Could it be that the people of Japan realise that there is more to life than propagating a species. Perhaps they can see that the pattern of life - get born - go to school - enter the workforce - get married - have children - is just not what the Japanese people want anymore.

There is a theory about the three generations - first generation builds the base - second generation builds the success - third generation destroys/wastes the success and the cycle begins again. Maybe in Japan the three generation cycle is breaking down.

What with Fukishima and the generations of radiation related illnesses that are appearing and those yet to surface - the Japanese people will have to look after all those that are ill. Those that are ill may not want to contemplate marriage and children.

As for the blow up dolls and virtual beaus - perhaps it is because they offer less stress - less arguments about money and don't involve children. All in all a very interesting thread and certainly not just about Japanese people as I am sure there are many people on the planet who are alone by choice and who have not had children by choice.

Allow or turn a blind eye to sex selective abortion. It reduces the population faster by ten folds because of the societal preference for male children world wide.

Depopulation is a plan that is underway.

A good part of it is economics. Although Japan may be showing a relatively low unemployment rate, I'd be willing to bet a lot (if not the majority) of those jobs are service sector and don't pay too good. Factor that in with high housing costs, and you're going to be living with mama & papa-san into your 40s. That really puts a crimp on things.


Honestly, it's not fair to compare today's population to previous generations that had much more milage in terms of disposable income. (Sure they made much less back then, but that money was worth over 20X as much.)

It may look like a problem when it's a national trend, but eventually it'll start picking back up when the market starts favoring labor over employers again. When you get paid well, can afford your own house, transportation, utilities, etc. to the point of being comfortable then being able to have and support a family looks more sensible and less of a burden.

But like some people have said, finding a good match is really difficult. Everybody is picky these days. Using whatever money you have to satisfy your own wants is a lot easier, and there's much less stress involved. Why be stressed out all the time trying to pull loose ends together to keep a family going when you can manage the same amount of resources for yourself and be content. Some might think that's selfish, but in turn you're not putting anyone else through any unnecessary suffering either.

I can relate to both. No point in bothering to have kids until I can support my own weight (preferably without public aid), and although I'm currently employed I need a much better paying job to do that. (Some would say to get a second job, but I'm spent for the day after dealing with the one I've got. And I'd rather not burn out what little health I have by taking drugs or whatever would be needed to push through. If I do somehow manage any secondary income, it will be doing something I enjoy and on MY terms.)

And to be honest, I don't think anyone is down on love or sex. (I'm sure most people would be all for it if the situation is right.) It's just that once you get educated past a certain point you think things out in a practical sense and use reason no matter what your feelings may say. So don't worry too much about Japan (or other countries that may follow the trend), I'm sure modern civilization will eventually get its act together.

Remember something historically...Intelligent logical reasonable people of education and culture..can balance a budget...can they not???

You are such lost and confused souls, you are directly contributing to the problem. To an extent you are correct, but like most people, you take things too far. You shouldn't have children if you can't afford to shelter, clothe and feed them. Since that only requires a salary of about 20k/yr (depending on location) there aren't many couples that shouldn't be having children.

What needs to happen is a transformation from materialism and selfishness to love and selflessness. I would rather raise 10 kids in poverty, teaching them to love their family, friends, and neighbors, than to have 1 child that went to an ivy league college, but was selfish.

Things are just things, step away from the rat race, love your family. That's where true happiness is. True happiness is never found in having the smartest kid, or the most athletic kid. True happiness is found in having a good kid and a significant other to share in the successes and failures of life, regardless of financial success.

Quit viewing things in such a materialistic way.

I am not sure of your comparison to the wolf being all so big and bad on the food chain..or the apex so to speak. I say this because I know the the wolf can run faster than men, see better ..day and night, smell better etc etc etc. But I also know that men ..eskimo men..figured out that a certain seal or whalebone can be bent over and tied together with sinew. Then it is buried in a piece of animal meat or fat for the wolf to come along and eat. The sinew disolves in the wolf stomach and the bent over bone springs out and punches a hole in the wolf stomach and or intestines and he dies of peritonitis. That is how a smart eskimo..solved their wolf problem.
Properly applied this principle can be done with people as well.
Often just the thought or realization is enough to put people who try to behave as wildlife..in check.

False altruism..from to much of a movie and television education. History itself is often a system of trial and error. People can seldom learn outside trail and error. I'm a handsome man and for the last five years or so, I haven't even felt like having sex. I myself wonder why, but the best I've come up with is that I just don't want the hassle...its not even worth the effort imo.
I gotta go to a bar or some other social event, which inevitably costs time/money, just to find someone. If I do, I'll spend more money on drinks/dinner "getting to know eachother." All for the CHANCE I may get lucky.
Perhaps it'll take a few dates...of spending yet more of my time/money to get lucky. Sometimes it happens, sometimes not. The only thing I can count on with dating/sex is that my wallet will be lighter.

I've come to this conclusion about sex....it isn't worth the hassle...and here's why:

Why would I want to waste a hundred bucks on a date where I have a chance to get lucky when I can just call a better looking prostitute for the same amount who'll be whomever I want and its a sure thing?? Once you realize that you can get sex without the hassle of chick flicks, the daily drama, debt, and a 50% divorce rate in which "the love of your life" takes half your stuff, the world becomes a better place.

Just to say in the title of your article, Love and Sex are two separate things, people confuse Lust with Love, and there are different kinds of Love. Brotherly Love, to say you Love peanut Butter, or you Love your wife, etc. In the Greek Language is more precise and uses different words for different kinds of Love, English is very vague on the word.

I never stated that the "oldest profession" was new, however, the basis of women having a say in ANYTHING is in fact a very recent development. Women have had social freedoms in only the last hundred years.

Please explain what would happen in say 1000BC if a woman didn't do as the man said? Sharia Law explains exactly what would happen. So comparing prostitutes through the ages is definitely NOT an argument against.

Disregard the wolf thing. The man is to the wolf what the wolf is to the Chihuahua, in fact more so and light years ahead, a wolf and a Chihuahua are practically the same thing compared to a man and a wolf, there would be no contest in terms of evolutionary status on this planet. Well dysfunctional people buy more useless junk, which helps run our consumer society, and there generally are more easily corralled despite there better judgments.
