A U.S. Senate probe on the United Nations (U.N.) oil for food program has come to the conclusion that Saddam Hussein and his cronies reaped over 21 billion dollars in kickbacks and smuggling. The money was gained from 1991 to 2003 through the program administered by the U.N. The smuggling of oil was worth over 9.7 billion alone. Senator Norm Coleman stated "How was the world so blind to this massive amount of influence-peddling?"

news.yahoo.com
WASHINGTON - Over more than a decade, Saddam Hussein (news - web sites)'s government raised more than $21.3 billion in illegal revenue by subverting U.N. sanctions against Iraq including the humanitarian oil-for-food program, congressional investigators estimated Monday.

That's double the $10 billion the Iraqi president previously was alleged to have siphoned off. The earlier estimate included only the oil-for-food program. The new, higher number includes illicit profits from efforts like the illegal smuggling of oil in the years of sanctions that preceded the humanitarian program that began in 1996.

"The magnitude of fraud perpetrated by Saddam Hussein in contravention of U.N. sanctions and the oil-for-food program is staggering," Sen. Norm Coleman, R-Minn., said Monday as his Senate Government Affairs permanent subcommittee on investigations began a hearing on the subject.

"This is like an onion we just keep uncovering more layers and more layers," he said.

Its pretty clear that the U.N. needs to undergo some changes. The fact that several of the countries that appear to have directly circumvented the program or turned a blind eye to the corruption is repugnant given their vocal opposition to the war in Iraq. Not that the U.S. is untainted either. Many American companies appeared on the list as well. They should be penalized for their actions.

Saddam is a monster.

This doesnt justify this criminal war, nor does it justify our killing hundred of thousands of innocents in Iraq.

The point?

Is this a link so we can justify this war? Wont work

Wow the Iraqi leader making money off of Iraqi Oil, how demonic.

The oil for food program was an underhanded way of bypassing sanctions to the enrichment of many nations and corporations involved. I'm not defending or sanctifying Saddam, but the bottom line is it was their oil to make money off of, and we gave them this loophole to get in on the money. The irai people couldn't even import alot of medical equipment, but they sure could sell us their oil. If we are going to demonize Saddam for this, let's remember who made the man in the first place.

The UN created the Oil forFood program not the Oil for Saddam's retirement fund program. The UN created a program to feed people and turned it into a joke and scandal.

We all know that he was misusing the money and we all know that he was a "bad man"

But all these news has been brough out to take the people's in US mind from the crisis in fallujah.

The liberation of fallujah is now a humanitarian crisis.

So you support the UN when its in America's best interest but when the UN was cool to the idea of removing Saddam once a for all, you yanks call the UN irrelivant, and go off and start this Blood for Oil program. BTW no one has answered my question, just how much money has Bush, Cheney and Haliburtan made of this bloody conquest.

I dont support the UN in any way shape or form if they are in the best interest of the US or not.

The UN is a joke and a waste, It should be torn down and replaced with something that more fits the orignal idea the UN was formed on.

This is ridiculous. This thread will turn into a bloodbath itself.

Let us take our minds off the murder of innocents in Iraq, and talk about what an evil man Saddam was .

yep. tell me another one.

What a joke

Ok.....what hundred of thousands of Iraqi civilians have we killed in this war??......

Don't you get tired of giving these numbers that you can't corroborate?....i know I am....

BTW....you keep forgeting that in the "innocent Fallujah" we have found the dismembered body of a caucasian woman...iraqi soldiers found what they named "slaughterhouses" were some hostages were kept and probably some were killed...U.S. Marines just found two hostages alive which the insurgents left behind...one of them a Syrian, the other "an Iraqi.....

Insurgents attacks have claimed more Iraqi lives than lives from soldiers/sailors from the coalition...

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Insurgent bombs, rockets and mortars killed eight people Thursday in Iraq and damaged a power plant that supplies electricity to Baghdad.

SAMARRA, Iraq - Insurgents set off at least two car bombs and attacked a police station Saturday in the central Iraqi town of Samarra, killing at least 20 people and injuring 23 people, according to police and health officials.

Insurgents stepped up their attacks in the restive Iraqi city of Samarra on Saturday as U.S. Marines prepared for an all-out assault on the rebel stronghold of Falluja.

A health official in Tikrit said at least 34 people were killed and dozens were wounded in the violence in Samarra, a Sunni city that had been a center of support for Saddam Hussein. Tikrit is the capital of Salah ad Din province, where Samarra is located.

Insurgents have launched fierce attacks that killed about 100 people in five Iraqi cities, wreaking havoc just days from the handover of power.

Insurgents detonated four car bombs and attacked police stations in the Iraqi city of Samarra on Saturday, killing at least 37 people and wounding 62, police and health officials said.

A bomb-laden car plowed through a razor wire fence and exploded outside a police station in the north of the country Saturday, killing nine Iraqis and injuring 45, including policemen there to pick up their pay.

Hours later, a mortar attack hit a Baghdad neighborhood, killing five people and wounding four.

I would not say its a joke.....yet but it is wastfull just like any beurocratic orginisation is. Replacing it with another UN that is based on the original UN ideal(whatever they are my opinion on the matter is that the UN is here to ensure peace between major powers not police so-called "rogue states" that pose no real threat to global peace) would just replace an inefficient beurocratic entity with another(unless of course the US has complete control then the point is moot because then it would not be the UN it will be the USUN remember that spoof on the onion?
)

My propaganda?.....pleaase....

Oh do you mean that 100,000 iraqis that died, including natural deaths, deaths by accidents, etc etc...then perhaps we should add to the number of Americans that died in 9/11 the deaths of "every person who died in the US that year from natural causes, from accidents etc etc"....that would surely raise the numbers of dead of 9/11 to the hundred of thousands also...

BTW.....who is bringing forth a propaganda, claiming insurgents are innocent?...

Surely not me....

Perhaps the next time you see an insurgent attack on the news, you should read how many Iraqis are killed again...and realize that insurgents are killing Iraqis, not only coalition soldiers...

Newsflash---- America and the UN thought Saddam was so evil to his people they refused to trade with him to enforce a step down.He heldfast. They needed his oil. He sold it to them, in exchange for food for the poor people of Iraq. How suprising, he never used this money to supply food to his people, but pocketed it for himself and his cohorts.
So Saddam is so vile we will not trade with him. But we will trade with him and trust him to use the money to provide food and healthcare for the people we think he is being evil against.

End of newsflash.

I find funny that US will not keep tags on the death of Iraqi people I wonder why.

Perhaps is for people like some in these boards, to help them in their proganda of making this war justify

I guess any Iraqi death be children or women are "insurgents" after all, its easier to keep it that way not tags not body count.
