come from a Sheep Dog Trial
& people talked me into playing the "Bucket" & it so happened to be a HD bucket.
I didn't have sticks & played it like a conga or Djembe...had a blast!

I also took my Djembe 2 times to play with the cheer they do every morning before
the shift starts. I did NOT ever see or hear anything racist period & I am still thankful
to have worked there & for ALL the great people I met from many races. It was a
wonderful experience for me.

So what a shame for this to happen...

Cheers
Ektar

I don't see it. I mean I understand how people are construing this image to be overtly racist but I don't believe that was the intent of the marketing department.

If it was two white guys or one white guy, one black guy, and the monkey would it be racist? What if the monkey guy was wearing a pig or horse mask?

In summation, I understand (after it was pointed out) how this could be taken as a pot shot at black people, but at first glance I didn't see it that way. It's just two dudes and a dude in a costume.

I guess Im just not offended. Humans hate other humans based on superficial characteristics, and thats not going to change. I just consciously choose not be offended by it, despite societies insistence that I be. Setting aside that false passion and looking at things dispassionately, things that are programmed into others to immediately evoke some specific response upon seeing some trigger image or word or action, doesnt affect me "as it should".

If the people who did this weren’t intending to be racist then it isn’t racist. BUT
Ignorance is bliss to a point.

Those who know the issue should inform and correct the people who did this out of innocence, of course that is if they truly didn’t realize what they were doing.

The company did the right thing.

It wouldn't be so bad if they had a white guy on one side , but it is kind of funny.
