Agree with this. What is being communicated when you do this with the flag is: "please come into my home and save me from my immediate distress." Does the OP really want a bunch of people or law enforcement officers breaking down her door, to rescue her from her immediate distress? If no, then the flag should not be hung this way. It's like calling 911 to complain that gas is too expensive.

Do you have an issue with our government disrespecting this country to the level it has? How about disrespecting our citizens? Our veterans? Our elderly? Our children and their intellectual development? Our land and our resources?

The flag is just a piece of cloth. It is the symbolism imbued in it that makes it worth something. It stands for something. It used to stand for something great, a symbol of freedom, personal liberty, and the ability to live well, express yourself freely, and enjoy all the rights that were created back in 1787 with the first ten amendments to the Constitution.

That is no longer the case. I feel it is not only proper, but VITAL that we show how upside down things have become. What better way than by flying the flag upside down? To me, it is the ultimate show of respect for what this country once stood for, and makes a statement better than any wordy sign ever could.

So I guess that if the car dealer refused business to some one because of their race, you would be OK with it? After all, it could be that his opinion is that everyone not of his race is inferior.

The car dealer should be sued for discrimination. If people feel that the nation is in distress, than they are legally within the law to fly the flag upside down.

Bingo! I purposely left discrimination out of the OP to see if anyone would bring it up.

If we had been turned away for any other reason, this would be quite a different thread now, wouldn't it?

I DO feel as if his decision (even if he is within his right to refuse service to anyone) was discriminatory and based on his assumption about our political stance.

We are so divided, and so busy fighting with each other over opposing political ideologies, that the big picture has been obscured to most.

You have to understand what the flag means to most of us. Especially most of the veterans, especially older ones. The flag represents us the people not the government. The government is screwed up not us. It represents all the blood, sweat, and tears she'd building this country.

I have no problem with you protesting the government but I do have a problem with disrespecting, and misrepresentation of the flag. What your doing was meant for wartime to easily display when an area or town for example that is under attack or under threat of life, such as a flood etc.

This is what we have problem with this misuse of our flag. If law enforcement descended on your home thinking you were under threat of life you could be held legally accountable.

This is serious for most of us, we are the flag and we are fine and resent the misuse of our symbol. Put up all the antigoverment stuff you want but turn that flag back upright.

Do you keep it flying at night, in the rain? How far is it off the ground? Hmmmm as I suspected, you don't respect it in the first place.

If the flag doesn't represent the government of the United States, then they should stop flying it at all government installations. Besides, how do you know they're not in actual distress? Have you looked at the economy lately?

Were they fought for the protection of the American people, which the flag supposedly represents? My point is, the flag has been prostituted and misused since the 1950s. Turning it upside down is probably the most authentic use of this symbol in many decades.

A large part of the citizenship is brainwashed. The government and Congress can wave the flag or speak of the communist or Taliban threat and those people in the name of being saved would follow it into hell. That seems to be exactly what is happening now.

Speaking for myself as a retired Vet, I am fully supportive of Dar's husbands action. It is appropriate as I see this country as being under attack...from within.

I'm sorry, but an upside down flag, an impeach Obama sign, and a Gadsen flag...that is like the holy trinity of "Look at me, I'm effing crazy" when done out in the real world. Sure, do it here on ATS or the internet and it is "normal"...but ATS isn't exactly a "normal" place.

I read Homer's thread the day it was posted and told my other half about it, and within about 15 minutes we, too, had our distress flag flying. In addition to the flag, there would also later be a sign at the front of the property saying 'Impeach Obama!' in the first line, followed by 'Gov't, get to work!' in the second. Perched atop the sign you would see a small Gadsden flag (don't tread on me, for the unfamiliar).

I don't really care about your symbolism with upside down flag... it can be interpreted in many ways, almost like Bible verses, but what really got my attention is this line here.

Can you please explain why Obama should be impeached?

Is it because you think drone attacks are like war crimes? Or is it because he did not push republicans harder to avoid government shut down?

Yes, ask that to the frog stuck in a pot of boiling water. At what point is he in distress? Was it when the water was tepid and he did not see the danger of the fire under it? Was it when he started to sweat? Or was it when he was helpless to get out?

I say, we see the signs, we know history and this will not end will unless we stop it, and therefore it's time to put up the distress signals now more than ever!
