that thing looks like it would have the radar profile of a brick wall....

I thought the point of stealth technology was radar absorbing plus a small profile with angular shape to deflect what is not absorbed.

If you notice the angles on it, it will do the same as the F-117 used to do, and it will deflect the radar that hits it. Radar bounces back off of right angles, much more than it does off any other type of angle. The Arleigh Burke has the radar signature of a fishing boat, by using similar ideas. That's why the antenna on the top of them is angled back the way it is. If you look also at the railings, they're right angles, but they're turned "point" out, so the radar would split around it.

The upper structure is also composites, which tend to absorb radar much more than reflect it. That's one reason why the stealth aircraft are made up of mostly composites.

Thanks, I am actually reading up on it now. I also never knew about the re-entrant triangles. it is really interesting how it also traps radar.

It's a fascinating topic that can take a long time to read up on. The move and counter move when dealing with stealth is fascinating to study. Some of the ideas that they come up with are really bizzare, but surprisingly some work fairly well.

Old hat.

The Royal Navy have had stealth destroyers for years:-

So has the US. The Arleigh Burke has a radar signature much smaller than it should. I've even heard it reported that they've managed to sneak through a carrier group at night without anyone noticing them.

PlanetXisHERE
What a waste of money, money that could be put to much better use here or overseas.

PlanetXisHERE
I think to glorify/support such wastes of money is a crime against humanity, and I am frankly surprised certain members here would do so, for other members it is no surprise at all.

It appears PlanetXisHERE that those who CAN be assisted more financially like those poor children in the pic you provide can still be SUPPORTED w or w/out the development of these EA*RTH sea craft. Which can take one into a hole which appears to be rabbit but may be deeper in relation to global politics and so then the deeper one gets more WHY questions are asked.

Questions like why are there 3rd world poverty ridden areas of EA*RTH in the year 2013 as advanced as this species can be & is. And the answer is mismanagement of species priorities tied into potential non care of species for itself in some more poor areas. Along with non recognition that to not uplift these poorer 3rd world areas is or can cause destabilizing effects upon the species... As a whole.

There ARE ignorance's that unfortunately exist here on EA*RTH PlanetXisHERE, who don't care- who don't recognize who will spread ignorance agendas upon many as long as more $$$ is made. If allowed, and so Counter responses to these ignorance's is intelligence.

@ times the ANGELIC can APPEAR more grotesque then its counter, but its the appearance that must be acknowledged second after its deeds primarily...

And so the question:
Would more or less be better off w/o or w such intelligence counters on ignorance?
Would many be safer on EA*RTH or less safe? with hands and feet in the seas and EYES in the SKY considering Cosmic naval practices & interest that many may not be aware of not saying 1 is but just saying...
If the Ignorance has claws should the intelligent not as well?

Again PlanetXisHERE, 1 agrees with you there are areas of EA*RTH where the population NEEDS more compassionately & financially supported.
It has to also be acknowledged that until ALL mature as a species the unbalances of ignorance vs intelligence will continue.

The seas...
@ times it seems that certain accomplishments of man may cause interest upon man from areas many may not considered to even exist.
In the far past the first to become the Sea crossers 1 can imagine what they SEEn and recorded why being the first to cross the large water borders to other lands. This is a strong species accomplishment when compassion is involved as it begins the movements of genetics globally. Compassion for if not then wars and thieving activities can occur upon the encountered... But if compassion felt demonstrated peace is shared and species genetics advances evolves.

Just as man gets further into space activities same rules and concept may apply as cosmic advancement is Observed & Protected... So to see the craft of sea and space developed as of now by man to 1 is showing how far the Taught have came technologically.
How well good conduct is associated with such technological advancements shows signs of species maturity or not. As said only time will tell PlanetXisHERE.

I am very proud to say my husband is walking and working on that ship as I type this...LOL...it is kind of nice to see our little old town of Bath on ATS!!! My husband has been at BIW for 31 years and this will be the first ship he has been asked to go on sea trials on (Next Fall)...the employees are chosen by seniority and it has taken him this long to move up to be asked...they only take a few from each dept. at the yard, and understandably so, the seniority is needed when or if things go wrong during trials....We joke about the fact that it is an all enclosed hull as it is a joke around the yard that sea trials can make or break you....a lot of them get ill...LOL...not going to the rails is going to be difficult....The control room looks like something from the original "bridge" in Star Trek or like NASA's control room...all teched out with no where to go....hahaha-sorry, couldn't help my sense of humor there-LOL

They will be even more shocking when the upgrade her to the new rail gun system in development.

That was one of the reasons they chose the tumblehome style hull. It is supposed to be more stable in rough seas and allow for a more stable platform for her weapon systems.

I don't much care for the look of the design but i bet the capabilities
are shocking. I miss the old battleship designs, while not great for
what we look for in a modern warship they sure were pretty.

If you like 'pretty' take a look at the German battle cruiser Bismark, even Churchill said it was the best looking ship he'd ever seen.
Read how many British ships battered it to death, and how long it took.

Is that something like this? Looks wicked.

Yes, that is what they envision on future warships. The current gun system is kind of a stop gap measure till these are ready to be fielded. The electrical generation systems on the Zumwalt were engineered to power rail guns and other directed energy weapons that require a lot of juice.

Looks like a lot of it is below water line in first pic. 600+ feet long.

Just did the calculation on the video Range of the gun will be 110 Nautical Miles which is the equivalent of 126 Miles. They want to eventually push the range out to 200 NM. It can shoot and reach the horizon in 7 seconds. Insane. To put into perspective, a WWII Battleship's 16 inch guns would take 1 1/2 minutes to reach it Maximum range of 24 Miles. Wow.

The rounds are travelling at hypersonic speed (Mach 7ish). That is why the rounds no longer need explosives in them, they do their damage by kinetic energy alone.
USS Missouri main 16" battery had a muzzle velocity of 1834 mph. The Navy tested a rail gun in development to 5400 mph. Definitely not your grandfathers main battery.
I'm not sure what the delivered energy is between the two. The Missouri can fire shells weighing in excess of 1 ton, the rail gun fire shells around 10 lbs. I'll let the physics gurus here figure that one out.
The Navy likes this new tech for the missile like ranges it is going to eventually get, faster than any known missile, is nearly unstoppable after it leaves the muzzle and is a fraction of the cost per shot when compared to other types of projectiles and guided missiles.

It doesn't look very seaworthy. Looks like a a car carrier which are known to capsize. And made from composites? Good grief! What are they thinking? I prefer the good old days, when warships were made from armored steel.

Now that's a real battleship!

Composites are as strong, or stronger than steel, for less weight. The hull shape has been tested and shown to be able to withstand a hurricane, quite nicely.

And that's also a dinosaur.

Yeah sadly they are, but imagine how much loadout with rail guns, ect you could put on an Iowa Class BB. Course you would need big reactors to power all of it. It would be Like the SDF-1 in the Macross Saga
