The steam box while a good idea on paper will not be able to compete with either consoles or PC's. In fact you may as well get a PC as it will
technically be a downgraded games only PC anyways, they are trying to do a cross between the two but it does not work like that. While powerhouses the
top of the line Gaming PC's technically blow consoles out of the water, yet there marketing and game development windows are small and its why you get
few games, generally withing the span of 2 or three years you got a game which would be able and use all that power but by then your old gaming PC
will become obsolete.
That and game makers and companies are finally getting smart. I mean why spend all the effort and $$ in creating a game which will have a small time
window and will only reach the market for a few core and hardcore fans that can run it. Which is why I can think of a bunch of good console games, yet
can only think of a few good PC games in the time life of a console which is about 6 to 9 years. And in that whole area of time you would have to
upgrade your PC a bunch of times just to play the games you want on it. And now a days its just smarter for them to make games cross platform and for
the wider audience were it will sell more.
Its simple really, in a constantly changing tech dynamic world PC just change to much sometimes in the course of months for developers to really get
something going or put that much resources behind it only to have it come down a year or so down the line, that not only is your tech and game engine
outdated but you will need to scrap it or start all over, and even then only a few will have the requirements to play your game, and even then PC are
running with little choices other then the massive power and graphics which it will be able to put out. In a ways its basically overkill as with a
little tweaking you can make most games run, and run well, on less powerful technical machines such as consoles. So while PC games will always be
king in the pure brute power side, the development side will have to always guess on the market, the time windows, and even if there game will sell to
more then to just a few people who can afford to buy all the latest graphics cards, and other requirements, which can lead up to more then twice as
much as a console would cost.
And the steam box, in my opinion there going to shoot themselfs in the foot, if they can get game developers behind it, maybe it will have a few
years, but beyond that it will be no point to it even if it can be upgraded because you can just get a PC that it will do all that and more. There
are a bunch of games which were supposed to come out for this current crop of of consoles which got scraped, most of them simply because there
development windows were taking to long some since when the PS3 came out, some have have been in and out of the development for 6 years, and are
just on the back burner.
I expect that most of those that got scraped or pushed back will be one day coming out on the PS4 or the X-box one, even on the PC. And though not
technically as powerful as PC's, with the current crop of consoles coming out, and the technical leveling out of the playing field which will make
developing games that much more faster and easier, as seeing they know what there working with, and there market, and the fact that they dont have to
worry about different system performances as they would on PC's. I expect that in the lifetime of the up and coming consoles you will see a lot of
games coming out.
And while PC will always have that one game which is so much more powerful, shiny, and graphicy, then anything on the consoles. Well frankly that is
its market, and even then you will only see those games coming out once every 3 to 4 years, and will likely just be eye candy, but in that time on
consoles game companies will be able to put out a whole bunch of games, which they would in now way be able to put out on PC's, and seeing as the
newer consoles are more user friendly in terms of development tech, and as the technology involved is pretty much the same across all platforms. I
suspect you will see a lot of cross platform games which will be on both consoles and PCs, and both have there edges, superiority, and flaws. And yes
PCs as gaming machines do have there flaws much more then I said above. Ultimately in a way things just balance themselfs out, and everybody has
there niche which they cater to.
